Railways really divide cities like Bamberg in half. Given the broad rail corridor, it would be easy to drop the railway into a 6 km long trench as it passes through the city. A part from reconnecting the city, it would make a lot of land not far from the city centre available to redevelopment. Rail industry, excluding stations should be moved to city fringe.
Divding cities? Railways formed cities! Without the railway a lot of cities wouldn't be as big as they are now... there were plans in Bamberg to build the additional tracks next to the city, but it was declined because it destroys too much of the land around it!
@@matzk0840 yes, rail assisted to grow. The old city is on one side of the station, but the city today is on both sides and divided by the railway. 6 km of rail trench with lid may cost USD 600 million, but it would be worth the opportunities operated.
Actually less than a river would. There are quite some ways to cross it. For this project multiple variants been looked at, with three main versions. The one choosen, having the two new track run in tunnels, or have the new tracks outside of the town. Running around the town is pretty bad since you want some of the ICEs stop in the town and some just run through, also you want to bundle cargo and local passenger trains. The tunnel version probably is very expansive and the noise is still there from the two existing tracks. When it comes to the actual implentation, for most sections not much additional land is needed. Only in the southern section, where a new station is added. And in the north, were a level free crossing is added (some allotment garden area is lost). But you should also see the positive sides. A new train stop is added, all crossings are rebuild (often with additional bike lanes), and noise protection is added everywhere. And of cause if you just travel trough with ICE, that will become faster.
Atomstrom (nein, danke), windstrom (nein, danke), Stromtrassen (nein, danke), auto (nein, danke), gleisausbau (nein, danke) …

@@peteregan3862 600 Million for this tiny stretch is just nonsense, waaay to expensive for the little benefits

For increasing travel speed, capacity (passenger and cargo), as well as improving noise protection ... that is really cheap.
