Fighting for pay on the wrong side of history - 2 mistakes in one choice. Who the F am I? No one really. Played my game long time ago in the Eastern Highlands of Rhodesia/Mozambique. Once out never looked back... took my battle to civvie street. Stupid is as stupid does. If I was a youngster and was addicted to the adrenalin I would have read the history FIRST ...and joined the Russ. Their cause makes far more sense... plus fighting an inevitable losing battle isn't my idea of clever. Once bitten twice shy. Hope he lives long enough to learn his lesson.

What nobody seem to realize is that he was caught inside the borders of Russia without a proper documents (007 like Licence to ...) with intent to kill Russian citizens . That IMO is something any court would take a very grim look at , let alone a Russian military court.
He has 3 things going for him in this case. He is alive , he is a bit dumb but honest about it and when he comes out in 20 years or so , he will be very experienced as a miner , lumberjack and builder of gravel roads , and with all that experience behind him, will have great prospects for employment in UK.

this mercenery will be treated well by the russians as a lot of ukrainians are surrendering to russians now and i hope this conflict wont go on for much more

They could not have made you proud. I refuse to believe that any nation would be proud of what was done to us. Your soldiers should stay at home within their own laws and regulations of conflict and then be under reasonable judicial punishment if they do very bad things to women.
I don’t know what this boy has done. I know he’s not smart to go there and do this. If he’s honorable he would be in his own military:

From what I’ve heard from others who went out there, one of the biggest challenges is the language barrier. When you’re in a platoon and an order or warning is being barked out in a foreign language, or even in English by someone for whom English isn’t their first language, the extra moment it might take to understand and absorb the information and react accordingly could put you at a disadvantage to your comrades and mean a higher risk of death, injury, or in this case, capture.

Oh, plus you’re on the bad side, oppressing the local Donbas population, that doesn’t want you there. Great war to be involved in, hah?

That's the problem. Hollywood and the media glorify war for the expressed purpose of suckering in the gullible and self-deluded. We are so heavily programmed that it seems almost every time the phrase 'Freedom and Democracy' is mentioned, most of us automatically take sides without looking deeply into what is actually going on. Even worse is when people start justifying wrong-doing when the narrative they believe in gets challenged by evidence or reality, which then causes them to deny the latter, often vehemently; sometimes violently.
