CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Clell Miller (Randy Quaid) requests a change of song from "Battle Cry of Freedom" to "Good Ol' Rebel."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The hook in Walter Hill's mythic retelling of the James-Younger outlaw legend is in the casting; the James, Younger, Miller, and Ford Brothers are played by a string of acting brothers, the Keachs, the Carradines, the Quaids and the Guests. The film begins as outlaws are robbing a bank. After the robbery, Ed Miller (Dennis Quaid) finds himself kicked out of the gang for needlessly killing a man during the robbery. Jesse James (James Keach) hands over Ed's share of the money and tells him to leave, a feeling held mutually by Ed's brother Clell (Randy Quaid). After the killing the gang decides to split up for awhile. The James boys return to their wives and farms, while Cole Younger (David Carradine) travels to Texas with his prostitute girlfriend Belle Starr (Pamela Reed). After the brief respite, the gang reunites to rob a well-stocked bank in Northfield, Minnesota. The robbery turns out disastrously, with most of the gang either wounded or dying. The James boys are the only ones not seriously hurt, and they leave the rest of the gang behind, escaping while they can. After the James boys leave, the remnants of the gang are captured. But trailing the Jameses is a relentless posse. Frank and Jesse manage to keep one step ahead until the Ford brothers (Christopher Guest and Nicholas Guest) make a deal with the Pinkerton detectives trailing the outlaws.

Randy Quaid one of the most underrated actors ever. Such a really great actor and this is also a very underrated movie.
Great in vacation too ,unfortunately he's slipped into madness if you're not familiar, very sad.

"Ride with the Devil", "The Outlaw Josey Wales" and "The Long Riders" basically show the Southern "Bushwacker" before, during and after the Civil War, and give good insight as to the types of guys who rode with Quantrill, Bloody Bill Anderson, and others. Great movies all, and all have that look of authenticity and are fairly historically accurate too.

The guy playing the guitar at 0:12 is Ry Cooder. He's played on 'A LOT' of Rolling Stones songs...among many songs by others - A GREAT GUITARIST! :)
He also inspired Duane Allman to learn slide guitar.

the guitar player is jim dickenson, a warner bros. studio player at the time, & friend of Ry's. a great soundtrack, recorded with period correct instruments.Ry was only involved with the stones on sticky fingers, & a bit of let it bleed. (he can also be heard on "jamming with edward"). he split after bad feelings.
Ry Cooder had a string ( no pun intended) of soundtracks around that time that were really good, check out Southern Comfort or Crossroads, Steve Vai makes an appearance at the end.
I think that's Mitch Greenhill on guitar rather than Jim Dickinson. Both great musicians!

Aaron Rider actually it was most likely 1866. though its still disputed. they should have had them play the southron battle cry of freedom.
Got hugely popular around there, but the poem had been published earlier... and had been written much earlier by a confederate officer

A good remake, but an almost carbon copy remake. it's original incarnation:
The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid released 1972, was a much better movie.
This film was better received and had a harder edge due to its R rating.
That doesn't definitively make it better but it's the more popular film.
Gotta disagree. Seen em both. Both were good. But I liked long riders better.
This was not a remake. They were different movies about the same event.
The South was allowed to be razed by God as punishment for its sins.
