Tobor was the first police officer that was killed on duty and rebuilt as a robot. That's why he was called the 8th man because it took 8 tries to get him right.

these are the best versions of the japan anime of the classic b&w episodes of 8TH MAN.

The original story for 8th Man was based on an original story written by Japanese science fiction writer ”Kazumasa Hirai”.
Kazumasa Hirai was the author of the original manga that was published in a magazine for boys, and the cartoonist was Jiro Kuwata, who drew the manga, which was then adapted into this animated TV version.
The original manga was serialized in a children's manga magazine for children in the 1960s in Japan, and the animation was created for children.
But the author was a popular science fiction writer, and the original story was based on a hard science fiction content without cutting any corners, which was suitable for adults and could be appreciated by them.
This is also the reason why 8thMan was so popular in Japan in the 1960s, transcending generations.
This animation was also faithful to Kazumasa Hirai's original story, so it can still be appreciated around the world today.

In the movie 8 Man After, the secretary/girlfriend of the original 8 Man called him Kazumasa, a reference to the Science Fiction writer perhaps?

I was in NE Philly. I was glued to it. It was real drama made at the level of a child's mind. His anguish of being a human in a robot body, unrequited love, remarkable powers, fantastic villains, intrigue and suspense, and each story always had a moral to it. Do not be greedy was the Samantha Seven moral for example.

Yes! UHF Channels 17, 29 and 48 in Philadelphia were the channels that showed martial arts, horror movies like ‘Them’, ‘The Amazing Gigantic Colossal Man’, Astro Boy, Marine Boy, Gigantor, Kimba the White Lion, Prince Planet, 8th Man, Ultra Man - they were great channels!
I also used to watch Doctor Who on the PBS WHYY TV-12
I lived in Northeast Philadelphia, off of Academy Road
