I played this for the first time tonight. I hadn't really given it consideration or even watched your videos on it because I'm not a huge fan of the comic book hero theme. However, I was blown away with how fun it was. This was the first deckbuilder I've played other than Dominion, and boy was it fun. Now I actually am going to buy it and here I am watching your videos
Thanks for another great rules explanation, Rodney. I am really looking forward to seeing you and Luke play this game. I just received my copy on Friday.
Hey Sean - I hope you guys have a great time with this. I broke this out with Luke and my old brother just this weekend and we got kicked all around by Loki. Time for you to step in and finish the job!

So I normally watch your videos on how to play a board game before I buy it to be sure it’s going to be a good fit with my game group. I played this game at a buddy’s last weekend and I ordered it from my local game store with dark city, new mutants and guardians of the galaxy. I’m just watching this bc I’m excited to play it again. Thank you!! Having played several deck builders, I was wondering why the official rules for this one seemed needlessly complicated. Watching this video really helps. They should pay you to write a new rule book for them. :)
I know a lot of work goes into writing rulebooks, so I don't know if I'd want to write them, but I certainly wouldn't mind being part of a group that proofreads them before the games hit the shelf.

Some questions: If you have enough attack points, can you attack two villains? Can you play cards, attack, buy and then play more cards? (in any situation it makes sense) Or asking in a different way, can you only buy/attack/play once per turn? If I understood correctly, every player turn you draw from the villain deck, right? Or is it as a team and you only draw once and then all players get to play? Let's say you buy 3 cards and run out of cards in the hero deck. Do you keep the cards you had, shuffle the discard pile and continue?
1) You can attack multiple villains on your turn. You must apply damage 1 villain at a time though, finishing off the first before moving onto the second. 2) You may buy/attack/play in any order. If you end up with more cards in your hand, you can continue to play them after buying. Remember though, cards that you buy will normally end up in your discard pile. 3) You flip a villain card during each player turn. So in a 3 player game, a villain would come out at the start of each of those player's turns. 4) If the Hero Deck runs out, do not reshuffle it. Unless the game has been won or lost by the end of the turn in which the deck runs out, the game will end. It will be considered a draw between good and evil, and the player with the most VP will win.
I am a visual learner - without this I would have not figured out how to play. Thanks for making this. I was a little confused because the starting turn you showed was not a starting hand. I figured it out though just took me a couple of rewatches.
***** I have to say I agree with Leo McNeil . I think it had to do that we didn't see it played in a way. I had to watch the gameplay and revisit this video just to understand because there was so much to know about. This is my opinion, and you may have to experiment making a video for another game like this and see if this will work: 1) Go REALLY basic with the rules. I think you went too deep into talking about the cards that had "Ambush" "Fight" effects save that for gameplay. It was just way too much information for us newbies, it made sense to you after you played it and after I watched the gameplay video. 2) Maybe separate the video from setup from how to play would help. 3) This may make things a little harder for you but you should add video effects on your videos. For example, highlight areas on cards rather than pointing. when you pointed out the "attack points" on each card, I think it would be easier if it was highlighted with video effects at the same time and then show how it was added together. Especially the "super power ability" part (for gambit's stuff). I don't like comparing apples to oranges, but check out Geek & Sundry's video and see how "popups" appear to show users how it was calculated and what things do. We always have the pause button if we need to use it. Final thought about "popup" information. It would be nice to have you show the order of play as well so we can follow along. we heard you talk about it but I lost sight of it because there were so many other rules from it. so for this game, you would show a REALLY basic instruction : 1) Draw villian card 2) Lay out cards [a] attack. [b] recruit [c] etc. 3) discard etc. Keep up the good work and thank you for doing these things! I am sure it's a lot of hard work and we thank you!
Simon Song Some things have changed as our series has grown in how information is presented, which may address some of these ideas. It's an interesting challenge trying to satisfy the learning needs of each gamer. Thanks for the feedback.
Great tutorial vid! Managed to grasp most of the basics. Gonna play this for the first time this Saturday with my friend. Aside from the ones you mentioned in the video, do you have any tips for a total newbie?
After a while you don't notice the characters have the same or different artwork. There are benefits to both ways. The Different styles is more visually appealing and makes each power more distinctive. Where the similar art on a single hero helps with the sorting after the game.
Actually, I got in my first play right after watching this video. I lost on the very last turn. I had the Dark Portal scheme facing Loki. 6 of the 7 schemes were out and there was ONE villan card left. I needed 11 damage to beat Loki because of the Dark Portal, but could only muster 10. Next turn of course, the final villan card had to be flipped and it was the final scheme twist. It was a very tense game.
@@WatchItPlayed 8 years to reply LOL!! I enjoyed it... We have moved on to other games (well, mainly I have moved on, kids are to cool to play games with dad anymore)
I played a few games of this solo today and had fun.1 win, 1 loss and a draw. I really like the diffferent combo's you can creat with the different heroe's. This game will only get better with expansions and more of our favorite heroe's joining the fray!!!!!
Even though this is an older one, I'll start by saying awesome video.... I watched a few different reviews and tutorials, but I found yours the most helpful - not too long but still covers everything rather well... 2nd thing I'm gonna say is I've never played a deck building game, but I do love Marvel... I'm thinking of ordering this base game within the next week or 2 - if I like it, I'll probably order an expansion or 2 (or more) down the road.. heard "Dark City" is the first expansion I'll want to get ;) My only real question is do you consider this game to be a good deck building game for beginners to the deck building world?
Hey John, thanks for the kind words! I don't actually review on this channel, so I can't help with that question (the answer will be different for different people)
@@WatchItPlayed Watching a few vids which also included some gameplay... I think it suits me very well - I'm just not sure on some of the others I'd be trying to introduce it to ;) None of us have ever played any deck building games before - and it's all adults with the youngest two being an 18 year old mom and a 22 year old college student, where as the oldest is well over 50 and a couple 40 somethings like me mixed in... sometimes it's tough to teach an old dog new tricks, lol... but I know I'd enjoy it as long as the other do too... I feel like I want to give it a try but I'm not sure if it's the best beginner deck building game or not - looks like it's got the most expansions so it appears to be the best for adding more down the road if it does go good - although it might get pricey adding too many, it would constantly keep adding to the replayability... I'm probably around 90% towards buying it - but the 10% still has questions, lol thanx anyway bro - I knew you didn't give full out reviews, but thought you'd have enough experience with deck builders to give your opinion on if it's a good deck builder for beginners that have never tried deck builders before - I wouldn't hold it against you if someone disliked it ;)
@@johnspearing147 It's really tough to assess what is good for beginners, because even beginners have different levels of interest, skills, capacity, etc. I've seen beginners dive right into very complex games, and novices struggle with the most basic of concepts. I just stay out of trying to make those assessments, and leave it to the viewers to assess the best they can for their own groups (as they will be the experts in that regard). That said, the nice thing about a co-operative game like this, is that you can play it solo yourself and make sure you have a full grasp of the rules, and then map out a strategy for how to introduce it to your group. All the best!
Thanks for the great video! Is there a limit to the number of villains that can escape the city? Would a certain number trigger a loss? Thanks so much!
Thanks for the video, great as always. My 7 year old son loves Marvel and gaming. If I manage the reading for him, do you think this game would be to difficult for him?
Jeff Messina It's really hard to say Jeff - it will depend quite a bit on the child. On the upside, this is co-operative, so you helping out doesn't break the game at all. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I like how if you put the game title before the components, it makes stuff sound so much cooler: LEGENDARY villain deck, LEGENDARY game board, LEGENDARY player.
Hello, i just got this but i already became a fan of this game. I would like to ask that what expansions do you recommend for this game for a higher challange ?
Hey there - glad you’re enjoying the game. I avoid reviewing or recommending on this channel, as I find it hard to say for others what they will or won’t like.
it's been five years since you posted this video so here's a question. How often do you play this now? Do you use the expansions? is it worth the investment?
+TheFlyingAdamGrayson Hey Adam. I don't review or recommend on this channel. I would find it very difficult to say for someone else whether or not they would find the investment worth it. A game one person loves, another person will dislike (and vice versa), so the answer will be different for each person. How often I play games isn't very helpful either, as my work schedule means that I often don't play some of my favorite games as often as I'd like - so number of plays is not a good measure of my feelings towards a game. Either way, I do hope that the videos can give you a sense of the game okay to help you decide if it might be a good fit for you. Thanks for checking these out!
Hey Watch It Played! Great videos and Kudos to you for being smart enough to do something like this. 10 years ago I was at a Gencon and I took my video camera and recorded myself playing the Anachronism card game and put it on RUclips. I was thinking back then...why oh why dont game makers put their games on youtube or the internet for exposure and people to learn? Hope this channel works out well for you as it is something I should have done! On the topic of Marvel Legendary..We liked the game a first, but as we got the expansions then the game seems to get out of hand with card combos and effects and layered game effects. Like when a person plays multiple @ (super power) symbols. We had to remember each @ only triggers once but playing another could trigger the last card but not the card before that. But now having the Dark City expansion, we argued over Iceman whose card says "for each other @ played this turn." Okay so is Iceman special and no mater how you lay your cards down and the @ triggers multiple times? And that just makes the game confusing having the straight up rule in the book but now this card supersedes the rules? And when a card says Rescue a Bystander (Xavier, Jean Grey) can these be Bystanders in play? Or do they come off the extra Bystander stack? Or can the player chose which? When the game flows we like it but when people get card combos that keep them drawing and drawing and their turns take several minutes the impatient people at the table develop a lot of angst unfortunately. And also we get to debating the gray areas of card text or rules so now we dont play it as much or chose a different game to play unfortunately.
Thanks for the kind words about the videos :) As for your experience with the game, perhaps for your group, avoiding the expansions is a good idea? Or the game may just not be a good fit overall for your set of gamers.
***** My gaming group would be correct. I am the only Super Hero Geek among them. I would have to find similar genre of players to play games like Super Munchkin, Legendary, or any game Super Hero themed. They are more Agricula, Settlers, and Pirate cove types. We might just need a rules guru for more complex level of plays (a judge) as we kabitz too much or mechanics over games with layers. Thanks for responding so quickly and keep up the good videos!
I have a question, can you attack villains if you don't have enough attack points and ultimately make them easier to defeat for someone else? Or do you need exact/excess damage to attack a villain?
To attack a villain you must be able to defeat it. There is no way to track damage being accumulated, so that it carries over to the next player's turn - the villain either dies on your turn, or it's alive on the next turn at full health. Hope that helps!
Hi, fantastic teacher u are :) , anyhow I am still confused about the player starting deck if I understand it correctly the first 2 turns u only can only draw shield troopers and agents , right ?
That's right, you will draw from your deck each turn, once it's gone, you create a new deck again by shuffling your discard pile (which may now have new cards that you bought in the previous turns). Hope that helps. If you watch a couple episodes of the play through, it may help clear this up.
Been collecting Marvel comics and cards since I was a kid. This game immediately stood out to me and has always been on my radar. And thanks to coming across your instructional video, I've just picked it up from my local comic shop! Thanks Rodney! P.S. Marvel should create an Alpha Flight Expansion as a thank you for making this video! Not sure if you're familiar, but Alpha Flight are the best superhero team out of Canada, and are "Canada's answer to the Avengers"! ^_^ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Flight
Hey! Just got the game. Was left with a couple questions. Ymir has an effect where a player chooses to KO someone wounds. Can the person who defeats ymir choose themselves? Also, the captain america with the effect where he gains recruit or attack from different colors. Does this effect include himself and shield cards? Thanks for any feedback.
I had a question: Should the shield deck consist of just shield officers or also the shield agents and troopers? Otherwise I don't know how you could end up with more of those in your hand
Only Shield Officers should be in there. You do not gain more of the agents or troopers (and you don't really want to, they are weak cards that you'll quickly want to start KOing out of your deck once you start getting the better ones).
just got it today! lol. thank you for posting this and helping me 7.5 years into the future :)

You're so helpful! I can't wait to play this game with my friends. :)
I hope you have a great time :)
Well here we go, my long awaited Legendary box arrived this week so its just being set up with your videos nearby :)
I hope you had fun playing this one Mark!
Legendary job of explaining the game Rodney!
:P
YES!!!! So excited! Been waiting for this!
Great tutorial vid! Managed to grasp most of the basics. Gonna play this for the first time this Saturday with my friend. Aside from the ones you mentioned in the video, do you have any tips for a total newbie?
No tips specifically, the main thing, is don't give up and have fun :)
Thank you so much for making it easy to understand
You're very welcome Shanae, very glad you found it helpful!
Great video. Can you ignore the semi co op part and just make it full co op?
I think that would have to be a house rule.
After a while you don't notice the characters have the same or different artwork. There are benefits to both ways. The Different styles is more visually appealing and makes each power more distinctive. Where the similar art on a single hero helps with the sorting after the game.
It certainly did help with sorting!
Another awesome video Rodney!
Thank you Warder!
I just ordered this game! I cant wait for it to show up... Though it will be a bit before I can play... It is a Christmas present for my son...
You and your son enjoy playing?
@@WatchItPlayed 8 years to reply LOL!! I enjoyed it... We have moved on to other games (well, mainly I have moved on, kids are to cool to play games with dad anymore)
@@houtex1973 It happens - but they sometimes come around again :)
I am here because of the Buffy one. Seems fun.
Thanks for checking it out!
Great intro video Rodney!
you do a great job explaining your games : )
+Solo Play Gamer Thank you very much!
Super helpful, def earned the sub thanks!
Thank you!
looking forward to seeing the play through of this game!
I played a few games of this solo today and had fun.1 win, 1 loss and a draw. I really like the diffferent combo's you can creat with the different heroe's. This game will only get better with expansions and more of our favorite heroe's joining the fray!!!!!
(like Punisher)
Happy Birthday Rodney!
Nice job, keep those videos coming
That guide was legendary!
Thanks :)
Even though this is an older one, I'll start by saying awesome video.... I watched a few different reviews and tutorials, but I found yours the most helpful - not too long but still covers everything rather well...
2nd thing I'm gonna say is I've never played a deck building game, but I do love Marvel... I'm thinking of ordering this base game within the next week or 2 - if I like it, I'll probably order an expansion or 2 (or more) down the road.. heard "Dark City" is the first expansion I'll want to get ;)
My only real question is do you consider this game to be a good deck building game for beginners to the deck building world?
Hey John, thanks for the kind words! I don't actually review on this channel, so I can't help with that question (the answer will be different for different people)
@@WatchItPlayed Watching a few vids which also included some gameplay... I think it suits me very well - I'm just not sure on some of the others I'd be trying to introduce it to ;)
None of us have ever played any deck building games before - and it's all adults with the youngest two being an 18 year old mom and a 22 year old college student, where as the oldest is well over 50 and a couple 40 somethings like me mixed in... sometimes it's tough to teach an old dog new tricks, lol... but I know I'd enjoy it as long as the other do too...
I feel like I want to give it a try but I'm not sure if it's the best beginner deck building game or not - looks like it's got the most expansions so it appears to be the best for adding more down the road if it does go good - although it might get pricey adding too many, it would constantly keep adding to the replayability...
I'm probably around 90% towards buying it - but the 10% still has questions, lol
thanx anyway bro - I knew you didn't give full out reviews, but thought you'd have enough experience with deck builders to give your opinion on if it's a good deck builder for beginners that have never tried deck builders before - I wouldn't hold it against you if someone disliked it ;)
@@johnspearing147 It's really tough to assess what is good for beginners, because even beginners have different levels of interest, skills, capacity, etc.
BAG_217 It depends on the scenario. It may say that if too many escape, you lose.
Great tutorial.
Regards from Costa Rica
Greetings back to you, from Canada - thanks for checking out the video!
This was really helpful! Nice video.
You're certainly welcome. Glad you found it useful!
Excellent video! Another game to go onto my buy list, my wife will not be impressed!
Uh-oh! Be on your best behavior then :)
I like how if you put the game title before the components, it makes stuff sound so much cooler: LEGENDARY villain deck, LEGENDARY game board, LEGENDARY player.
lol, an unintended bit of epic titling :)
I wanted to buy this game before watching the video but I'm having a hard time finding a good site to buy it from.
Any recommendations?
I’m not sure - best of luck though!
@@WatchItPlayed THX! I think I have already found something for a decent price.
GL with your channel the videos are great I hope it keeps doing well!
Psyched for this. I'm ready!
This video helped so much thank you
You're very welcome!
Watch It Played That's true, maybe i will try dark city and guardians of the galaxy expansions.
it's been five years since you posted this video so here's a question.
I just got into this yesterday and my whole play group who are Avid magic players love this game.
This was so helpful!
So glad you enjoyed Freeze!
:D
Thanks for the kind words about the videos :)
As for your experience with the game, perhaps for your group, avoiding the expansions is a good idea? Or the game may just not be a good fit overall for your set of gamers.
***** My gaming group would be correct. I am the only Super Hero Geek among them. I would have to find similar genre of players to play games like Super Munchkin, Legendary, or any game Super Hero themed. They are more Agricula, Settlers, and Pirate cove types. We might just need a rules guru for more complex level of plays (a judge) as we kabitz too much or mechanics over games with layers. Thanks for responding so quickly and keep up the good videos!
Robert Stoffel My pleasure! Have fun gaming :)
This guide was amazing!!!
Glad you liked it!
Mr. Stark I dont feel so good 8:47
Bravo, excellente vidéo (from France)
Been collecting Marvel comics and cards since I was a kid. This game immediately stood out to me and has always been on my radar. And thanks to coming across your instructional video, I've just picked it up from my local comic shop! Thanks Rodney!
P.S.
Marvel should create an Alpha Flight Expansion as a thank you for making this video! Not sure if you're familiar, but Alpha Flight are the best superhero team out of Canada, and are "Canada's answer to the Avengers"! ^_^ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_Flight
David Roberts So glad you enjoyed the videos - and I support your desire to get Alpha Flight into the game!
+Guiomar Camano Yes and yes.
