Ravi sounds much more like Joe Henderson in this recording than either Michael Brecker or John Coltrane, but he absolutely sounds more like himself than any of them. This track is phenomenal. I'm definitely transcribing both solos at some point.
This is amazing stuff. Who cares who sounds like whom? It's jazz, it's saxophone: naturally there are going to be some similarities from one player to another. That means nothing compared to the sweet sounds they BOTH are capable of, Coltrane and Brecker. It's not a battle of the bands...why not just sit back and enjoy the GREATNESS. :-)
Hey you're damn right. Tain is my favorite drummer in whole world. But Tyshawn Sorey is a young genius, literally, working on a music Ph.d. but playing with Fieldwork, Steve Lehman (Travail, Transformation and Flow is awesome) and Steve Coleman. Tyshawn is so creative, but he can swing, funk, slam, make ambient drum music. What a talent.
@kaseyWtrumpet I've heard Ravi a couple of times at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA.. and yeah, you're right, there's a little bit of brecker in there. it's such a damn trip seeing Ravi live... it's the closest I'll ever come to seeing John Coltrane in person. I mean, he just looks like his dad. TRIP!
Steve coleman kills standards, whenever he plays standards you want to hear it, Now he is mathematically, I listen to the m base collective, he is the one who explains it the best. He is not recognised for his talents, heis too artistic for jazz today. If he was a unionist, the jazz press would like him. I going to have him playing salt peanuts , round midnight.

Ravi lives in no man's shadow. A brilliant musician

steve's playing from around 1.45 to 2.00... (and in general) absolutely ridiculous! feels amazing. great recording!
Ravi sounds like Ravi.
Ravi Coltrane performs a tenor solo just like Steve Coleman's alto solo!!!!
Absolutely far out version of inner urge. compelling listening. thanks jazz giants!
Amazing. Thanks for the upload!
Thank you, Jidaiheisoku. I heard "Giant Steps," throughout, the version.
Buenísima versión!!
Come see Ravi Coltrane at the Angele City Jazz Festival at the Ford Amphitheater in LA on 10/3.
COOL, freaking awesome
sweet
You need to include the incomparable Tyshawn Sorey to your list of M-Base collective people!
At that time, the roster of M-BASE was what 三木俊孝mentioned above. Probably, he referred to M-BASE web-site.
Inner Urge in 7/4 time
Thinks that's something? Listen to Lonnie Plaxico, Gary Thomas (jazz tenor sax) and any musician of the M-BASE collective. You can't miss!

@kaseyWtrumpet lol definitely, i was thinking the same
@kaseyWtrumpet Ravi doesn't sound like Brecker at all here. However, he sounds like Ravi Coltrane!
Sorry, maybe this is mentioned in the info above, but what album is this from?? It's some seriously good music, I might buy it myself...
Is it me,or does Michael Brecker sound a lot like Ravi's dad?

He must know he's not playing the changes.
Good but not inspiring l like Henderson's original.
way too fast...little feel..too cold and clinical..they ruin the ambience and surrealistic feel of this great tune..shame on them
