Haha, ya, Singaporeans got this unique skill to Code Switch aka talk Singlish with fellow Singaporeans but switch to more proper English when speaking with foreigners especially English native speakers. Don't know how we acquire this skill. I think it is probably a subconscious thing because we know we live in a metropolitan and multi cultural society and we are more mindful about such sensitivities.
Many Singaporeans can switch registers depending on who we’re talking with: proper English for business, education and official contexts; and casual Singlish in the hawker centre/market or with close friends.
Younger generation of Singaporeans generally can code-switch - Normal English for non-locals, and speed-talking Singlish among locals. Singlish, as you have noted, drops unnecessary words. Hence many foreigners say we speak "really fast". No we don't. We compress speech... our sentences are like zipped files. Among ourselves we speak in ZIP-ped sentences. When we talk to foreigners we unpack the ZIP file and use every word 🤣😂. Hence normal English is "slower", cuz slowed down by "the", "a", "are" etc Pretty useless words in Singlish. (Wow it's so hot, I need a shower to cool down -> Wah so hot, must bathe ... same meaning to a local). Guessing where you're from - Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Slovakia or a Baltic state.
Singapore is a country that focuses on making life good for the majority, such as ensuring law and order, efficient amenities, and a clean environment. I think sensible people will find Singapore a very good place to visit or live. But it has challenges like a lack of work life balance for most people, a very competitive job market and a very high pressure education system. So, for most non-Singaporeans, it's better to visit than to work in Singapore. I've experienced what I'm talking about.
I like to describe Singlish as an ultra-efficient, almost like speaking English in shorthand... removing any unnecessary words, choosing words with the least syllabus from ANY language (Chinese/Malay/English) and mix them all in =>> Singlish. People unfamiliar might have thought its because we're poorly educated and can't speak English..only to be surprised we can 'switch' to proper English anytime. :) but sorry, we're just lazy 90% of the time....so Singlish.
Because in Singapore we have many food choices in easy reach. Unlike in bigger countries you need to travel some distance for food so you might get lazy to go.

Haha. Max. I like how u talk about our funny habits. Hv u also noticed how Singaporeans can switch speaking English, Singlish , Dialects, Mandarin all in one conversation? Haha we r gifted.
Yes in Singapore is all about food , when I go to a foreign country I enjoy their food , but it seen that is almost the same food u see everyday, but once I got back , I go to my hawker center and eat at least 2 dish for a meal time , there is more variety food selection in Singapore. I don't understand why American like to put carpet in their entire house, yes is cosy, but the amount of dirt and bacteria is so disgusting, especially when they wear their shoe into the house ! We local like to make thing short , that is why singlish is use 😂,but don't worry we can auto switch when we see a foreigner… haha . Traffic is terrible in the state, especially during peak hour in the morning , their highway become "low-way" , u can stuck for 2 hour in the traffic if u going to work/home , road rage is real.
Bro...children can't move out of the mom & dad's homes in Singapore cos it's way too expensive to live on their own. Imagine if every kid in every family doing that - housing becomes super high demand & home prices will shoot up considerably! In the US homes are aplenty. Land is aplenty. So the difference is stark on this front. But...having said that, my kids are still living with me here in the US. Cos I want them to & at the same time don't want them to - move out, that is...
A bit more background context on American cultural norms. One reason for we may not take shoes off right at the front door is that Americans generally never walk barefoot around the house. So a lot of times we do walk into the house with shoes but usually we switch to house shoes or just wear socks. It would be kinda gross to walk around barefoot otherwise. And too cold. In tropical climates like Singapore, it would be too hot to wear shoes or socks indoors so people go barefoot. In US, people small-talk about sports, usually football (not soccer), baseball, basketball - whichever is in season. We do share tips for good restaurants but its very expensive to eat out. A regular meal with 2 dishes, rice and tea at a non-fancy "cheap" Chinese restaurant will cost you minimum US$50 with tips. Italian/Western cuisine dinners will easily run US$80-100 for a family of 4. CA is full of "immigrants" from other US states. Locals are actually kinda rare. Contrary to popular belief, we rarely talk about the weather - at least not in CA since it's always the same mild weather unless there is an earthquake or forest fires. We have to drive everywhere because there's not a viable public transport option. If there was one, we'd take it. Caltrain in Northern California - although it's nothing like the MRTs is very well patronized (pre-Covid) by Silicon Valley workers. Gas/petrol is also much cheaper in the US. In cities like San Francisco or New York, a lot of people don't have cars since it's a hassle to get parking or even drive around. Public transportation is easier. Or walking. Kids leave the family home when they move to college and they often end up working far away from home. It's also probably cheaper to rent in the US although with prices going up, there's been an increasing trend of boomerang kids. Marijuana is legal now in some states like in California but honestly, you don't see people hanging around smoking it or coming in to work or school high. There's no difference from when it was illegal because back then, if you really wanted it, it was easy to get. Nothings really changed except maybe it's cheaper now. While it's not common to see extended families in the same house, it's not true that Americans don't care for their parents or grandparents. There is however, no expectation from parents that their children are obliged to take care of them financially in their old age. Older people here are usually plan for retirement and they expect also that their kids will work and be independent. I actually think it's more healthy and there's not this heavy guilt trip placed on kids "I sacrificed my whole life for you so you now must return the favor for me in my old age". It should be a natural thing you want to do to help your kids out if they need it or vice versa. Most families do have an expectation to come together during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
For the traffic, we didnt have to look too far, just look at Jakarta and Bangkok. Lol But yeah, i do realised a lot of western thinks its strange for us to stay with parents. On the other hand, i was wondering why they dun care for their seniors. I got married, got my own place and invited my parents over. Easier for me to care for their medical needs especially now that they r in their 70s.

00:30 why skipping? Mainly because they speak English the way they speak Mandarin, just converting the Chinese word into English. So you see, basically it's broken English and a lot of grammatical errors, you can hear it especially from uncles and aunties. And because of multi race and not everyone is studying hard in English 😉, that's why. It's also similar in Malaysia.
Interesting video, I am married to an American and I am a Singaporean currently residing in the USA. My husband loves all of my food that i've made for him, if it's not spicy he's not amused! It has been a while since I can speak Singlish to anyone here, when I first got to the States, I find it hard to understand them but 14 years in, it's all good. We have 4 kids together and I am teaching some Singlish to them and some of my native language. I don't think the Americans can do well in Singapore because it's too strict for their liking, the right to bear arms in none existence and you can't protest about anything back home, lol.
