      @@bennythepooh4905 There's been projects to expand public transit to the East for 3 decades now. The Pix-IX White metro line (project abandoned in the early 2000s), the Pink metro line (late 2010s proposal), the Notre-Dame tramway & Henri-Bourassa tramway loop, the SRB loop on Pie-IX / René-Lévesque / Parc, etc. Possible routes for public transit and even major station locations had already been identified for a long time. So in a way, everything was already in place for a fast-tracked project. It's just that nobody could agree on the type of public transit before.

    Highly jealous how Montréal is ramming full speed on transit expansion of this caliber. The only other city in the US that is on similar pace with expansion would be LA Metro. It's still kind of disappointing that they announced the REM de l'Est before deciding about the Dorval extension, though. Just by extending the tunnel a few hundred meters, they can connect to one of Montreal's major bus terminals as well as both commuter and intercity rail stations, and the cost to do that extension is much cheaper once the machine is already in the ground digging the tunnel.

    I personally think the line is not really well thought. The pink line made so much more sense. Rosemont is one of the populous neighbourhoods and they dont have proper transport. The line should have cut threw the existing blue and green line diagonally. Also the recent amt line to mascouche becomes totally irrelevant except if you want to go to mascouche or terrebonne.

    • @caribbb
      @caribbb 3 года назад +2

      Since there were three train livery designs for us to choose from I'd like them to just use the St-Laurent design for this expansion since it will mostly run along the river. Best IMO to keep the basic green livery but the small tweaks in styling and headlights would be sufficient to both make it different and keep the branding in line with everything else.

    • @thegreypenguin5097
      @thegreypenguin5097 3 года назад +4

      @@caribbb i wouldn't think they would keep the green tbh, because the reason the trains were green is because that is the theme of Ligne A right? So I would think Ligne B would be blue because that's the colour used to mark the route. I think green was originally supposed to be "REM theme", but I think now that there is another line, I think it might change. Who knows though.

    Excellent analysis Ellen! ⭐️ Get well soon Reece! 🌹
    I love how you said “the foot of Pie-IX,” that’s an expression I use too. ❤️ That station will probably be very busy.
    It’s a very exciting announcement. Since it’s headed by the CDPQ (Quebec pension funds, which are very well run), there’s a good chance it will be actually realized, not just perpetually announced (like the blue line had been...)
    Tunneling: it’s actually cheaper than cut-and-cover. Easier, faster, less disruptive. Especially in Montreal with its hard Ordovician limestone bedrock, it doesn’t need to be that deep. I’m a geographer also, I know this. But I admit it’s counterintuitive.
    Elevated: though it will be a little noisier, it won’t be any noisier than the 8 (!) lane boulevard underneath it. And it might make René-Lévesque blvd even better, it’s not exactly an attractive street now! They seem properly committed to making the downtown “L” an architectural signature.
    Capacity: I hope they do make the stations with the capacity for 4 cars. But a cheaper option is to make the Souligny/Hochelaga junction a triangle 🔺 rather than a Y so some Pointe-aux-Trembles trains could run up to Marie-Victorin, equalizing the 3 branches and giving more flexibility in the future. I believe that option of mixing the routes exists with the SkyTrain?
    Stations: they did a relatively good job at placement. Some name choices annoy me, they could have added a couple more, but it’s an excellent starting plan! ⭐️
    My ironic comment: they announced this the very day a friend of mine decided to sell his condo near the future Contrecœur station... Synchronicity... 🤪
    My sarcastic comment: they managed to doubly annoy me: with the REM/A being “light” green (apple? lime?), we got 2 green lines in Montreal... Now with the REM/B being turquoise, not only do we have a 3rd green line, but also at the same time a 2nd blue line! 🙄 Obviously they weren’t going to make a clear map and use red or purple or brown... And especially not pink! That would be saying Valerie Plante was right about demanding a new metro line... 😜

    • @RMTransit
      @RMTransit  3 года назад +1

      Excellent comment! They might want to consider a triangle, though Vancouver actually doesn't have them. That being said it's easy to turn trains around at interchanges!

  • @kevincloutier4833
    @kevincloutier4833 3 года назад +6

    Unfortunately this only marginally reduces the need for the pink line. Yes, Rosemont East, St-Leonard and Montréal North will now have an easy and quick access to the city. However the biggest advantage of the pink line is that it goes through the two highest density boroughs in the entire city (the Plateau and central Rosemont), which are currently relying on crowded buses that inch their way from stop to stop during rush hour. In addition the orange line below jean-talon is typically already full until Berri, which means people of those neighborhoods can’t even get on the subway. A pink line connecting Mount Royal and somewhere between Pie-IX and Assomption would be the project with the highest benefit for the most number of people in the city. However the big issue with this project is the diagonal line would be extremely expensive to build.

    • @taylorbartosh

      I agree! The pink line is still needed for the actual dense section of Rosemont where a large portion of the city lives.

Unfortunately an NDA prevents me from discussing that which is not already in the public. I shall say that while most of the fundamentals of the project are similar to what is presented here, there are some important changes that due to that NDA I can't disclose. But it's worth keeping an ear to the ground for when the project details do make it's way to the public. At that time I might suggest an update video to cover the changes. Sadly I don't know when these details will be released. I work for Systra IBT as a drafter since 2014. This means I have worked on both the new Samuel de Champlain Bridge and the REM project in Montreal as well as projects in Kingston (the third crossing bridge) and Davenport Diamond a rail grade separation for MetroLinx and Go Transit in Toronto with other great projects across Canada on the horizon as well.

      Not really, the model is based on Vancouver Skytrain. They have alot of similarities, station design, train, etc. The only thing that it will be different is the electricity will be over the train instead of on the track to avoid snow and ice accumulation. Our trains on the winter does not perform really well and REM resolve alot of problems we have. The real bad thing about that is the cdpq will make money but as a citizen we will be loosing and we will have to pay more on the long term.

      CDPQ is a way more efficient project manager than any other government entities. The REM1 will be operating way sooner (and way cheaper) than any other government entities would have been capable of (look at the Metro Laval extention, or the Blue line extention).
      The subsidy (in passenger - kilometer) that CDPQ will obtain is less than the current subsidy of operating STM buses / métro. So it's a bargain actually.
      And anyways, Quebecers own CDPQ, so any profits are Quebecer's gain! (And allows better returns to RRQ, SAAQ etc)

    Maybe things work differently in Canada than the US, but it’s interesting that it’s always assumed that a new rail line should have an expensive bored tunnel in the urban core, but when the private sector gets involved an elevated line is in? Why can’t our tax money build cheaper rapid transit?

      The REM ends up with a mix of all three (tunnel, surface, elevated) depending on the needs of the area it passes through, which really does seem like the best approach to me. I don't really understand why the builders of the metro insisted on it being 100% underground at the start, and designed it in such a way that it could never be extended above-ground.

    REM de l'Est: why only these high-frequency, high-tech, high-speed, big-infrastructures solutions? The demand doesn't sees to be there. Rather, a local or peak-hours services may be more adapted. Why not:
    a) use, at ground level, the old southern CN railbead from Pointe-aux-Trembles to Longue-Pointe;
    b) select technologies such as the EXO suburban trains or maybe a light rail;
    c) choose a connexion with the green line of the métro: easy at L'Assomption, Radisson and Frontenac or, with more infrastructure building: the Berri-UQAM hub or somewhere on the yellow line north.
    This kind of intermediate and lower cost solution would allow for generating the demand, which could benefit a future REM at a later stage.

Part of these targetted users are already served by EXO 5 from Pointe-aux-Tremble station to Mascouche on the North Shore.
      The more southern option of the CN corridor would be more "urban" by a) serving a clientele already established in the suburbs both sides of this corridor, b) reducing costs, and c) generating demand for a more developed future system such as REM.

    The problem I have with this project is that there will be elevated portions downtown. Montreal's downtown is really nice. Adding an elevated track to Rene-Levesque boulevard is going to be ugly. I'm all for public transit, but can't they just put the tracks and stations underground in the downtown section? It would add to the cost, but I think it would be worth it. I believe it's more of a priority to put this project underground in the downtown area than under Lacordaire boulevard. It would also add to the already big underground city.
