  • A pretty rare 12" mix of a 1982 release by the legend that is Diana Ross. 'Work That Body' was the 3rd single lifted from her 1981 LP 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love'. It would be the first album that Diana recorded for RCA having left Motown who had really created her, thanks to the Supremes and their 1960's run of hits. Diana's 1980 opus 'Diana' yielded the hit singles 'Upside Down', 'I'm Coming Out' and 'My Old Piano'. Having been lured to RCA for a purported 20 million dollars, Diana would release six albums with the label during the 1980's.
The title track - the cover of the Frankie Lymon classic 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love' was a huge hit around the world in late 1981 and early 1982. 'Mirror Mirror' was also a chart success for Diana in America, but the 3rd single, the subject of this post was only a hit in Britain where it made the Top 10, 40 years ago this month, and also a sizable success in Holland. Co-Penned by Paul Jabara who had won an Academy Award for the Donna Summer classic 'Last Dance' from 'Thank God It's Friday' and had provided the smash duet for Donna and Barbra on their 1979 release 'No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)'. Paul also composed the camp classic 'It's Raining Men' and there is a refrain in this track that sounds like it would be used in that song that was recorded the next year by The Weather Girls.
'Work That Body' is a light and fun R&B song and this extended version is suitably indulgent but very timely as the Jane Fonda aerobic workouts were just starting to take off. I have used various gif's of people exercising, including the icon herself - the 2 time Oscar winning actress. Diana Ross co-wrote and Produced this track, but I wondered if it was another Chic production as it felt a little reminiscent of the other Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards confections listed above for Diana's previous album. The pair were requested for this opus but they were occupied with Debbie Harry and another Chic project.
A bit of levity for a freezing Friday (here in Sydney, Australia) or a Thank God Its Friday, or just a Fun Friday!
