You're absolutely right about sniping with a zoom lens. I came back from a trip where I decided to use a super zoom (I'm an amateur with an APS-C camera) to not switch lenses and carry less gear. But I found that when I came back and reviewed all my pics, I zoomed in too much, very little interest in the angles I chose. So I sold it and put a 35mm in my bag and a 17-50. Had much more interesting pictures after that switch.

You made the point about primes and how you are forced to move to capture the shot you desire, and I have to back that statement 100%. I personally use the Rokinon 35mm 1.5 and I love it. Great video!

Really well said Matti. I tend to film mostly on a 24-120 equivalent... great I.S., range, and lots of compression / bokeh on tight details shots at 120mm (that look like prime shots), so I totally agree... when you need to get a lot out of a short amount of time, grab the zoom 👍

16-35F2.8 is my most used lens too.
I totally agree with you that it is best to use Prime lens only, if you are a beginner in photography.
Bring out just one focal lens at a time. For example taking with 35mm only for a few weeks, then take 50mm for few weeks, finally take that 85mm. The 24mm is a bit too expensive for beginner.
Train yourself to visually the scene for the lens you have mounted, before you bring the camera to your eye.

When shooting products or food you need a lower aperture IMO. you can shoot portraits with zooms but I prefer a prime 85 or 105 1.4/1.8.... guess it just depends on what you’re shooting and what you’re comfortable with. I like this idea for on the fly work. I'm glad you discussed the prime and the different looks you get with different lenses. For filmmaking using the lens that gets the look and message across is important, and yes it does take time. Love your show! you are very through and know your stuff, and be careful on that rolling device!

What really annoys me is that there is not a single fast lens equivalent do a 16-35 for APS-C. The best is the tokina 11-20 f/2.8. I ended up getting the 10-18mm for vlogging with the 80D because it has IS. Next camera will be the EOS R! Keep up with those great videos. I would like to see a video on Variable ND filters. Thanks!

A lot of these zooms can be had for pretty cheap used or with older versions. For example on eBay I routinely see the 70-200 L and the 24-70 L (both mark I) go for around $600. You can also use the third-party glass from Tamron, which is likely just as good and has IS.

My Sigma 18-35 1.8 Art lens is getting repaired now and I’ve been missing it SO much since I shipped it to Sigma. Never thought about how much I shot with it until it was gone! 😭

You should take a poll and see if your audience has full frame sensors or crop. Someone with a crop sensor that takes the advice of these videos will be quite sad when their new 24mm lens isn't actually wide at all on their crop sensor.
