  • Looking for new advanced vocabulary for your ASL 3 and 4 students? Religious signs are complex and provide opportunities for academic conversations regarding religious interpreting and the role of ASL in churches. This is Part One of Two Parts of lesson plan ideas and projects for your advanced ASL students. Thank you to my mom, Ginny Patton, who is an extremely talented interpreter and has devoted countless hours of her time to serve alongside her husband, James Patton.

I am not deaf. But I have a passion for ASL. When I was a Girl Scout on the East Coast we all signed. I believe it was a bad back then. But it wasn't just the quick sign, we actually could speak in ASL. It was learned over the years. Do you remember when you were in Elementary School and the teacher would leave the room and they would leave someone in there to tattle on anyone who talked while they were gone? Well I wasn't that person. I was the one on the board with about 50 check marks after my name. But I got smart, I taught my friends to sign. My teacher thought it was funny. Although I enjoyed this video, I do wish there was an interpretation for the woman who was conducting the lecture. I can catch every other sign, but I need to be able to read someone who was signing at a language speed. I am a full time college student, but here in San Diego you can't take a lot of the advanced classes unless it's your major because it's so overwhelmed with people wanting to learn to sign just for whatever reason but not as a career choice or a necessity. But I do appreciate it, and I am subscribed to your channel.

I have been looking for a program that teaches Religious signs and came across this. Thank you. This is fantastic and I am very grateful for your program. I am Deaf and I am right now the only deaf person in my church. But My dream plan is to teach a Deaf Ministry and teach ASL sign for Unity. If you have any other information to how I can access more Religious signs I would really appreciate your help.

    HI Val!
I'm so excited to have found you! I have a question regarding the phrase "you must believe". Would an acceptable expansion be: "you God believe must"? Thanks in advance!

I'm confused, is this for Christian signs or all religious signs? I seem to only see Christian-focused signs, perhaps I missed where they said Christian-focused signs?

Good question? Yes I have a friend who was my special ed teacher in High School and he interprets for me when he can but how do I go about asking the church to provide me an interpreter and do they need to be paid or is it my responsibility to pay for the interpeter> So many classes I would like to take as I am taking a class in metaphysics and struggle without having an interpreter I have some one there who is taking notes for me. What can I do and suggestions?

It would be helpful not to have the words/white rectangle so big. It covers up the signs. You say the word SAVE, but you wrote the word SLAVE. Also, you don't have GRACE as a religious sign.
