  • Making very realistic trees for your model railroad, war gaming terrain or model diorama doesn’t have to be difficult, I have previously shown a detailed tutorial on making these very realistic trees using natural materials here:
    • Realistic Cheap and Ea...
    In this video I show you a continuous shot that’s been sped up showing just how easy it is to make these great trees.
    Feel free to sign up to my free newsletter at
    www.bouldercreekrailroad.com
    In the newsletter I’ll include additional tips for modelling, news related to model railroading, future videos that I’m planning on completing as well as updates about the website and new features.
    Thanks for watching
    Cheers

    This music takes me back. Back to a better time. A simpler time. I was 17, playing Marble Blast Ultra on the Xbox, rolling the ball from point A to point B. The only care in the world was of the coming weekend; where I might go and who I might see. I would get up to make a sandwich out of anything in the fridge that would fit between two slices of multigrain loaf. The procrastination felt better. The alcohol was more enjoyable. Consequences of my boyish schenannigans seemed non-existent. Near-death experiences felt more meaningful. Man, did I take those years for granted - as I'm likely still doing now.
    Because of this video I will now squeeze the most value from every day and wake up with conviction every morning rather than merely moving my body in 3D space. Thank you.
    Also: cool tree.

    Love all of your tree tutorials and the different methods that can be used. Still refer to these often. Even the cheaper bulk trees you can find online can be greatly improved with some of the steps you show in these videos.

    Babe it's so cool how you make your shelving unit appear like a t.v when you go out into the darkness to spray your tree. You surprise me often with your creativity. Well done!

    Nice example. I've always struggle with the flock/foam sticking to the branches (lower than the canopy) and it can really take away from the look. Seeing you apply the foam to the inverted tree gives a foundation layer for the right-side up application to fall on and stay off the core branches. (At least that is what I think is happening.) I'll have to focus on that more next round of the tree making.

    • @BoulderCreekRailroad
      @BoulderCreekRailroad  8 лет назад

      +Terranscapes I too still get the odd pieces sticking to the trunk, if it's really bad I'll put that tree up the back where it's less likely to be seen but if it's a tree that's near the front where it's going to be seen up close I'll use the tweezers to pluck off bits of foam from the trunk. It's time consuming but overall it can be worth the extra time.
      Cheers
      Luke

    Fantastic. I've watched videos of scale trees which take a day, or more, to make and thought there's no way I can be bothered with that. But your method is a bit more like it!

    • @BoulderCreekRailroad
      @BoulderCreekRailroad  8 лет назад

      +davie maclean That's the good thing about this tree, it's fast and easy. Even the commercial tree armatures take at least 5 minutes to make. As long as you have the time to collect the branches you'll be able to make a forest in not time!

    Great video Luke, I finally twigged that your branching out to greater things. Great way to save money when adding trees to the layout, as the off the shelf cost a fair packet. Many thanks for sharing- cheers Andy

    I have made similar trees with trunks from live-oak twigs, then hot-gluing lichen to form the canopy. Using a shaker for the foliage helps.

      +Annette Yasin Great idea, I've seen lichen used once or twice but never tried it myself. I'll have to get some and give it a go.

    Salutations from Moscow, Luke! You did a great tutorials. What kind of plants do you use for these trees? Thanks in advance.

    • @BoulderCreekRailroad
      @BoulderCreekRailroad  8 лет назад +1

      +Alex K Hi Alex, unfortunately I'm not 100% sure on the type of plant I used. I found them out the back near my house. The technique will work with any fine branch structured plant.You could try "super trees" from America or "Sea Foam" trees from the UK. The only reason I don't use those plants are because Australian quarantine is very strict when it comes to importing plant material.
      Hope that helps a little.
      Cheers

      +Matt Tucker Hi Matt, I'm not 100% sure what type of branch it is? I discovered it in parkland near my house in Australia. The technique will basically work with any fine structured branch. It works quite well with Super Trees (if you can get some)

      +Scott Downey Yeah my first tree took a little longer. This was maybe the 5 or 6th attempt. Some go faster or slower depending on how many layers of the woodland scenics foam cover you use.

    • @BoulderCreekRailroad
      @BoulderCreekRailroad  8 лет назад +1

      No not really, some are thicker and stickier than others. Some people also use cheap hair spray. But if you want you tree to last longer, once it's finished lightly mist the tree with scenic cement to give a stronger bond.
