- It was a clear blue sky with plenty of sunshine when two P&O Cruise Ships departed from Southampton Cruise Terminals today the 27th May 2018 the 'Ventura' & the 'Britannia'.
The 'Ventura' was the first to depart from the Mayflower Cruise Terminal exactly on time at 17:00pm which makes a very nice change for P&O. As she was approaching and passing town quay she blew her horn towards 'Britannia' which was in the Ocean Cruise Terminal and so the two ships gave a good horn blast at each other. The 'Ventura' then set off for her next cruise which is a 13 day round-trip cruise to Spain, Canary Islands & Portugal. Her first port of call is La Corunna.
After 'Ventura' had passed it was 'Britannia' to depart next just after 18:00pm she gave a good show on her ships horn as she departed the Ocean Cruise Terminal and the Steamship Shieldhall which had just docked alongside 48 berth then joined in with a blast on her steam horn and whistle in reply to 'Britannia' also the Red Falcon Car/Passenger Ferry which was just arriving from Cowes Isle of Wight gave a couple of toots with her horn as she passed town quay behind me.
All was good so I thought as 'Britannia' was leaving as she set off for her next cruise an 8 day round-trip to the Norwegian Fjords, she then suddenly started to reverse back to the cruise terminal the captain then announced that a passenger had been taken ill so a medical emergency was called for & the passenger had to be taken off and an ambulance was called to take the passenger to hospital, as a result of this the 'Britannia' was delayed by about 2 hours and finally got away from Southampton just after 20:00pm. Her first port of call is Stavanger in Norway.
Brittany’s horn sounds like it has a leak
Shieldhall getting involved in the fun
I like these horn battles! Great! Big like. Greetings from Germany to Southampton by Unimedien.
I always like a horn battle between cruise ships as they are departing from Southampton it makes the hairs on your neck stand up a great feeling. Greetings to Germany from Southampton....Steve.
Great video Steve. Not sure I much like the visual appearance of P&O's Britannia. P&O seem to be acquiring some fairly ugly vessels these days, compared to the relatively sleek Arcadia and Oriana. Oh well, a sign of the times I guess. As a kid in the 1960s my Mum and Dad used to take me regularly to Gravesend (about 8 miles from where we lived) to watch the P&O liners (Chusan, Himalaya, Orcades, Arcada etc.) leave for the Australia and the far east from Tilbury, full of '£10 Poms' seeking a new life. It sparked in me a lifelong love of ships. Next trip is on the Queen Vic in July, leaving from the QE2 Terminal.
Many thanks for your comment, P&O Ships do not have any real shape to them at all now not like in the past as you so rightly say and I agree with you totally. The latest P&O Cruise Ship that has just been announced and due to enter service in 2020 is another example of an ugly design and I do not like the new name of "Iona" either. In December of this year we will get a chance to see what the new ship would look like as the "AIDAnova" is the sister ship to the new P&O and this ship is coming to Southampton for a one off visit.
That first P&O cruise ship liiks slanted while docked.
It's just my camera angle nothing to worry about. Thanks for watching.

What is it with Captains and their need to have their Whistles blown at all times?
Macintoshiba It’s part of Maritime Salutes.
Note the red light ship on the dock.
So you're telling me that if you have a button in front of you that blasted a loud horn across the bay to say hello/goodbye to everyone you would not press it? I sure would lol
