Haven't read all of the other comments so not sure if anyone said it already. Here in Europe the standard paper size is A4. Its taller than the American paper. When folded in half you get the A5 and half of that is A6.
Tiffany Hooks which makes sense but the USA is really hanging on to the old imperial sizing when you measure paper size in mm it's quite easy to do with a ruler.
This was extremely helpful for me in figuring out what measurements to consider when making my own travel journal and figuring out what works best for my needs. I recently had to learn how to use the metric system for a job I had so thankfully I understand both styles now but having this conversion helps greatly in translating for inserts, which I seem to struggle with still. Well made video!!!
Really good to see all of the standard sizes including the metric measurements for the travelers notebooks. I think most find the size they like and just use that one. This year I’m looking for the size that’s perfect for me.
I just ordered my first TN last week (it should be coming today). This video is right on time! Thanks for taking the time to map everything out for us newbies!
Just came across your channel and subscribed. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us these comparisons. Your video was informative and easy to follow. You were gracious in your response to some of your critics. Great job overall and please keep these videos coming!
Thank you for all the explanation. I have watched this video 3 times & it makes more sense to me now. I’m going to make me the templates for the Imperial (the one we use here in the u.s.) just like you have shown us. Again, thank you for all the research you have done to bring us all this information.
THANK YOU so much for taking the time to explain the sizes to us newbies!!! This is going straight to a playlist so I don't forget!!! In fact, I'm LOVING your vids and creativity! So thanks again. And you have a new sub!! ;)
greatly helpful video. the size difference in metric happens becuase A4 (letter size equivalent) actually comes to 8.27 x 11.69 inches when converted. so to make cutting more efficient the sizes differ
Great videos Thank you so much for all this good info. You saved me a headache 😉 I’m a newbie. Love 💗 your channel! Working on making my 1st TN. How do you figure what size to score spine if TN’s are different sizes? Thank you in advance 😊
In Europe and every other place where we use the metric system and the standard of paper sizes it is very easy to make an A5 and an A6. The standard paper size here is an A4. The A5 is exactly half an A4, so we just fold the paper in half to get an A5. Also an A6 is exactly the half of an A5, so if we fold an A4 paper twice we get an A6 (meaning, you fold an A5 in half, and we get the A6). And so on: an A7 is exactly the half of an A6. Also the other way: an A3 paper is exactly twice the size of an A4. So, actually the standard paper sizes we use over here are very easy to measure. And the metric system is actually way more logical than the american measuring system. You just have to know it and when you do it is a much easier system to use than the Imperial system :)
I understand. I am in the U.S. so I am working within the system we use, and I was just trying to help others like me understand the size differences. Thank you for watching!
Yes! thank you so much for this video and breaking it down. Okay so here's my question, how do I measure the leather itself to fit the notebook? i just don't want to waste material.
There are too many brands and they all make their covers different. It also depends on the width of the spine. As a general rule you would double the width of the folded insert, and add inch plus whatever width you want for the spine to calculate cover width. To calculate height use the height of the insert plus one half inch. You could add slightly more to the height depending on how you want it to look. I suggest experimenting with some cardstock. Thank you for watching!
While I would prefer if everything were in the metric system, I live in the U.S. and would rather not deal with wonky measurements, so I usually "imperialize" my measurements, too. I do trim the .25 inches of the letter sheets for my Cahier sized notebooks. (I too have a Webster's Pages travelers notebook.)
Just so you know Cahier is a french word (means notebook) and the correct pronunciation is ka-ie as in Kanye west for exemple (without the n obviously) By the way nice video :)
Hi...i want to make a 5x7. B6 travelers notebook for a swap..can you please give me the measurements for the paper I am to cut and score lines for the holes using standard U.S. measurements..TFS
Do you mean for the cover? If so that would depend on how wide you want your spine. I say add 1/2 inch to the height so it would be 7.5 inches. Then if the spine is 1 inch add 1/4 inch to each side so it should be 11.5 inches wide. You might want more room for the width. These are just suggestions. Test it out with scrap paper first! Thank you for watching!
+Y*G*F THE LOUD AND PROUD A6 uses inserts 4x6 so paper would be cut at 8x6 and folded in half. B7 uses inserts 5x7 so paper would be cut at 10x7 and folded in half. The are American-ized sizes. If you want to be accurate then you would use the sizes shown on the black examples in the video.
Interesting that all these shows show something that is already known. Every company that sells TN inserts mentions their size. What is the difficult thing to find which would be a very important knowledge bit is the size of the actual cover! No one has mention this. So the title of these are actual, no offense intended, is misleading. You should mention that covers size. That would be appreciative. Otherwise your video is pretty good.
I guess its all in the perception. The problem with giving cover sizes is not all covers are the same size for the insert size they accommodate. Thank you for watching.
I know this is older but THIS IS SO BRILLIANT! :) Just saw it today
😊 Thank you!
THIS.IS.SO.HELPFUL. I am a planner lover and have NEVER KNOWN the TRUE sizes!!!!
This makes sense as to why when we purchase things from overseas they don't always fit exactly
Thank you!

I break it down in the description under the video. Maybe test it with a piece of paper before you cut your actual cover. Thank you for watching!

what is the size paper that goes in the b6 and a5
