Coastal FL suffered ‘massive winds’ and ‘storm surge,’ making Hurricane Idalia ‘devastating’

  • Thousands of people evacuated before Hurricane Idalia hit Florida. Gabe Gutierrez joins Andrea Mitchell from Keaton Beach, FL, where the storm first struck, to discuss the damages to property and the goals for emergency management crews as the storm passes. “In Perry, where I was this morning, obviously there was no storm surge because it was 20 miles inland. The winds were the story there. This part of Florida, Keaton Beach, not only did they get those massive winds, they also got storm surge,” Gabe tells Andrea. “This is different from so many other storms because yes, the small bit of good news: this isn't as much of a populated area as perhaps some other parts of the state. But still, if you live here, this is devastating all the same.”

    Give this some serious consideration.
50 years ago we forgotten Gen-X'rs took incentives to save this planet, upon the advice of the scientists in the 70's. We reduced emissions, banned harmful ozone depleteing chemicals like freon and other CFC's, we fought HARD for filters on smoke stacks ...etc
    We apparently didn't do enough😢.
The oil industry somehow changed the conversation from pollution is bad to climat change isn't happening and a lot of what we fought for was discarded.
Turns out everything we did only bought us a little bit of time.
    Because here we are.
In real time. Watching almost EVERYTHING the environmental scientists said back in the 70's unfold...
It's even come out in recent years that Exxon and Shells scientists knew this and Exxon and Shell spent TRILLIONS to convince us that they're harmless to maintain their ever increasing profits.
Ponder on that for a while.

    • @rockymtnsteeze1815

They will make it political and ignore 99 percent of scientists that actually study the climate. Their political party is telling them it is a hoax. Donald Trump said it was a hoax. People have to make everything one sided. They believe politicians over people that actually study the climate. Most of these people don't even understand the difference between weather and climate. They don't understand rising sea temps causes bad hurricanes. My boomer family members bought land 4 miles from the Gulf Shore. I think it was hit by this hurricane.

Providing disaster relief has always been part of the federal government. That was never debated by anyone. A Republican president has never refused disaster declarations after natural disasters. Disaster planning/response is not. The state and local governments are more suited to the planning and execution of disaster response because they more understand the specific demands of their populations and are better able to organize the local resources. The federal government micromanaging such things would honestly be a complete mess. They don't have the resources for that. The federal government is there for assistance and providing resources during an emergency. But its the state government that runs the operation and has the power. That's just how our system of government is set up.

How do you expect them to retrofit their homes to modern hurricane code? They would essentially need to tear down and rebuild, which is out of reach for most blue collar families.

    • @Elementalism.
      @Elementalism. 9 месяцев назад

      @@pleiadesluciernaga8877 my recommendation?
Demand your family be paid what they are worth.
Seeing how the US is the richest country in the world, surely the workers are worth paying enough to own a home that protects against the local weather? (the main purpose of a home)
Especially considering most other countries in similar climates almost exclusively build stone/brick/concrete homes for their people?
And not only do we have stone/brick/concrete homes here, we are also able to afford massive infrastructure projects that will prevent our worst threats (floods) from even reaching our homes in the first place.
The US as a nation has the means to do so as well, it just lacks the will.

With respect, your comment paints with an extremely broad brush and reads as arrogant. I grew up in Keaton Beach. The people who built those wooden houses you scoff at were humble, blue collar families who had lived there for generations. Building a concrete reinforced fortress was not within their modest budget. They had commercial fishing boats there, worked in industries there, had communities there. They did not live there “because the weather was nice”. Show some empathy and be kind. A great many poor people are suffering tonight without power, and with damaged homes.

Biden and FEMA have been the actual people doing something.

This will age like milk. But let's pretend you're right. Rhonda better not accept a single federal dollar that the US taxpayers pay to save his state. Only Floridians should use their state tax dollars to fix the damage when all is said and done. After all. Florida is supposed to be the best state in the country. Prove it
