Try a rubber band or a plastic made ring instead

should the airflow regulator not be drawing water in and not just producing air? is that not how a filter works?other wise you could just add a tube with a sponge on the end to create more co2 and regulate it with a tiny mount the same way you did?

The air flowing through the hole in the sponge will draw water in through the sides of the sponge. If water were to enter through the regulator and up out the hole, then it wouldn't be getting filtered by being pulled through the sponge.
