This film excels at portraying the dread and powerlessness of domestic abuse situations. That opening scene when Elisabeth Moss is preparing to escape is such a fantastic introduction to her character and situation.

You boys nailed the entire film with the word "fresh", as in finally, a fresh take on an enduring theme and unique bit of film making. Elisabeth Moss (Offred in Handmaid's Tale) is amazing in both her emotional roller-coaster depiction, but also subtle turn from victim to predator at the end. The camera work and Leigh Whannell's direction make this a standout film, worthy of much praise and appreciation. Glad you boys liked it.

    • @JonInCanada1
      @JonInCanada1 3 года назад +1

@Johnny Cab Sorry, but that really wasn't a fresh take, it was just an updated version of Wells' original story. This film offers up, as the lads note, an additional wrinkle by setting it against the backdrop of spousal abuse and duplicity involving the brothers. The suspense is superior to Hollow Man and emotionally, this takes it's toll while Bacon's film was tediously predictable. I'm sure you'll disagree, which is fine, but this is my take on it.

I wanted to mention and get your opinion on something. When it was over, I said to my family that I thought she was the killer the whole time, and everything _WE_ saw was what she _IMAGINED_ was happening. @@cl8onj388 At first I thought maybe Adrain abused her so much she was messed up in the head and thought she was seeing things happen. And the movie wants you to think that maybe it’s all in her head. But then I thought would Adrain just randomly kill himself over her just running away one night. Like I kept thinking no one can just be invisible but the whole thing with the money he wanted everyone too think he was actually gone and the only thing that brings me to believe he is stalking her is because his brother was in on it too plus when Adrain goes after the little girl she spray the guy in the room he falls into the dresser then when she runs down the hall she gets stopped and I yelled there’s two guys. Adrain set his brother up so he could act like he was the victim after Cecelia was starting to figure it all out plus Adrain killed the sister cause he had the knife from the kitchen. Cecelia ran out of the house but he was still in the kitchen and he followed her back to his house then too the restaurant and killed her sister before she could give up his secret. So no Cecelia in my opinion was not crazy movie wanted us to think that Adrain and his brother were crazy.

I'd love to see it done well but I would push for practical effects. The Howling and American Werewolf in London set the benchmark so high every werewolf film has been reaching for it since. Very few Werewolf flicks have been genuinely good. The above two: Silver Bullet, Bad Moon, Dog Soldiers, Ginger Snaps, The Company of Wolves were good. Howl was ok and the 2010 Wolfman was descent but werewolf films haven't been as prolific as vampire films. That's a shame. Come on Leigh break the cycle..(?pun)

In some ways we're in an understated golden age of genre. It Follows, Get Out and Invisible Man, to pick three, are perfect genre movies. The storytelling is economical and precisely constructed - but feels organic and surprising when you watch. Each one has top drawer central performances. And each one has a clear, metaphor that not only has something real to say, but that works in harmony with the style and storytelling. What's funny to me is the director of It Follows then went on to take his fame and funding from that breakthrough movie and sink it all into a mad exploration of the exact opposite - the endless unfocused descent into delusion and conspiracy via Hollywood and signs and symbols, processed by an angry mind - Under The Silver Lake. It's so good, but in a completely different way.

Your discussion of this film was honestly fantastic, your best yet. Your comment about the title of 'the invisible man' doubling as a metaphor for the difficulty of spotting abuse (especially the non-violent kind, the kind that has only recently been given the term 'coercive control') was really on point. And I liked your back and forth about the final scene in which she kills her abuser, and that you both ended up agreeing that it was an important symbolic act that definitely didn't render her just as bad as him. Many victims of abuse don't have the ability to remain 100% morally pure when trying to survive or escape their abusers - sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

The original Unviersal Invisible Man was actually from 1933, not the 50s. And considering the time period the effects are amazing. They covered the actor Claude Rains head to toe in black velvet and put the clothes and bandages on over it, and filmed the scenes where he took them off in front of a black wall. They then put that footage over scenes they shot without him. It actually comes out seamless too, and you can't tell they didn't shoot him in those particular scenes.

I think one of the major pieces you’re missing on this is how they’re commenting on how women in most cases are not believed when claiming abuse, assault, violence, etc especially when perpetrated by a man. It was not surprising to me that the two GUYS reacting to this are wondering if she’s crazy or it’s really happening.....I would seriously doubt many women watching this would think anything other than it’s really happening. It’s a totally brilliant way to comment on the topic using the tension of a horror film. Awesome reaction guys! 💚

I think it was a reach when you tried to look at peoples perspective while WATCHING the movie.

If anything men being abused is a far more niche concept than a woman.

The fact that you are forgetting here is that within context it became an irrational fear.
You go into the borders of crazy in other peoples eyes if you think you are being haunted by a dead man.
THATS where crazy lies. Not the part where she thinks she is being abused.

Just to chime in about your discussion about the ending. I’m pretty sure the ending is actually hinting at her potential corruption. While she does defeat the villain, power corrupts and it wasn’t looking like she was about to ditch the invisible suit. Her friends disappointment and concern for her actions was also a good indication that she’s definitely crossed a line that has changed her. That’s my opinion of it anyway

The reason it's a true horror film is that reality IS more painful than the imagined fears we have. Trauma is a perfect horror villain - it can't be seen by others but it is real, it can disappear for a while - especially when things are going well - and then suddenly reappear, it follows us, stops us from functioning, causes us to hurt the people we love, and so on.

I knew this film woud be amazing when I saw it’s trailers. My mental health was fragile at the time of its release so I decided to leave it for a later date where I could really appreciate it as a film I would absolutely love. That meant not looking at reactions and reviews from some of my favourite react/review youtubers, including you guys! So glad I can backtrack and enjoy this content now!
First film in a while that made me actually jump, and feel stressed and feel full of dread during the entire first half of the film. The characters were believable, the oppressive suspense was well, oppressive, and I just can’t praise this film enough. It hasn’t changed history but it’s one of the best contemporary psychological horrors in how good it is in all avenues to be graded. So worth the wait!

You two need to watch Upgrade. It was also written and directed by Leigh Whannell and it came out around the same time as Venom (both films have similar premise, funnily enough) but it’s a fantastic film that has very similar camera work to The Invisible Man. Very underrated film imo. Both Upgrade and The Invisible Man showcase Leigh’s talent as a incredible director tbh ☺️

Would you guys consider reacting to the original one (1933), it’s much different than you might expect with almost dark undertones of humour throughout.
As for other modern horrors I can recommend Saint Maud (2020), Ritual (2017), Host (2020), Under the shadow (2016), Creep (2014), Hush (2016), Gerald’s Game (2017) and Green Room (2015).
