* A cappella is a musical style where a singer or group of singers perform without instrumental accompaniment. The term comes from the Italian phrase alla cappella, which means "in the style of the chapel" or "in the church". The style was originally used to differentiate between Renaissance polyphony and Baroque concertato musical styles. A cappella music can be polyphonic, or multipart, and the singers use their voices to create harmonies and sounds that mimic instruments.
