  • This video is a little compilation of some helpful tips I have learned over the past few months as I have continued to play the lyre and matured in my knowledge and playing capacity.
    The two primary parts are
    1) Tips for sitting and holding the lyre in a way that relieves strain and cultivates good bodily posture and playing
    2) A brief commentary on two different lyre structures. The first, one with a bridge and a box (more reverb, greater acoustic sound, similar structure to guitar). The second, one without a bridge where the strings go directly into the instrument which has an intended but flat sound board (cleaner / clearer notes, greater harp-like sound).

Excellent tutorial! Sounds like you are an intermediate lyre player. I am a newbie researching lyres and harps and much of the information available out here is from professional lyre/harp players who seem to have a hard time remembering when they were new to the instruments, thus have difficulty translating basic information to novices. This can be overwhelming to us but your tutorial has helped immensely. Your information about posture and tone quality is invaluable. Thank you!

I am so glad it was of help to you! Thank you for your comment and for sharing the ways in which it's of help to you. It's always a help for me to know if the information shared is of use to those it's intended to aid. And I think it's probably accurate to affirm that I am an intermediate lyre player. I am certainly by no means a professional nor an expert on the instrument, but I have worked with it for a while now and though I don't have formal training in the lyre, I do with classical piano and that has been a huge help in picking up the lyre. If I can be of additional help to you, feel free to let me know either in comments or via email (enfoldedheartmusic@gmail.com). Many thanks again and wishing you the best on your lyre/harp journey!

Will you still compose for the 16 string lyre, although you now have a 19 string one? I love your music. Mine is a deerhead 16 string lyre. I'd like to build a good repertoire for her but I'm scared of being limited by so few strings. I hope you will keep composing for the 16 string lyre ❤

I'm currently working on another album and found it a bit too tempting to not use those two higher strings (B and C) especially when I've got it tuned to C major / a minor. But what I've done is added alternative notes in the sheet music when it goes higher than a 16-string has available which has thus far only been a handful of notes. So the songs are definitely still playable and lovely for someone who doesn't have the 19-string. I will definitely keep this in mind though! And I bet when I've got the tuning a little different, the song will naturally stay within the 16-string range.
I am certainly sympathetic to your fears about the string limitation though... It took me some time to let go of trying to play styles and ranges more akin to the piano (I don't have experience with the harp) and to enjoy the uniqueness of the lyre. Ended up calling for me to be creative and curious in ways I hadn't been before. I hope you enjoy it just as much as your other instruments!

@@Sandy-i9p4f That is so wonderful that you love your lyre! This is such a delight to hear. I find it to be just a lovely instrument... simple, soft, and quiet, but capable of wonderful beauty. (A bit more portable than a piano and perhaps your harp as well, which is a nice plus!).
And I am very touched by your excitement about the upcoming album. Thank you for your kind words and for sharing the joy you're finding in the lyre! Really wonderful to receive.
God bless you as well! Greetings in return from the United States
