  • Following the success of Sparkle (1976) Aretha Franklin and Curtis Mayfield reunited to collaborate on this 1978 LP, the fourth of five records by Aretha that have yet to be reissued in the CD era. Eight of the 9 tracks were written by Mayfield. The final track, I'm Your Speed, was credited to Ms. Franklin and actor Glynn Turman, to whom she was married at the time. Shared for historical purposes. I do not own the rights.

    OH MY GOD!! Can you believe the vocal on that first track. Absolutely brilliant!! Aretha was just unbelievable wasn't she? Won't ever be another like her. Somebody please put this out again. Package it with Sparkle, remastered with new pics and liner notes, as the Mayfield sessions. I seem to remember reading a while back that Aretha didn't really like working with Curtis Mayfield because his arrangements always made her sing in her higher register. Whether that's true or not, you can't argue with the results. Curtis brought out the best in her. I want this album. How did I miss it back in the day?! Didnt have alot of coin back then. Often it came down to choosing one record over another. Let's see, 1978? I must have chosen some disco record instead. Don't pile on me all at once people. I was young and a product of the times. Do the hustle?

      @@tonymckinney1355 she said he likes to work fast, and she said they are two versions of giving him something he can feel. Aretha wanted to sing a certain way and Curtis Mayfield wanted her to sing another so the version that became a big hit is Curtis Mayfield version the way he wanted Aretha to sing it. The other version that Aretha wanted to sing it in her way I guess you can say it got put on the shelf

    I'm legit confused more people don't like this album. I've been playing it regularly for over 20 years and it actually gets better with time. I'd personally take this over the Sparkle soundtrack, but that's a matter of personal taste. I dunno. It's two geniuses - albeit past their primes - doing what they do. How can it not at least be worthy? Deeply underrated.

      You KNOW how WE grew up. So you know it depended on who was listening at the time. An Aretha fan was always going to support her. But the fickle fans/sometimey fans/fairweather fans on the other hand, were the ones following what was trendy in the discos at the time.

      MsTexas73 , I agree, also I think even `LaDiva` has some gems as well.. Seems like after the fabulous `With Everything I feel In Me`album , Atlantic threw any efforts for marketing out the window with the exception of `Sparkle` ... Just look at the album covers of Hey Now Hey, You and LaDiva, those are some of the worst album covers I`d ever seen for a major singer and `LaDiva is such a awful title.....Aretha looks lovely on the photo but having her laying on a cheap looking red couch wearing cowboy boots with sleazy/cheesy artwork in red and grey on the cover was so beneath her, I think the cover alone hurt record sales.
      I don`t think Atlantic even tried to release any singles from those last two or three albums....
      I have no words for the `You` album cover other than it looks like the picture was taken by the kodak camera when you would press the button to snap the photo and the picture would slide right out.
      But one thing for sure and that is Aretha`s voice is in glorious form on those albums.

    • @MsTexas73
      @MsTexas73 2 года назад +1

      @@christhomas5761 The Hey Now Hey album concept was Aretha and Ken Cunningham’s idea along with the artist’s. It actually makes sense. I give that one a pass. The marketing of the music itself is where I take issue. Atlantic should be ashamed. Those were some great albums. And the Hey Now Hey album really should have been marketed as a double album…one an R&B album, and one a jazz album. It is that good and she had enough studio material from those session to pull it off, and then maybe “Master of Eyes” could have actually been ON the album.

      Yes, and it was disappointing to see it not doing well at the time. Everybody else was having hits, but Aretha seemed to be regarded as a bit of a "has been" then. I remember a friend saying, "singers get old and their voices give out", but there ws nothing wrong with Aretha's voice. The money was in disco, and Donna Summer reigned at the time. It''s no wonder Aretha went label-shopping after 1979.

She felt that Atlantic was not willing to pay the appropriate millions of dollars they are worth! If or when the Franklin family would release the recordings, they're gonna get PAID!!! Especially, if the family releases them independently, without a major record company snatching the bulk of the proceeds!!!

No one(man/woman, Black or White) in the history of American recorded music, has been more versatile or sang in as many genres, as Aretha had! Maybe many singers could sing in as many genres as she did, on stage or while in their showers, and that's a BIG maybe??? But it hasn't been proven on record!

She’s singing on these songs and what really brought me here was a interview that Shirley Jones from “The Jones Girls” did when she said they sung background vocals on this album. The Jones Girls sound really good and I noticed Curtis Mayfield arranged the his background vocals a distinct way bc the “Sparkle” album sounds similar.

    . Two musical greats Curtis Mayfield and Aretha Franklin collaborated on this album but it fell flat. I love Aretha on piano on the song "I'm Your Speed." The title of the song is strange because it's about the soulful love of two beings and Aretha croons and moans about that kiss that's like "hun-nee pooh hun-nee" and you feel the sensuality of this song. I woul have called it Honey Kisses because the lyrics layered with Re-Re's sultry velvet vocals make you feel that kiss and love of that significant one in the song.

      You are right. After "Almighty Fire" Aretha's vocals on subsequent albums, were not so gut-bucket or raw. That wasn't due in any way to vocal decline, when she signed with Arista in 1980, Clive Davis' aim, was to change her brand of Soul. He wanted to make her more Pop oriented. Her albums on Arista demonstrated that her "chops" were still intact, especially, the first two albums. I thought her voice mostly declined during the 1990s. Especially, when she recorded "Honey," in 1994! During this period, many, including myself, thought Aretha's voice was finished. However, when she replaced Pavarotti, singing Nessun Dorma, at the Grammys(1998), her voice was CLEAR, POWERFUL and OUTSTANDING!!! The same when she recorded "In The Morning," in 1998, her voice, especially, the high notes, were regained...LOUD AND PROUD!!! Who would've ever "THUNK" it???!!! Aretha is my absolute, all time favorite singer!

      @@MPardo-cx6jj , During the early 80`s when Aretha worked with Luther Vandross for the Jump to It and Get it Right albums , there were really some gems on there like Just My Daydream , This is for Real, Every Girl Wants My Guy and When You Love Me Like That . She wasn`t singing the gutsy super high notes but it didn`t matter because Aretha is the total singer and has such beautiful vocal tones. She can just do it all...I actually didn`t start getting concerned about the effects of smoking on her voice until her `Through the Storm` album ...but then her voice came back so powerful by the time she recorded Pride, A Deeper Love, Willing to Forgive and It Hurts like Hell. I agree with you about her Nessun Dorma performance and In the Morning though I think How Many Times was a standout vocal from that CD as well.
