Amusement Today magazine retired the carousel category in their Golden Ticket Awards ceremony in 2019, because the Grand Carousel was undefeated in 14 years of competition.
It's always funny to see everyone hurrying over to one of the end horses so they can catch the rings. We're all guilty of it at some point! Knoebels is the park I grew up going to, living only 1 hour and 20 minutes away. I still prefer to go there over many large parks because they really treat you well and they have some of the most unique, thrilling, and well maintained rides you'll find at any amusement park. Their wooden roller coasters are among the best out there and Impulse was a great addition for 2015. The Grand Carousel is a must ride and those old band organs just add so much to it. You can't beat the food or prices either!!
Charles Carmel once worked with one of the greatest carousel carvers of all time Charles I. D. Looff. I grew up riding a Looff Carousel at Playland at the Beach in San Francisco. That carousel was built in 1905. It had 68 animals and 2 chariots and 4 working band organs on it. I’ve always loved Looff and Charles Carmel carousels!!!!!!!!!!
It’s rare to see and ride a carousel that has a working ring machine. The insurance costs are higher for these. The Glenn Echo carousel in Wash Dc has a ring machine they use on occasion. Love riding it and listening to the Wurlitzer 165 organ music .
Yeah sure, it may be the biggest carousel in the nation, but it isn’t the OLDEST carousel in the nation. I’m just pointing that out if you think the year 1913 is old for a carousel, you won’t believe 1876 is the year for the oldest carousel in America (Flying horses, Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard)
It’s not even the BIGGEST. The Charles I. D. Looff Carousel in East Province Rhode Island is bigger, so is the Looff Carousel in Spokane WA. And the original Charles I. D. Looff Carousel that operated at Whitney’s Playland at the Beach in San Francisco was built in 1905. It had 68 animals & 2 chariots with 4 working band organs on it. A Wurlitzer 165, (2) Wurlitzer 153’s and a Artizian Style D band organ. So it was still bigger and older than this Charles Carmel Carousel
Songs from the 1888 frati organ
“Convention city march”… 00:12
“Vanguard march”… 01:03
“Should I?”…1:57
“Under the sweetheart tree”…2:58

Over 70 years old and hand carved ? A true work of art that lives up to its name. (The video is beautifully done ).
Actually it's over 100 years old.

Couldn't agree more

I really like this music
The frati is a beast
Now do the other carousel.
I love this music

I think the frati organ may be one of the largest and oldest
I'm going to Knowles next week
This is my dream
I rode it yesterday 😊
did you catch any rings?
I have taken that ride so many times. Boy it is fun yet kinda scary
Think there are maybe two like this. People need to know the old saying...."The Brass Ring only comes around once..."
lol i went last Saturday it was fun
All those kids reaching for rings and not holding on, seems like an accident waiting to happen. But beautiful all the same
There's never any reported accidents on the carousel so i guess people know their limits.
Actually it's over 100 years old.
oops, you're right..... Thanks
I'd gone on this 3 times last year and missed each time trying to get the ring into the lion. Got a ring nearly each time I went around.
The person that carved this carousel 111 years ago would be so shocked that it is still being used in the futuristic 2024
Funny to see adults running to get the horse they want. 🎠
Im guilty of it
