My rock and metal genre tier list, ranking them all from S to F tier: metalcore, pop-punk, black metal, death metal, emo, djent, grunge, nu-metal, emo rap, midwest emo, power metal, easycore, ska, skatepunk and more!
    * Why metalcore bands like Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying rank higher than death metal and black metal bands
    * Why third-wave ska ranks so low, despite bands like The Bosstones and Goldfinger having commercial success
    * How grunge artists like Nirvana and Alice In Chains and nu-metal bands like Linkin Park and Slipknot changed everything

Finn, i'm not gonna say that you forgot this or this subgenre but I will say that you left out alot and in a weird fashion. It seems like you created subgenre with discussable choices to fits in and left out real sub-divisions by amalgamating bands that doesn't belong together.
Not complaining just saying that i'm puzzled with your fragmentation off subgenres 🤣. I would probably really enjoy talking music for an entire evening with you and see how different we see a scene as two different person of the same era but from different country... anyway cheers to you man 😎

IMO its because they realistically grew into the success they have from not sticking to the Thrash formula. If they had stuck to what they were doing on "Kill'em all" then they would probably be a Slayer or Megadeth level band. Raid shadow legends! Made by a developing company run by a chairman for the world's largest gambling lobbying group, owned by an Australian gambling company that primarily makes, you guessed it, SLOT MACHINES! Upon acquisition of the game development company the CEO gave some speech about expanding to other areas related to their business and implementing their knowledge to grow these other closely related areas or some shit basically equating to "use our knowledge of how to make slot machines that people pour money into and generate ludicrous profits.. Implement that knowledge into the mobile gaming platform which is obviously closely related to the gambling business.. Prey on little kids that we cannot reach in our target market with our slot machines.. Take their and their parents money and create Lifelong gambling addictions hopefully encouraging them to play our slots later down the line!" They tell every sponsored RUclipsr EXACTLY WHAT TO SAY! How many cookie cutter raid shadow legends ads have you seen every RUclipsr from a car channel, cooking channel, punk rock channel.. It doesn't matter. There's tens of thousands of these BS ads out there. THE GAME IS AWFUL! It's literally the epitomy of the absolute worst of mobile gaming.. Progress is directly linked to your credit card... You can literally put it on auto so you don't have to play the awful game until the next time you need to type your credit card number in to progress again.. At which point you think you've gotten some joy out of the game but you haven't.. You admire your shiny new character and then auto through more of the boring egregious campaign until the next time you have to stop to spend some money! It's literally the scummiest thing ever. Raid shadow legends is going in the Z tier! I hope they get what's coming to them.

Nothing new has evolved from it that is still recognisably "djent". On the basis of Periphery alone, I would slot "Djent" (or progressive metal if you're splitting hairs) in C.

So true. Pretty much all of Metalcore is Djent infused by now. So the influence factor is pretty large. Also there's this splitting of Djent into different styles. Just look at the difference between Meshuggah, Vildhjarta, Modern Day Babylon, (early and current) Intervals or heck even Polyphia. Djent can be implemented in many different styles.

No mention of post-punk? Sure, it's old folks music, at this point, but it's super-influencial and still culturally relevant. Remember all those alt-rock, buzz bands from the early 2000s that totally aped Gang of Four and Joy Division? Plus, I hear a lot of Robert Smith in many emo/pop-punk vocalists and even the emo rappers. And I think Hot Topic will always seem to have Smiths, Cure, or JD represented on their t-shirt racks. It's at least a B tier.

Being a bit of an old-school punk enjoyer kinda guy myself, I know for sure my list would look very different indeed.
Perhaps I should make my own list with my criteria without worrying about staying objective.
I truly appreciate your attitude about making this list and encouraging the viewer to disagree.

Holy shit. That is an almost perfect chart of influence and success. Tried to figure something like this out for years and got stuck on any single band that made an impact either on tthe scene or myself or a specific genre. Well, quantification is much simpler as it seams.

Now as for my complaint regarding this one, no traditional Heavy Metal, Doom Metal, Goth Rock, Industrial, Folk Metal, Prog but all these Core and Punk styles that sound the same to me. Bah!

The "example" track that was playing during the deathcore segment (at 15:41) is "Unanswered" by Suicide Silence.
_Also,_ that style of singing (described at 16:51) commonly found in grunge, post-grunge, butt rock, etc.-popularized by singers like Eddie Vedder, Gavin Rossdale, and so forth is actually called *"yarling".*

Finn, I really wanna see some kind of analysis on why bands of mystery make such waves in the scene. Slipknot, GWAR, Ghost, Mushroomhead, Sleep Token....all these bands have severely dedicated followers yet some dont even know who the members are. Is the magic in the mask? Or is it just the simple mystery of these artists that carries the full interest. I love your analysis videos man, they are absolutely stellar. Stay metal.
