How to make your own bird cage or mini aviary

- *update 2016... I do NOT condone keeping cages birds, these little guys are rescues and have free range of a large area outside of the cage. I made this video over 5 years ago and the same guess are still happy with their home. With rescue caged birds you can't just release into the wild as they would not know how to survive. However I have tried to make their life as fun as possible**
Not my usual type of video but I have been looking for a large bird house for a while now for my 2 rescue canaries. I dont like the word 'cage' too much, but these little guys need a nice spacious home to live in. I figured it was just easier to make one myself to the exact size I wanted.
I am not a builder and only had VERY basic tools! Its not perfect but Im happy with it. The birdhouse now has a bath and a lot more different sized perches to exercise their feet and a different lock for the door.
I forgot to mention in the video- but make sure to WASH the entire thing thoroughly before introducing your birds into the cage. The wire mesh needs to be washed very well and make sure your birds nails are trimmed regularly. Хобби
This is so well done and explained that I know I must do so much better. If I was young and saw this I would be hooked which I am anyway but this with the video to go with is exceptional and very professional. Richard from Australia
Wow, excellent, I love the way you did that. Youhave indeed inspired me, I want two, one for my finches and one for my budgies.
Beautiful job, love the drawer, ingenious,
thank you
Looks great and the birds look very happy!
Inspired!!
Happy New Year Anna :) Your video was wonderful. I have our Cockatiel living alone in a big parrot cage that's on wheels and can be moved outside when our weather (Reno, Nevada) is much warmer. However, your idea for adding the cast off vinyl to the sides IS something I hadn't thought of and will definitely utilize to reduce the mess in our family room :) -Dawn
Thats very nice I wan to make one for my Budgies. Your birds look so happy to have lots of room to play.
Good job! Congratulations to you. I know that you like it and your birdies love it! I made one for my cockatiels with s chrome commericial shelving unit taken from my garage. Covered it with wire on both large sides, then made 2 frames from window screen frame material & covered those with the wire mesh. They simplly hang on each end with little hooks to be easy on and off and serve as doors for access. It is on wheels and the cage area is 4 feet high by just under 2 feet wide and 6 feet long with a shelf underneath for food, toys etc. I have a light for the top which is still temporary for now. They love it! I still need to do the light, make a metal drawer for the bottom(now is cardboard.), make some scatter guards for the sides and some other little bits.
You did a wonderful job! I am building a cage for my mother's wedding gift (she loves zebra finches) and have watched about ten videos. Your's is my favorite :)
I love it, I am going to build one for my birds :)
I love this helpful video! Love the music too! Gonna get started tomorrow! TY!
Love your creative build. Don't freak out about the mesh, there are millions of aviaries and cages made with it.
make sure everyone knows to use STAINLESS STEEL or other bird safe metals!! I hate to hear of birds dying because of homemade cages
do you happen to know if paint is safe to birds?
@@emily-co2lj What kind of paint?
@@frainium8644 acrylic
@@emily-co2lj Rust-Oleum is safe most of their products are zinc free.
what about normal steel people say its safe but idk whats your opion
so cool man
at 1st I don't know how to make the door
but now I CAN !!!
THanks for sharing this clip !
Absolutely fantastic. You've given me some fab ideas for my bunny hutch. Thanks for the inspiation!
Great video. Just what I needed. I'll try something like this for my canary. Thanks!
great video, and the result looks really nice! thank you for sharing
Great tutorial! I'm inspired
I'm going to build one but I'm going to attempt to use an old oak tall Tv cabinet. thanks for your video
Very impressive cage you have built there. I'm gonna built one like that, but much bigger for my peach face love birds...Keep up with the great built, you inspired me a whole lot and I thank you for your great ideas..
VERY nicely constructed and well filmed in addition. Good job all round.

@11sweetdixie yes definately the wire should be thoroughly washed to get rid of any coating. I have added an extra attachment for a luxury bird bathing area and they also now have an outdoor section to sit outside the cage. They are great!
My conure love his new cage!!! I made it really big....thank you for showing us your idea, we love it!!!❤
Thanks for the tips! Very functional and something I think i'd like to do for an outside aviary! :)
you made it look easy, thankyou
Good illustration !
Beautiful aviary
After 15 years flying free thru my 3 story home, my 6 parakeets are going into a cage I'm building today 9/21/12 identical to yours. I will post it here afterwards. Of all in youtube, yours is the most simple one. The wire will be like yours 1/2". I just came back from Home Depot with the wire and peaces of wood. I'm debating wheter to use dovetail, tenon and mortise, or just plain screws! I think being saturday today I'll go the easy way, screws and nice finish. Thanks for the video!
Very good Anna, will try to build one too for my canarie :)
You did and awesome job!!!! I love your bunny too :)
great video! Gonna build this for my first two budgies :)
What a great job!
awesome job, thanks for the inspiration, about to make my own birdcage
show me 6 years later
Wow! You're a very talented woman! I came here after watching your Aqua golden mermaid eye makeup vid! Awesome... also.... I love your accent.
"hi" from New Zealand :oD
Brilliant! Thank you for the idea...My grandmother is raising Zebra finches and I think this would be perfect...as for as the zinc in the galvanized screen I think it is alright for small birds who don't use their beaks to climb.
You've done a great job at this! Awesome!
Hi Fantastic Video , i am building a walk in aviary and going to plant trees in it as i have done before, keep up the great videos.
Take care
great video, inspires me a lot thank you
I would like to point out to you and to everyone to please DO NOT use galvanized metal mesh!! This metal is poisonous to animals!!!!
Your design is fabulous but stainless steel should be the ONLY metal used around animals.
My family learned this the hard way with a homemade cage like this one with galvanized metal mesh that caused the death of our iguana and ferret... 😢💔
I researched soon after and found the cause was the galvanized mesh....
Just becaise its toxic to those animals doesnt mean it won't be toxic to birds
+Life of hunny The cockatiel its poisonous to birds as well
Then what should I use for the cage if I can't use the galvanized metal mesh
Stainless steel mesh
Birds are so delicate, you really need to do research on the materials you're going to use.
Might be more expensive, but it's a must!
thanks for the great vid, definitely going to help me. especially with the tray, you gave me some good ideas:) cant wait to get started
Thank you so much for this! I will be getting a sugar glider, and I didn't want to get a cage that is meant for one because they are WAY to much $. And by doing this, it will give them a lot of room to glide, and they will be really happy in their big home!! :D
awesome job do you have any tips on what to use to clean the cage im sure organic is probly best my husband and i are wanting to get a love bird and we need all the tips about birds because this is new to us thankyou
Great job! I am going attempt to make two for my African Grey Parrot and Amazon. I hate their cages. I would rather them in a nice birdie "home" like this! I am truly inspired!
Very neat idea
It was inspireing! Thanks alot for the effort.
Just Great Video...Thank You for sharing it with us...:-)
Anna, after 3 hard weekends of work (1 saturday each) I finally finished my bird cage last night at 8 pm! We placed it in the living room and now we are waiting for the six parakeets to come in by themselves, many years ago when I had another small cage they use to come in at night time, and get out in the a.m. we already removed their little jungle where they slept and last night all slept in the chandalier lamp :). I'll post a movie tonight!
Very nice. I plan to build mine out of 2'x4' plywood with 23 gage wire mesh I will nail to the front. I will put a mesh panel on the bottom and have some small boards prop the floor wire panel and put a ceiling panel under it. I will put a LED light on top and a heater on bottom. I plan to keep some zebra finches. I have 4 already. I raised them and plan to buy more and breed them. I plan to buy baskets and breed as many as I can. I really liked your video. It gave me many ideas.
You did a super job. I want to make me one
Great stuff, AnnaJahan!
Great job , thanks for posting
Great job on the avairy.
Good info, thanks. By the way nice hands.
Amazing! Inspired!
Awww I love the bunny is it yours and this is really smart and it's a cheap way to make a cage for your bird thanks so much
sandj clay
Awesome job
Nice video..I like this...
Thanks and Recommended for all
Beautiful
Galvanized wire can be treated with white vinegar and salt and a wire brush and, weathered for 3 month. Use only GAW, " galvanized after weld" for outdoor aviaries. Powered coated wire is another option. Stainless is the only guaranteed safe metal which doesn't rust but very very expensive. The danger is for hookblls birds not straightbills like canaries, finches ect.
@RyCom123 no problem! Would love to see yours when its built so please make a video when you do!
Beautiful !!! I love it!!;) I wish you could build one for my doves!;)
I'mma show this to my friend and see if we can do somethin similar. :) I wanna get a budgie/parakeet.
please If you do don't use wood paint or galvanized mesh it is toxic for birds
Super like, just awesome. Vey nice presentation. Really help full for ppl like me who want to have a home for there birds in there own desired size. ;)
You did a great job..:)
i just wanna know how you fix the cloture to the wood
Very nice bird cage :)
wow beautiful job you are brilliant =)
Hearing loss has been observed in animals exposed to very high concentrations of styrene. Animal studies have shown that inhalation of styrene can result in changes in the lining of the nose and damage to the liver. However, animals may be more sensitive than humans to the nose and liver effects.
I'm actually looking at building something very similar i like the simple idea & design.
Good Job
very nice regards from ireland
Very nice anna thank you very much
I don't understand how u made the door! pls explain more D: wanna make a big cage for my baby budgies
+Nurin Izzati Ye staple a wood frame on one of the mesh parts, then cut off the mesh on the inside. Ye make a door, making sure to measure the inside of the little frame on the mesh wall for your door length and width. Get some inexpensive hinges, screw em on the door, and the other side to the wood frame opening in the bird cage mesh wall. I figured that much out myself.
Wow I cant believe you made it all by yourself. Perhaps the bunny rabbit was a carpenter in his previous life ;-)
I sometimes think I should be able to make something out of wood, but Ive never plucked up the courage to actually try. I think you picked a great project as aviaries etc can be quite expensive and its not too complicated. Great results
Change the polystyrene, because the Canaries will very soon be very free birds. And a tip about pant, as long as it is waterbased, it is just fine. And was the wire with a washing up liqud, and then paint it with black paint. Parrots, and other parrot like birds are a bit too happy to chew/gnaw at everything around, so using stainless steel is a good idea, IF available. So use your brains as well, actually a tad more important than a soft heart!
super cute!!!
Thanks for the video.
best desing
Wow!! Awesome!!
For the door frame, how is it held? Just stapled to the wire? Really nice! Cant wait to make one now
Can budgies chew through the wood, I have 6 and one of the females chews alot and has broke two perches? It tooks her a couple months to chew through the perch. The current cage is big with alot of toys but I plan to have a outside aviary. Is this possible with wood?
wow this is a really inspiring cage and me and my mum love it but we were looking for making an aviary for our birds but we were conserned about the door and if the birds would fly away if we opened it? so we werent sure wether it matters as long as we are cafreful or we should reconsider the design for the cage. any ideas or advise is welcome
whats the total cost to me make it any idea
Does anyone know where I can get stainless steel mesh? All I can find is galvanized which is a big no. Thank you!
Very nice
Great effort ;)
Hi i could tell you live in England by your accent, and you probably know how cold it gets there. Im planning to make a big budgie cage outside too but wanna know how you are planning to keep the budgies warm outside.
Whats with the bunny.....LOLZ Its cute.... Great cage too
very nice
How do I fix the net not being tight enugh and the porches wobbiling
Hi. what are the mesurements for the door you made?
I LOVE ITTTTTT!!!!!!!!
thank u so much!
Very nice *****
Great job, it looks very nice, I'm sure you birds will love it, what kind of birds do you keep? I have 2 parakeets 1 boy & 1 girl.
Thanks you.
Hi from Canada.
Can i plant vegetables for my birds into the aviary
If you wanted to keep your bird out of the newspaper and droppings, you could just life up the cage and add another panel to the bottom. Removable would be ideal to clean but W.e.
Maybe just a separate panel that sits under the cage and on top of the frame for the birds to use as a floor
very good
Your voice is wonderfull, as your accent.
@cradleof11 yes sorry, not the most informative there I know but I don't know what to call it! It was a hard wood based backing to an old cupboard we used to have. Not exactly wood though, like a thinner stronger version of chipboard.
what if you spray it with clear coat first?
Wonderful bird house! May I ask how you attached the door to the mesh? Probably easily...but I can't grok it! :)
Cheers.....Pamela from North Carolina
