- I've had this Lifestraw Universal for about 10 months, I got to use it a couple times before is stopped working all together. Lifestraw customer support offered a solution, so let's see if it worked.

Awesome review, glad the tips worked for you.
Thank you! Seems to be working, we'll see how it does in the future.
Oh no! Happy that they replied! You would need a pitcher for that. Bleach!!!! Sweet. Glad that is worked. Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad they replied too lol The coffee can worked but not recommended,
I like the concept behind this whole system... Seems like they still
have a few bugs to work out in the design. Thanks for sharing Mr. Z!
Yeah, I love the concept, easy water filtration on the go.... other companies have better solutions I think though,
Thanks for the video and the heads up.
Hopefully this helps out some who come across the same issue.
Interesting that worked. I've never been a life straw fan (too heavy for what I do) but I love the design implementation. :)
I don't mind a little extra weight for clean water, but a lighter more reliable option would be fantastic.
But... When did you put the carbon filter back? Mine is not working too... I'll try this out
I put the carbon filter back after rinsing the bleach out of the filter. This filter never really worked again after this and I've talked to a lot of people who have had the same (or worse) issues with them. My recommendation would be to toss it in the garbage and pick up a Sawyer or Katadyn BeFree.
Goes to show that it’s always imperative to test your filters and make sure they’re flowing before you head out (I never did before either). Whether it be a Life Straw. A Sawyer or any of the other options out there. You wouldn’t really think to do it since it was flowing great on the last trip you took but this is the stuff that happens. Live and learn. We get better at this shit with every trip
I test my Sawyer now before each trip, but never thought of testing the Lifestraw until now. Luckily I had it with me for convenience and wasn't relying on it, I had my Sawyer in the pack for camp filtering. Still it was a nuisance.
Interesting vlog, we purchased a Lifestraw not too long ago and it works ok, will definitely take on board your advice 😀👍
Thank you! The Lifestraw is great when it works, not really an all around filter but good for on the go needs.
I got one, first one I got and it just didn’t work, got Subscription box and two different ones arrived the flex and the peak.
The universal doesn’t work at all, The Flex sorta works and the peak is still in its box cause I really don’t have any faith in them.
I have an aquamira, a sawyer squeeze and a platypus gravity works and those last two work great.
In going to try this soak method and see if it works for me.
Don't get your hopes up, I just wound up tossing it in the garbage. I have one friend who used a Lifestraw while traveling and it was a life saver due to water quality but I have the feeling what we get here in the USA is not their best product. My goto is always Sawyer I've have a couple minis, a squeeze and a micro and they all have been great, AquaMira is my backup.
Lol I can’t BBB here to tell you it worked! But yeah considering 2 of those life straws didn’t work I can see issues coming down the road.
My sawyer & platypus haven’t failed new yet though. 😅
Great video today my friend. Have a fantastic day!
Thank you! - ps sorry for the extremely late reply, I never even saw some of these pop up.
Wath a idiotic sugestion! Wasen't bleetch one of the product that the straw was filter away!?
I think so, but that's what their customer support told me to do. I've also heard they've told people to use vinegar too. I went to look on the Lifestraw website but it appears they finally stopped selling these things after years of complaints.
Any updates?
Haven't used it all winter. I don't like to carry filters if they can freeze, I'll update now that the weather is getting warmer again.
I just bought a brand new Lifestraw universal, I think its very hard to drink from( suck water out ), almost no flow. im a doing some thing wrong ? I create a lot of vacuum trying to drink from it, because when i open the lid it almost sounds like if im opening a can of soda !
its the same bottle I use as shown in the vid
I only ever got mine to work twice. After the "fix" they gave me it stopped working again almost immediately. I've talked to others that have had them not work like you're describing right out of the box. I can't recommend these to anyone. If you like the filter in a bottle design check out the BeFree system or if you want the, in my opinion, best filter out there get anything made by Sawyer.
@@KurtZitzelman I will def. check the others ones out that you mentioned.
and the strange thing is, that I don't use for out door stuff so chance are 0% that the filter is full off debris and ofc that its brand new 🤷♂ I live in asia so I use for tap water only, to make it drinkable. and it works you can taste the diff, with or without chemicals. but the flow system as mentioned, sucks big time, its sad.
We talked about using similar setups before and how much we like them. I have the Life Straw Go which is basically their bottle with a flip up sippy spout and an almost identical filter. They’re just light blue. I had the same issue. I took the filter off and just filled the bottle with water from my Be Free. I’ve also heard of people having the same issues with Sawyer squeezes’. Some people say it has to do with the amount of time they sit between trips. Other people have said it has to do with tap water and all the crap that’s in our public water supply. I don’t know.
My Sawyer had a similar issue back in the beginning of the year and that was due to sitting for too long. The Sawyer was easier to get going again because you can get more water pressure from the bag than from sipping through the Lifestraw. Bleach must loosen up the fibers or something.
Another video says to use coconut milk for 30 minutes and it worked. My mom is having this problem so I am not sure what to tell her. 😂
Coconut milk? I don't know about that, maybe it would work. I just don't think a filter should need that much maintenance just to keep flowing. Year in and year out my Sawyer Mini just keeps on going with not much more than a back flush every now and then. I'm amazed that after 5 years of this same issue from multiple people, LifeStraw still hasn't fixed the issue or just yanked this product from their lineup.
Mine is brand new, and water is not flowing at all. Disappointing.
Aw man, that sucks. Hopefully you can get a refund. I'm baffled by LifeStraw, some people have nothing but great things to say about them but my experience has been the opposite.
You should have just used your water bottle to soak the filter in bleach instead of the coffee can
That makes a lot of sense, but I'm pretty sure I was using my nalgen at work.
