  • Hot Topics and Dressage Hub go hand in hand in the dressage world these days so let's talk about it.
This week we posted a video of Sarah Lockman and First Apple in the CDI -W Grand Prix Dressage test last weekend in California. The ride was grossly overscored with a 71%. In my description of the corrupt judging I provided a short summary of a few of the issues with her grand prix dressage test that would justify that the score was in fact not warranted.
Here is the description: This ride is riddled with mistakes, First Apple is behind the vertical and overbent most of the test and has a blow-up at C for the halt rein back. First Apple has never really had a piaffe and the same problem exists here. I could go on but I think I have made the point.
You can watch that video here: • Sleeping Her Way To Th...
In response to that statement, a fan posted a video of Sarah Lockman training First Apple at home. She stated that he does in fact have a piaffe. After watching the video I realized that we are not looking at the same thing but I did think that it would make for an interesting discussion about the evolution of the Grand Prix dressage horse and when and how the horse evolves from half steps to actual piaffe.
The FEI Definition of piaffe is as follows:
What are you looking for in a good piaffe?
The horse shows balance, regularity, and very well-flexed joints while remaining relaxed and rhythmical
The horse’s legs move in diagonal pairs. Each diagonal pair of legs leaves and returns to the ground alternatively and with cadence and regularity.
The front legs lift until the forearm is horizontal, and the hind leg lifts until the hoof reaches the height of the fetlock joint of the opposite hind leg
    The croup remains lowered
The horse remains in place - travelling forward would be half steps, not piaffe.
We put together a short video of the grand prix dressage test, and the video clip that was sent to use by a fan. We also included a short clip of one of the best piaffes in the world.
So grab your popcorn Karen because this hot topic is about to get heated!
What do you think? Half steps or piaffe?

You are right, he never once stops moving forward and the brief moment he is stationary he lacks the rhythm and height. No not a piaffe not by a long shot.

I think in the first schooling clip, the first few steps were quite nice and correct. Personally, I would prefer to see a rider allow the horse a little forward movement in the sake of maintaining relaxation and rhythm as opposed to cramming them on the spot, making them feel tight and claustrophobic. I think he has nice rhythm, the first schooling clip shows nice lowering of the haunches. In the second schooling clip, I’m not convinced she’s asking for a true piaffe. Looks more like schooling the test pattern in a more relaxed manner and allowing some forward movement. In the show video, he’s obviously more tense and it’s not so good. In that situation, I too would elect to allow forward movement over risking an explosion because he felt stuck and possibly ruining the rest of the test. I wouldn’t say he “doesn’t have” a piaffe, I would however say that it is not perfect and he could improve, which I suspect she is working on.

It's become a huge trend to jam down on the front legs in "piaffe" and cause the hindquarters to bounce in order to get more lift from the back legs. This rider demonstrates that perfectly. The horse is so on the forehand it can't hold a rhythm, and struggles to get the front legs high enough before they have to prematurely come down to support the shifting of the weight since the front to back balance is incorrect. Piaffe is the last step before training levade, it's a move that is supposed to demonstrate the absolute most collected and elevated in the front that the horse can be before the front legs are both fully off the ground (levade, from the French root word "lève" which is the verb "to lift"). Every step closer to collection from extension should bring the horse's balance farther and farther back to the hindquarters, and this is the polar opposite

Yes definitely half steps from what I know.... quick question though, aren't you allowed to move 2 to 3 meters forward? Or is that in lower levels?
I am moving up to Jouniors Avanced so don't know what is required in the BIG LEVELS!!!

@@DressageHub are you sure about that? Because it used to be 1m, but I think it changed to max 2 meters. (For 12-15 steps)
But you can definitely move 0.5m and still deserve at least a 7. So no movement forward is not the case.

    • @DressageHub

The intermediare 2 test allows for 1m of movement forward. I do not see an allowance anywhere on the GP test.

Half steps. Even if you pencil whip it trying to extend a 1m allowance, it exceeds. Beautiful horse.

    Nice discussion.
I agree horse is moving forward in his training. Its all a learning curve, isnt it? The pressures to perform perfectly is.... severe. Leads to seeing some strange stuff, and some bad stuff out there at times, add in to that the rather large expense of competing at high levels? We ask alot of our leading riders & their horses, maybe too much.
I saw no abuse in the video and that alone makes me happy.
I cld easily forgive a higher score w an imperfect routine? As opposed to higher scores achieved thru abusive techniques ;)

Half steps for sure. Barely any engagement in the hindquarters to lift those hind legs (meaning the horse doesn’t collect its body enough, lower its hindquarters and use its core muscles to ‘stomp’ with all four hooves). The horse appears to be prancing in place instead of actually doing a piaffe.

  • @equestanton1017

This horse does not have a piaffe but then nor do 98% of horses in Grand Prix competitions today have a piaffe. Scoring of piaffe even at international level GP is an utter traversty. Considering what scores top riders recieve for piaffe on average and the quality of that piaffe we have no choice but to conclude this is sanctioned animal abuse , a horrible stain on our sport. So much so this force and over use of spurs has become to be seen as normal even though it is plain for all to see that beyond the very very tiny percentage of true piaffe there is none, plain and simple. We can truly feel ashamed that this is still the order of the day. I suggest piaffe be removed form tests entirely as this blatant abuse is unfair on the majority of horses competing in dressage today.

No piaffe. Just bends the knees in front. No rhythm , sequence of steps, regularity or. balance.

It is half steps, theres too much forward for it to be piaffe. Its in development. The half steps are very beautiful though, and is twice as good as some other horses 'piaffe'.

Is this your voice @DressageHub? I really liked this explanation! And i also agree that horse is not even ready for higher level shows in dressage, it needs more training and also don't deserved more than 65% points. The horse lacks of movements. If this is a new series of you explaning the dressage world i vote YES.😍

Awe that's really sweet of you. I have mostly stayed out of the world of explaining and teaching because I am an amateur and the internet loves to hate even though I have accomplished a lot including training 2 horses from baby to gp. I appreciate this feedback. It's good to hear because I would definitely be open to doing more of these types of explanations in the future.

Every horse has a piaffe, they may not yet know how to. 😉
But I actually think this is a decent start. The one in the test was very very very forward. Imo far from sufficient. But a piaffe needs a forward tendency, so I would prefer this.
Personally I have a different definition of ‘half steps’ (I know it as Halbe tritte), so I would call this a piaffe in the making.

So you think Dalera has no Piaffe? The video was from her freestyle. In the piaffe before the piaffe- pirouette she has a bit more forward tendency, yes. You need that sometimes to prevent backsteps in the pirouette. As an Olympic gold medalist Dalera definitely can do good piaffes!
