    I tried this technique out last time I went to practice at the Club I belong to. It made a wonderful difference! As a woman I find there are so many "experts" wanting to coach you that it can be overwhelming when everyone has their different "tips" to give you. I love being able to practice some basic techniques to help me improve my game. Barry delivers the message in very simple terms that is easy to watch and learn from.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 лет назад +2

      Dayamitra. I find this all the time, people giving well meant but naive advice, it is always a problem for the beginner knowing who to listen to. I am very pleased Selina came to see me, she was in the same position as you, doing her own thing but at the same time listening to that well meant/naive advice. She has made good progress and is now playing for a local team when her employment allows.

      Thank you for your reply!
      Since I wrote to you I have secured a good coach that I'm happy with. I have a lesson with him and then come home and check out your video's for similar practices and to see perhaps the same techniques from a different perspective.
      I am so grateful for this opportunity to play snooker at last after all the years of feeling a little put off around the men! Now I love giving the men something to think about when they play me because I'm not being just a walk over!
      I enjoy watching all you videos and cannot express my gratitude and gratefulness to be able to play this wonderful game! I spent my teenage years (yes, this does age me, ha!) watching the Pot Black series and wishing I could play the game - and now I can and I love it!

    Now this takes it to a whole new level. It's one thing to watch Kyren or Ronnie, or even you practice. You three are so grooved in the stroke, but to watch you work with someone not so advanced is highly enlightening (although she does have a good stroke already). Also seeing the breakdown of the cuing action with helpful reminders along the way is awesome! Can't wait for the next one, but I'm going to watch this one a few (dozen) more times. Thank you very much Barry!

      Karen. To achieve what you have achieved you must have natural ability. In my early days I too was a reasonable player but I knew something was holding me back so I did my research, changed a whole lot of things and my game developed from there. Unfortunately with a family and mortgage, earning a living became my priority so any snooker revolved around coaching.

    I dont know why some players think the way that you hold the cue isnt important and its just a matter of taste. You have to know , its not! Every Instrument wich you use to do something with ( imagine a bow , for playing violin ) you have to obey certain rules and practice on those rules for a long time , only to be able to use that potential wich lies within that instrument ,, taste only comes in play when you are SO good with that instrument that you can step a little bit farther than limits and get away with it. So please fellas , dont understimate the tips wich he pointed out ,, if youre not potting balls as much as you want , the first and most probable thing that is wrong with you , is your stance and your cue holding technic. May the force be with ya'll! 😁

      MH D and Tone. You players share my view, there is only one thing that has got hold of that cue and there is only one thing that delivers that cue and that is the hand holding it, If a player has a problem with his/her game one of the things I will look at is the grip.

      Exactly. To give an analogy, I've been playing guitar for several years and never got a teacher. I'm actually very good, but there are limits that I just can't surmount because my technique is fundamentally flawed in some areas. After too many years, it becomes nearly impossible to change technique. It's so important to make sure that your technique is proper before you've cemented it

    Many weeks back I asked your opinion regarding unusually strong bounces off the rail. I’m relatively new to Snooker. Your response took me by surprise. I’d never have thought static electricity could be a possible cause. I’ve been playing a good amount since then and haven’t come up with any reasonable theory matching yours. Static electricity it is then.

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 лет назад

      Mr B. Don't know if I said it last time but it is a physical impossibility for a ball to bounce off the cushion faster than it hit the cushion unless there is another force at work. The only force I can come up with is static electricity, if someone can prove me wrong I will gladly listen and be educated.

      also if there is cue chalk on the ball and the when the ball hits the rail with the chalk mark in between the rail and ball ... you will notice that the ball bounces back much more than if the ball was clean. You can experiment this quite easily ... take two balls in one hand and bounce them simultaneously on the rail at medium/low speed... they will bounce back together and travel the same distance more or less. NOW, make a chalk mark with the cue chalk on the rail and bounce the same two balls with one hand, one ball must hit the chalk mark on the rail. You will notice that the ball which hits the Chalk mark will bounce unusually stronger off the rail and much further than the ball which did not hit the chalk mark.

    hi ,
    I am enjoying and benifeted your videos too much, thank you.
    I am playing snooker from time to time say twice a week but missing a lot of shots.I am using the club cues is this affecting the play much?, mean do you advice to buy a personal cue and what quality you advice?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 лет назад

      Mohammad. Certainly using club cues is not ideal and it will affect your game and therefore your progress in the game. Please get your own cue but as a beginner it would be advisable to take a more experienced friend with you when you choose. I am afraid you get what you pay for, so although choosing a cue is a personal thing it is also important to go to a reputable dealer. Choose between ash or maple shaft, an ebony butt, three quarter jointed cue or one piece. Make sure it is straight, about 17 to 18 ounces in weight, nicely balanced and no varnish on the shaft.

    Excellent video. When doing the three practice strokes before the delivery stroke, where should you be looking? Would you be watching the cue the whole time, before switching to the object ball during the pause?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  6 лет назад +1

      Greg. Firstly let me say that the three practise strokes have been introduced to groove Selina's muscle action in the correct manner and t demonstrate to her the importance of shot preparation. By no means is it mandatory that a player has to perform three preparatory strokes, everyone is different and prepares to play the shot differently. Coming back to your question, the eyes will flit between, cue, cue ball, and object ball, I don't believe in a set pattern for this, what suits one player may not suit another.

      Arsen. Please check out my early videos which cover where to place the bridge hand and of course where to hold the cue. They cover these points in great detail pictorially much better that I can using words alone.

    Also do you have a video explaining the marks on the cue and how to place them? I know the bridge hand one is 10.5" what about the backhand one do you determine this?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  4 года назад

      fabtas. Where you hold the cue can determine the length of the follow through and control of the cue so it is very important, please have a look at my videos which cover this. Videos number one to ten.

    Hi Barry I have just ordered a cue I've always played cue sports mainly pool from been a kid but never really played serious in the last 12 year.. I was wondering how you set up the fixed points so I can keep some consistency in my cueing or is it how I feel comfortable. My problem is i get down to every shot different and I actually want to start improving now and get to a decent club standard,

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 лет назад +1

      God. Start on the baulk line, place your cue on it then take up your stance and body position taking care not to move the cue off the line while you move the body to the cue. As long as your position conforms to the necessary basics it is largely how you feel comfortable now. Have a look at my videos that show where and how to grip the cue, where to place your bridge hand etc. Now get that cue moving in a nice rhythm and approach every shot in a similar manner which will ultimately establish a pre-shot routine.

    Hi Barry! Watching your videos have helped me tremendously. However after watching this video I realized I have never really thought much about where I hold the cue. Is there any way I can assess this myself? I would love to figure out where exactly to hold it.
    Also one more concern I have is, usually my bridge hand isnt 10 inches away , but a bit shorter (~8 inches). What are your comments on this?

    • @BarryStarkSnookerCoach
      @BarryStarkSnookerCoach  5 лет назад

      Wabi. Firstly the bridge hand is awfully close at 8 inches, taking a measurement from cue tip to where point where the thumb meets the forefinger In recommend between 10 and 11 inches for most shots. Have a good study of my video which shows where to hold the cue and place the bridge hand, this will explain it better that I can with words alone.

      @@BarryStarkSnookerCoach Thanks a lot for the reply and guidance on this regard Barry. I have been trying to rework my stance. I've always had my bridge hand straight. However, now somehow I feel my cue is too short for me. I am 6'0" and have a standard cue. My friend tells me that I am standing too far from the table. Can you tell me how to improve my consistency in stance and sight? I think I am suffering from incosistency in sight the most. When I see well, I can make breaks of 30, but then go without even breaks of 10 for frames at a stretch when I can't see well. Thanks in advance, and sorry if you have covered this already in some previous video.
