    Sometimes the story is more interesting than the project.
    Some time ago, a friend came to the door and put this piece of 100 year old barn board in my hands. This was a piece of wood from her family farm - specifically from the family barn. The barn had fallen down, and the property was no longer in the family.
    She only asked for two things. First, the big nails sticking out of one end needed to stay. And Second, she wanted it turned into some sort of shelf.
    (She later got me a few more pieces to go with the original, which gave us more to work with.)
    There would be no finish, no planing, no pristine clean joints. This was a rough piece of barnboard and it was going to stay a rough piece of barnboard.
    I added a shelf + brackets at the bottom to turn it into a small wall hanging shelf. I also routed out a channel on the back and glued in a piece of plywood to reinforce and strengthen the board.
    My friend might add a small mirror on the back, we’ll see.

    GREAT project Art. It's nice to be able to help someone save their memories. My only suggestion would be to cut some edging from another piece of barn board for the edges of the shelf, so that way you would not see the saw marks. But, I'm sure the project is at the new owners home and they very much appreciate what you have done for them.

    A little steel wool/vinegar solution will cause those cut ends to "age" and match perfectly.

    You can use pencil crayon to rub on the cut sides to make it match the colour of the wood

    Beautiful project! Just one comment: Maybe you should have cut thin strips of exposed edge from your other barn wood piece and used them as edge banding on the endgrain sides of the shelf?
    Tnx for you nice vids!!

  • @travel734

    Thanks for posting Art. I recently started doing some barn board pieces. One thing that troubled me was what to do about the end grain when I needed to cut a piece. Rather than looking at an edge that looks relatively new or resorting to stain, I found that Varathane has a weathered wood accelerator. Not a perfect match, but better than other alternatives that I have tried.

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  7 лет назад

      I worried about that also, but I found that this wood was so old that even the end grain looked, to me, to be darker than I thought a fresh cut would look

    • @MGWD

      In the past I have sawn off a thin strip of weathered board and used it as a veneer to cover freshly sawn end grain on a 'rustic' project. Works well!

    I see that this is an old video, but I got a LOT of useful info. Do have a question though. Do you know of a way to shorten a weathered board without sawing it? I'd like to create a wall hanging with reclaimed wood, but wish I could have a piece that was "broken off" on both ends instead of sawn on one end. Thank you for any ideas you have. Aimee

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  5 лет назад

      Even if you manage to break it, you'll have unweathered (images) wood exposed. Maybe if you snapped it and then lightly scorched the ends with fire? I got nothing else, sorry.

    Nice project. I noticed you have a few Irwin parallel clamps on your rack but you always go for your other ones. I've been thinking of getting some because they're inexpensive when compared to bessey or jet. Would it be worth it or am I better off just waiting til I can spend a little more. I appreciate your opinion as I've been following you for a couple years now.

    • @Wordsnwood
      @Wordsnwood  7 лет назад

      I simply prefer the Gross+Stabil ones. The irwin's are heavier. The irwins actually bite into the bar, whereas the others (like Bessey) have ridges that they lock into. I don't like that, but I knew another ww'er you preferred the Irwin style. It's all personal preference. If I lived in the US I might wait for the black friday Jet sale that usually happens. I've seen how Marc at the woodwhisper really liked their quick-release.
