You're absolutely right about sniping with a zoom lens. I came back from a trip where I decided to use a super zoom (I'm an amateur with an APS-C camera) to not switch lenses and carry less gear. But I found that when I came back and reviewed all my pics, I zoomed in too much, very little interest in the angles I chose. So I sold it and put a 35mm in my bag and a 17-50. Had much more interesting pictures after that switch.
I swear you post the most convenient videos... I'm upgrading to a new body and I've been trying to figure out what kinda lens I'm gonna purchase next and it was between a 28-75 and a fixed 85 and these 2 videos you recently posted helped me out so much haha killin it
This is great advice matti! We tend to spend so much time and attention on cameras but lenses can have more of an impact on your filming and photography than we give it credit for.
You made the point about primes and how you are forced to move to capture the shot you desire, and I have to back that statement 100%. I personally use the Rokinon 35mm 1.5 and I love it. Allows me to really stretch for creativity and I've found that I get more interesting shots that way. BUT, they both do have their perks and we use both. It is a preference game for sure. Great video!
Really well said Matti. I tend to film mostly on a 24-120 equivalent... great I.S., range, and lots of compression / bokeh on tight details shots at 120mm (that look like prime shots), so I totally agree... when you need to get a lot out of a short amount of time, grab the zoom 👍

I'm a Sony APS-C user. The 18-105 f4 as a zoom for everyday usage is a good choice. The 35 or 50 f1.8 for low light is a great supplement.
Man I just got the Sigma 18-35 for my Canon m50 after hearing you talk about it so much on your channel. Was a bit of a risk cause I couldn't try it first but it is freaking magic. Like how did they even make a lens that good?! Better than some L series lenses I've used!
Actually got a 28-75mm Tamron 2.8 the other day. And I really love it, I could get a really nice wide shoot then go in for a narrow shot. I shoot film also
Matti, I really like the direction your taking right now. Your video are more fresh, lively. The vlog style fits you really well. I hope you will continue in that path. CheerS.

Absolutely love this video. I find that the zoom lens allows me to be more creative. I don’t have to worry about carrying multiple lenses when climbing a tree to get the best angle for a seen.💯🔥👍🏾 you are definitely a legend!!!
I was literally just making a RUclips video on this. No joke was just finishing the edit. I have the 1DX MII (LOVE THIS CAMERA) with 70-200 MIII, 24MM F1.4, 16-35 MII and 50MM F1.2:) Great video! Would love to visit Toronto and collaborate! Omar
16-35F2.8 is my most used lens too. I totally agree with you that it is best to use Prime lens only, if you are a beginner in photography. Bring out just one focal lens at a time. For example taking with 35mm only for a few weeks, then take 50mm for few weeks, finally take that 85mm. The 24mm is a bit too expensive for beginner. Train yourself to visually the scene for the lens you have mounted, before you bring the camera to your eye.
I got my first prime a 35mm f1.8 for my crop sensor, not long after I got the sigma 18-35 and it's completely replaced my prime and I use it 99 percent of the time
I shoot for 13 years, tons of weddings.... and I am definitely zoom shooter. I do have great quality zoom lenses. I have few primes but I don't use them for the reason of not being versatile just like you say... I need to be able to zoom whenever, always be ready and those primes don't get me that. If I shoot fashion shoot with a model, then I have the luxury to use primes... great video... careful on that one wheel.
The third lense I ever bought was a Canon 16-35mm (after 50mm and 100mm macro) Back then I didn't know I would start vlogging and I bought the f.4 and I regret I didn't get the f 2.8. But at least it is stabalized...
I shoot product videos almost daily. Using my Sigma 18-35 ART 1.8... I'm actually really sorry I got it. I can get some really nice shots, with amazing bokeh, but getting the whole object in focus is always challenging, since that Sigma has such a narrow depth of field. Zooms FTW. Great channel btw, keep up the amazing work!
I use the 18-105 F4 on my a6500 like 90% of the time; on my gimbal 100% of the time, no out of balance at all either way of the zoom. Only downside is it's only F4 but at least all the way.

Yeah, about that “buy used lenses” - I bought a used Canon 24-70 f2.8L mark I - two days later I was getting an lens-to-body connection error every time I wanted to change the aperture from 2.8 - the repair was around $400. Not sure I’ll take the risk again ;)
I've got the 16-35L. It's a monster. But if you think it's the perfect vlogging lens, you're mistaken. It's actually the Panasonic 7-14mm. Now that lens is much much much smaller and is much sharper. Combined with the G9 or the GH5 and that flippy screen? You have the perfect solution. 4K60p for cheaps too!
I really like that word "work harder get some extra Money" when i start vlogging my self. i thought, 1lens is enough to do the job. So the store where i buy my canon80D suggest tamron 16-200 which i realized its not fit when i vlog.
I shoot prime when I’m studio. Most zooms don’t go lower than 2.8 full frame. 16-35, everytime!! It's the lens I always reach for, the first in the bag (when it's not living life on the camera). We use the F/4 with IS, but only because of the IS. I would much prefer having the f/2.8 for more options. love the video Matti :)

A lot of these zooms can be had for pretty cheap used or with older versions. For example on eBay I routinely see the 70-200 L and the 24-70 L (both mark I) go for around $600. You can also use the third-party glass from Tamron, which is likely just as good and has IS.
My Sigma 18-35 was the biggest impulse buy I've made...but I am so thankful for it! Best gear investment in a long time...just wondering...when will Sigma update it...been 4 years you know. Let me know your thoughts man! Keep up the good work

I was debating on getting the sigma 18-35 for some time now. After seeing this and how much you love it, it's a done deal!
In my experience, zooms do NOT work on steadycams/gimbals because every time you zoom in or out, it changes the weight distribution of the rig, yes?
Use a lock?
Not always true prime lenses are better in low light at 1.4 and 1.8 and prime lenses are sharper for pictures weddings and portraits
