  • This video session, Parkinson's NSW specialist Nurse and clinical lead Rachael Mackinnon discusses advanced therapies for Parkinson's including Duodpoa.
Duodopa is a gel that goes through a pump and a tube into your gut (small intestine). In the gel there are two active substances:
    • Levodopa.
    • Carbidopa.
    How Duodopa works
    • In the body, levodopa is made into something called ‘dopamine’. This adds to the dopamine already in your brain and spinal cord. Dopamine helps transfer signals between nerve cells.
    • Too little dopamine causes Parkinson’s disease signs like tremor, feeling stiff, slow movement, and problems keeping your balance.
    • Treatment with levodopa increases the amount of dopamine in your body. This means it reduces these signs.
    • Carbidopa improves the effect of levodopa. It also reduces the side effects of levodopa.

My husband was basically ready for a wheelchair before being placed on the Duodopa pump. He was using 24 tablets plus neupro patches but was still was deteriorating. He has been doing really well until recently when he was admitted to hospital with an infection. The hospital did not know how to deal with the pump so they left it off and he go so far behind the eight ball that he could recover and sadly passed away three weeks ago. The pump gave him roughly ten years of freedom, running, dancing, boxing etc.

I am in Australia. The pump was supplied by the company who makes it I think. The help packs are subsidised by the government. If you are in Australia, ask your neurologist. Not everyone is a candidate for a pump but definitely ask. If you are not in Australia you may have to still ask you specialist to look into it.

So very sorry on the passing of your husband. These advanced treatments may be good options as was the case for your husband.
