  • The relationship between the U.S. and China has always been characterized by mistrust. The world's two largest economies view each other as rivals, and their latest dispute was ignited by a white balloon that China flew over U.S. territory. The US government says that its Air Force shot down a spy balloon that American media describes as part of a global Chinese surveillance system. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken postponed his trip to China. What's at stake for Washington and Beijing? And why? On To the Point we ask: US-China rivalry: What`s behind the growing tensions?

    The very first thing to mention should be that it is the US airspace to which the Chinese balloon entered. And the US has every right to protect its own airspace. So it wasn’t the US who started all this fuss. Every country can shoot tat anything they want in their own airspace and nobody can be blame for this except the intruder.

    • @civicblade1

      This type of round table discussion between people with different opinions are happening countless times every day in China.
      CGTN (the Chinese state broadcaster) hosts round tables similar to this and very often has more participants from more diverse backgrounds holding views and opinions with a far wider spectrum than the guests that appear on DW's shows.
      This clearly shows that you either haven't been to China or haven't lived in China and is just spreading and regurgitating misinformation that you have seen on western mainstream media.
      In some ways there are more freedom of expression in China as long as you keep away from these openly known red lines: 1) Do not advocate in the public for the independence of any province that China consider its own, 2) Do not advocate in public for the overthrow of the Communist Party of China, 3) Do not abuse or conduct personal attack on China's political leaders in public.
      Redline no.3 may sound unreasonable but this is exactly what got the USA to the current state of extreme society fracture along political lines. Culturally, the Chinese place a lot of value (even putting their lives at stake) in face saving.

    Unless China acts soon to sieze Taiwan, sooner than what makes any kind of sense militarily, it is likely that their nation will be straining under the economic drag created by their rapidly-aging society far too much to benefit from a costly war. The near future, just 6-8 years out, is projected to be well into the inevitable demographic collapse of China as the number of elders far exceeds youngsters working to support them. China would do well to simply settle down, focus on trade and stop making all their neighbors hate them so much. In a few short years they will be needing kindness and international support. That will be very difficult if they follow Russia's example and choose infamy.

The US will have to wait unti at least 2025 for the new TSMC/Intel/Samsung chip fabs to be finished before provoking a war that will result in an embargo of chip exports from Taiwan to the rest of the world.

      What a half-baked statement. What cancels out an aging population? Education and automation...maybe you should look into how that is working out in China. Almost universally, the young adults in China have post-secondary education, and automation is occurring in China more rapidly than anywhere else on Earth. As to all their neighbors "hate them so much", that is complete nonsense. You need to understand that most of China's neighbors are not U.S. allies, and it is only U.S. allies which are giving China trouble.

    • @aclearlight
      @aclearlight Год назад +3

      @@jasonjean2901 Available statistics would put your "virtually all" right at 36%, so a tad shy of being half-baked. I honestly hope you're right about the automation and productivity gains, but it'll be a heck of a race, and it will be very hard for small-plot farmers, which is most of them. Study the demographic projections (only just now being corrected for the last census' overcount of ~100million) and ask yourself just how certain one can be. For example, Mexican labor is already significantly cheaper than Chinese labor and the trend is accelerating. Same for India. Will robo tech zoom up in time to keep multinational corporations addicted to the Chinese labor market for manufacturing? Apple is planning to leave. The place is becoming unstable and they rely on imports for most of their energy and for a significant fraction of food; fragile situation. As for attitudes in the area towards the CCP, I have to ask if you've travelled there (and abouts) very much. Ever gotten the actual vibe from Vietnamese, Indonesians, Malaysians, Koreans, the now-servile Hong Kongese, or Singaporeans, Taiwanese, Indians or Philippinos? I have. I can only speculate about others like Tibetans, Nepalese, Mongols or Uyghurs, but I think I can guess. Unfortunately, what should be placed on Xi and the CCP gets extrapolated onto the people as a group. Regional fear is not the same as respect. Willingness to trade with is not the same as trust. Sadly, people in the region are not favorably disposed, and increasing war talk isn't helping. Perhaps none of this will matter if all goes well for China, but that's a big if. I don't say any of this out of ethnic malice. I have had scores of Chinese grad students go thru my lab and absolutely loved nearly all of them (and I enjoyed my multiple trips there). My students and the ppl I met in China mostly try to hide how much they hate their own government. For some it's a deep and easy habit to just repress it, for others it's a strain and they tear up with pain and frustration if they talk about it. If the CCP decides to grab Taiwan, the exodus of western capital and accompanying global boycott will terminate an already-struggling system, and the people there will have only Russia and NK to turn to for aid. Lastly, I would offer that despite the joys of anonymity and easy putdowns, it is possible to put ideas out there without waxing total D-head about it.

    Taiwan is a big issue with China. But I think people forget that Taiwan legally belongs to China. In 1895 China lost a war with Japan and Taiwan was ceded to Japan by China in a Treaty. After World War II. Japan lost and Taiwan was return to China in another treaty, The Sino-Japanese Peace Treaty. (The Treaty can be found @ United Nations Treaty Series 1952 (reg. no. 1858), pp. 38-44. And then there is of course the 1943 Cairo Decoration, Potsdam Decoration, Japan instrument of Surrender. Chiang kai shek's ROC government who was consider to be the legal government of China at the time represented China in accepting Taiwan back for China. It is one of the best legal claim a country have over a territory in world history. And currently the legal government and representative of China is the PRC. So I think people should keep this in mind when dealing with China.

As for where this is leading the human race; the expression 'follow the money' is still relevant advice. The global economic centre of gravity is migrating from its Anglo/American/EU centres toward eventually settling within Eurasia, where it will be kept economically viable and secure by a core China/Russia strategic trading and military alliance.The US dollar as global reserve currency will be replaced by a multiple of gold backed currencies, enabling more economic security and trading flexibility between sovereign states and thereby eliminating the economic domination of a single nation state.

Yet today insists that any part of of the world that was ever part of Imperial China, during any dynasty no less, is now part of Communist China. Whether the people in those territories want to be part of China or not. Like Tibet, Hong Kong and yes Taiwan. The South China Sea due to the name alone and a very old map. Not even a Chinese map. @@joekerr9036 Well they hardly invented colonialism and imperial expansion. That was the entire history of the world. But now... WW2 happened. During which the US and other allied forces of the West even helped China btw. The UN happened. Which is not just a Western thing. It serves all sovereign nations.
