This really takes me back. I live in London now, but I spent all my teenage years in Lincoln back in the 70s. I must have walked up and down Steep Hill hundreds of times. Many thanks for uploading.
Sadly the old drill hall has had to close its doors for the last time due to this frigin virus carry on plus no football down at sincil bank, just stillness and ghostly, and yet there is still something very special about the place. My spiritual home. Oct 2020 🙏❤🙏❤🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
these videos are fantastic, I graduated from uni a year ago and decided to stay in lincoln as i fell in love with the place. Looking back at these old images you can see how different the city was only 20 years ago! I look forward to the next video
Ahh memories. I would have been about 12 then - used go to the City Centre a lot as a kid. That bus station is gone now but I recall there was a car park on the roof.
CO-OP car park on the roof at the time, and the shop was accessed from inside the Bus Station as well as another entrance from the main square the other side :)
Great video, I have many childhood memories of Lincoln from this time. Family is still there but I'm now in London. Would have been great to see St. Marks and the development of Tritton Rd as it was around that time, work began on the new St. Marks. If you have anymore videos, please upload!
When I was a kid, my Dad told me the dimpled effect on the walls of the Midland Bank (HSBC) was created by poor children being made to force their fingers into the concrete...
This is on a Sunday midday. Quiet, sleepy hardly anybody about. Not like now! Look at it on Sundays today, extremely busy you can hardly walk without someone bumping into you!
This is excellent. Videos like this are ten a penny now that nearly everyone has a cam of some sort, but it's not often well shot videos of the 1980s or early 1990s, like this, are seen. I wish there were better ones of Grimsby but all I can find are people goofing around videoing from a car or a motorbike, and consequently much that would be of interest is missed.
Its a great video, it really is. Sad that the city has become so full of corruption now. How half of the new buildings got planning permission i would say is beyond me but sadly that's not true. We all know how some of them got planning permission. Lincoln City Council is a disgrace.......
I go back to the 1940s so I can recall many fine buildings that were demolished in the name of progress. But yes some areas have improved beyond recognition. Thanks for your comment.
We live in a culture of leisure and tourism now, it wasn’t until lockdown that we suddenly had a shock reminder of how much quieter and utilitarian life often used to be.
Recognise a lot - I'd also like to see Ropewalk, St Marks and that area down to Triton Road. I think Brayford pool has seen an improvement but sadly the town seems a lot noisier, more disquiet
@@Handmethekeys shame,i was there about four or five weeks ago i don't think I noticed them. Will be going back soon for my new ims football strip home and away. July 2021🔴⚪🔴⚪🔴 LINCOLN LOUD AND PROUD

Its amazing how much of this has gone now, ruined in the name of progress. Used to love our indoor and outdoor markets, our green colour buses, ect, shame.
no homeless street sleepers/beggars back then,no spice heads, less drugs..lincoln will never be as quiet again as it is in this video..what went wrong? because its not as if the city is a lot bigger now than it was then.a bit yeah but mainly in terms of people as there was an explosion of immigrants and students a few years back, but there are(in national average figures)large amounts of beggars, drug users and homeless people for such a small city
Students bring money into cities, many dont like student accommodation being used where there once was a shop. Fact is shops close down because locals dont use them, they avoid them like the plague and then moan when they close down. College and university students aren't responsible for the high crime and unemployment rates in area's. Who'd rent out a room to some crack head who'd not pay rent, invite junkies back, urinate on the floor and set fire to the place. Many homeless people enjoy the lifestyle of begging and not working, its ideal in the summertime and quite amusing to find that during the colder months the population halves, the homeless go home, many actually have homes but adopt the homeless life during the summer or warmer month's. I know of a few professional homeless people, one owns a 26ft cabin cruiser that's moored in torquay, he's also got a vw camper and an audi tt outside his flat. Plenty like that, dont shave for a week, Matt the hair up, put on dirty clothing with a ripped backpack and sleeping bag and go out begging, they'll sleep on the streets during summer to catch the early morning workers and night time revellers. Most people I know, know of at least 1 person like this. Big Issue sellers dont need to be homeless to sell the magazine, they only need to have been homeless at some point in the past 12-18 month's. It's a 50/50 split of money collected, no tax needed to pay and they can still claim unemployment benefits. Many of the Big sellers make close to £500 a week selling the big issue, and they are also claiming benefits. So for many it's a good living. I know people who also let them keep the change when buying the big issue
@@adrinathegreat3095 yeah I know the score, you are bang on, I know a few of the 'homeless' in Lincoln personally, and ymca lot, although there obviously are some 'real' cases and genuine down and outs that are too far gone. Oh I wasn't suggesting the students were responsible for increase in drugs and crime, merely looking at population increase as a whole, but it just seems to me there were a lot less hard drugs in the 80s and 90s in Lincoln although it was still there,it seems now (from the figures) that for the population size we have over average hard drug user numbers/homeless numbers for the size of the population, granted most city's homeless have gone up in recent years due to the immigration crisis, but Lincoln more than most.we have seen many drug related deaths in the city centre and high street in the past 5/10 years, and with such a big spice/legal high problem, Lincoln was the first city in the UK to ban the sale (I think or use) but Lincoln was in the headlines for it, its just a big mad how its gone from a 'quiet' litlle city to the UK drug capital lol. Its still a lovely city with a great diverse bunch of folks, a great university and student life, awesome history, a lot to boast of and still developing and growing,we are lucky really, there is a lot worse city's to have on your doorstep.
Littlewoods was sold to Primark by the Barclay brothers in about 2005 and it is their redeveloped store that now stands on the site. Marks and Spencer is a little further down the High Street in the same building they've been in for the past seventy years
Lincoln has certainly changed for the better....more buzzy place to go out...and the council need to raise their game with more safe sheltered accommodation for the homeless etc
It hasn't changed for the better at all, it has become a City which now has no industry or decent jobs, a economy built on the University and students and student accommodation/eating and drinking, the rest of the City is suffering massively as a result.
The waterside shopping centre would have only just had opened with it being the early 90s. Great footage!
Thank you. Lovely memories of how Lincoln used to be. Not quite as it is now!
I know. It’s a lot better now.

We used to eat at that little woods
Same, 5x breakfast items for a quid :D upstairs.....bargain :D
The Still pub! Used to go to karaoke on a Thursday then went to Ritzy's afterwards and didn't work Friday! Happy days....
This brought back memories! Nice footage :) I do miss the Sunday’s where everything was closed.
It's a lot quieter when all the shops were closed on a sunday!
My home town, would have been around 10 years old when this was made.
Feels strangly relaxing 😌 😎
