Watching Mkleo vs Gluto in todays time is honestly just sad. The games are almost always close but Leo can never clutch it out, which is crazy to say because Leo’s clutch factor is one of the main things he was and still is known for, wild. Anyways amazing stuff to Gluto, it’s pretty impressive when you can become a roadblock for a player like Leo. That’s something I can only really say about 3 people besides Gluto being Tweek, Shuton and Proto have also been able to do. Leo is still one of the best in the world but he’s clearly not a contender for the best anymore and still seems to not know exactly what to do with the lineup. Leo let Gluto into his home for 2 weeks to train him and since then Gluto has had Leo's number. also why he doesn't try out Corrin again makes no sense since he did so well with her and didn't even finish fully developing them
Mkleo keeps proving he doesnt got that dog in him anymore. Gluto has stuck with wario and hasnt ever changed that and it has payed off for him majorly.
Maybe going Joker allows his opponents to more easily steal sets from him because his character can’t kill them unless he somehow gimps their overtuned recoveries, gets Arsene on the right times, and hits them at the right spot on 180%. Corrin and Byleth never had these issues and that’s why they caused him to win so easily in 2022.
What I really think is happening is a combination of competition straight up getting better at fighting Leo and his match-ups, the meta being very different from what it was at 2019 and probably Leo getting caught sleeping on his opponents.

Joker is a top tier character with a better kit, but his best kill set ups require such tight inputs. Byleth is easier to play and has more easily executable kill moves to finish stocks (forward tilt, fair, bair). Leo is still the GOAT, he just needs to pick a character and out adapt his opponents.
Honestly this is one underrated rivalry, I love seeing Glutto and Leo facing off against each other, it's always entertaining and they never disappoint. This was a great set
Can someone remind me Leo’s best wins this year? The only ones that come to mind is Spargo at crown, light at Genesis, and sonix at wave dash. The most frustrating thing about his slump is that In terms of head to head with top 10-15 players, Leo’s been so bad. At this point, he just feels like a top 20 player who can sometimes pull out a win, but isn’t at that level of consistency.

Game 4 Leo is not here anymore, that was a legendary récord. Top 8 Leo is almost gone. I don't wanna think this is the begin of the end of Leo's time and he will turn into an old memory who does good from time to time and when he faces his demons (Gluto, Tweek, Shuton, Sparg0, maybe Riddles and Proto, players like acola, Miya and Jakal, mickey moments like Zomba) he's done for the rest of the tournament.
Leo will remain a top 10 player as king as he plays I believe he will be the gate keeper to top 10 as long as he plays Hopefully we get a smas 6 and he shows us what’s up
I feel like Corrin or Byleth is a much better pick into Wario. Joker has to get too close and personal which is scary against Wario. Being able to our range Gluto with a sword makes this matchup a lot easier in my opinion. We saw in their last encounter Leo changed to Byleth on the final game and nearly took the game, only losing due to a full charged waft at ledge. I hope to see Leo really put a lot of time and effort in his Byleth and Corrin because they’ve given him a lot of success. His Joker has also given him a ton of success but just doesn’t seem like a good matchup against Gluto

Leo’s Byleth definitely does better against Gluto than his Joker simply because Byleth out ranges Wario. I also think Leo is just better with Byleth but that’s just my opinion. Anyway, Wario first has to close the distance on Byleth getting past his fairs and bairs and once he gets in on him he has to contend with Byleths nair which is extremely difficult to deal with. As I mentioned in my original comment in their previous match at a separate tournament Leo played Joker for I believe 3 games. He won 1 and lost 2. After the second loss he switched to Byleth and instantly looked a lot more comfortable in the match staying ahead the entire match until he unfortunately got hit with full charge waft at 17% on the edge of the stage and died.
Spoilers Idk if leo just keeps running into the worst players to face or if he's just not feeling it or just washed but it still feels weird to not see leo in grands. I think the last time was wavedash against sonix. Though its rather interesting to think that gluto is really the only player who has consistently beaten leo. Leo often goes back and forth against Sparg0 and sonix. Maybe tweek too as he has been doing well against leo, its just been a while since those two fought.
@mv2664 Leo is literally throwing the game and giving his opponents more chances to beat him by not playing Byleth and Corrin. They didn’t keep up with him, he got tired of keeping up with the game and what actually works in its terrible game design.
Leo is still playing really well. He’s still in the top echelon of players in the world, but it’s only natural that other players who are constantly grinding and streaming can figure out his playstyle and adapt. It doesn’t mean Leo can’t adapt and grow too, but these last few months seem like he’s unable to keep up with the changes anymore. Time is proving that characters with an X factor available at all times, especially if they have simple execution, are the most valuable characters in the game. Arsene is as great an X factor as any in the game, but it has specific conditions that can be played around for the duration. Steve’s diamon, anvil, and minecart, Kazuya’s EWGF, Rob’s gyro to death combos, and many others, are all X factors available more frequently and are harder to play around. Demanding characters are simply not good bracket characters. If they were, we’d see Pika and Joker dominating everything. Theoretical matchup spreads don’t mean anything now, it’s all about having an X factor at the ready to regain a lead or cement it.
Joker is broken but incredibly hard to play consistently throughout a bracket. He requires so much precision and correct decision making, which at top level is very difficult. Joker is similar to Pikachu and Sheik in this regard. At their peak they’re good characters but to play consistently at their peak is more difficult than not. Also, Leo was just significantly better than his competition in 2019-2020. His competition has caught up, new characters have come out that are more consistent in a bracket, and the meta even for vanilla ultimate characters has evolved a lot. Leo can’t simply skill diff his competition with Joker anymore.

Leo’s greatest weakness are character specialists like SkyJay, Onin, and Gluto. He even almost lost to Peanut. Leo’s old bag of tricks aren’t going to work anymore in this new meta. @DavionLane Actually ESAM was one of the very few competitive players consistently beating Leo for a time period. ESAM's problem is that he's not consistent, so he rarely makes it to Top 8, but when he's hot, he burns like an inferno.
Leo is always Testing Characters against his oponentes. He has won so much against Gluto that he is improving or getting the rust off of Joker. Time is proving that characters with an X factor available at all times, especially if they have simple execution, are the most valuable characters in the game. Arsene is as great an X factor as any in the game, but it has specific conditions that can be played around for the duration. Steve’s diamon, anvil, and minecart, Kazuya’s EWGF, Rob’s gyro to death combos, and many others, are all X factors available more frequently and are harder to play around. Demanding characters are simply not good bracket characters. If they were, we’d see Pika and Joker dominating everything. Theoretical matchup spreads don’t mean anything now, it’s all about having an X factor at the ready to regain a lead or cement it.

Joker is broken but incredibly hard to play consistently throughout a bracket. He requires so much precision and correct decision making, which at top level is very difficult. Joker is similar to Pikachu and Sheik in this regard. At their peak they’re good characters but to play consistently at their peak is more difficult than not. Also, Leo was just significantly better than his competition in 2019-2020. His competition has caught up, new characters have come out that are more consistent in a bracket, and the meta even for vanilla ultimate characters has evolved a lot. Leo can’t simply skill diff his competition with Joker anymore.

Leo’s greatest weakness are character specialists like SkyJay, Onin, and Gluto. He even almost lost to Peanut. Leo’s old bag of tricks aren’t going to work anymore in this new meta. @DavionLane Actually ESAM was one of the very few competitive players consistently beating Leo for a time period. ESAM's problem is that he's not consistent, so he rarely makes it to Top 8, but when he's hot, he burns like an inferno.
Leo is always Testing Characters against his oponentes. He has won so much against Gluto that he is improving or getting the rust off of Joker. All these long comments about how Leo is no Longer number 1 since the beginning of smash are lame. Its always the same thing. But comes Genesis Tournaments and everyone shuts up.

There was no Sparg0, Acola , Gluto, etc., + He got 3-0’d by BigD and thrown into losers. The dominance just isn’t there anymore. Mexico used to fear him, now he gets 3-0’d by players like skyjay
That was at best a regional and if he didnt win that it would be a pretty bad event for him but I do think calling him washed is odd def not the same level of dominance as before but Leo is still top 10 this year without question
