‘A bored jury will punish the lawyer’: Trump’s hush money trial enters its final stretch

- Donald Trump’s historic first criminal trial is entering its final stretch. Judge Juan Merchan has advised the prosecution and defense to be prepared to give closing arguments as soon as Tuesday, which means a verdict could just be days away. Before that though, the defense will spend a third day cross-examining the prosecution’s key witness Michael Cohen. Criminal defense attorney Danny Cevallos has a piece of advice for the defense: “Don’t overdo it,” he says. “Don’t keep him on there too long and start boring the jury because a bored jury will punish the lawyer.” He joins Charles Coleman Jr. and Hugo Lowell to discuss what to expect in what could be the final week of Trump’s hush money trial.

Ive been on several jury's in my life time and absolutely we pay attention too the defendant! The witnesses and how they act in court, example if they keep yawning seem angry face blowing we pay attention so this jury no different if trump doesn't testify in his defense dispute what is claiming here it definitely sends a strong message too jury why wont u testify
That first guy seemed a bit misleading about cohens book. The title was not just "Revenge"... the full title was "Revenge: How Donald Trump Weaponized the US Department of Justice Against His Critics"
Look, I'm not a lawyer, I'm a 66 year old male republican. I downloaded the all the transcripts thus far. This case was lost in just the opening statements. The prosecution laid it out all this evidence in such a perfect timeline along with a proven motive that it's indisputable. The prosecution at the end of the their opening statement could have said, the prosecution rests. What defense strategy could they use to prove it wrong? Its like starting a chess game when your king is already in Checkmate.
The defense only Hail Mary is to prove Cohen's credibility, but again regardless how Cohen testifies, the evidence is evidence. The only thing that comes out of Cohen testifying is that the evidence is either going to show he's lying or telling the truth. Since Cohen is not on trial but Trump, is there's nothing Trump can say or do to prove his innocence, he got caught with his pants down with his hands in the cookie jar.
Now I hate to do this to you but I'm going to type out the first page and a half of the defense's opening statement:

President Trump is innocent.
President Trump did not commit any crimes.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office should never have brought this case. You’ve heard this a few times already this morning, and again going to hear it a lot more during this trial.
The people, the government, they have the burden of proof to prove President Trump guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
What that means, as judge Merchan said a few minutes ago, is that President Trump is presumed innocent. He’s cloaked in innocence. And that cloak of innocence does not leave President Trump today. It does not leave him when you all deliberate.
You will find that he is not guilty
Now, President Trump, you’ve seen him of course for years and years and years. You’ve seen on television. You’ve seen him, you’ve seen photos of him. You’ve seen articles written about him. In some ways larger than life. But, he’s also here in this courtroom doing what any of us would do: defending himself.
You’re going to hear me, as I’ve done already today, and others, even witnesses, refer to him as President Trump.
This is a title that he has earned because he was our 45th president. We will call him “President Trump” out of respect for the office that he held from 2017 to 2021. And as everybody knows, it's the office he’s running for right now. He’s the Republican nominee.
But - and this is important --he’s not just our former president. He’s not just Donald Trump that you’ve seen on TV and read about and seen photos of. He’s also a man. He’s a husband He’s a father. And he’s a person just like you and me.
What the people just did for the past 45 minutes is present to you what appeared to be a very clean, nice story...........
Then it goes on and on about Cohen, the trial is bogus, there is no crime here, the evidence is just 34 pieces of paper 34 invoices.
Glad you aren't a lawyer, a judge or a juror. You want to convict defendants based on opening statements - no evidence, no witnesses - just a story from the prosecution. Clearly, you don't understand the importance of the American justice system and the presumption of innocence. I would urge you to actually look into the elements of the crime that must be proven - I think if you spent some time on that you may change your tune.
@@djdego02 Of course you need a trial to prove guilt, the point I was making is that in the opening statement The prosecution laid out the accused crime. Then you have political lawyers coming on TV there is no crime 2 weeks into the trial. All they are doing is telling their viewers what they want to hear. Then we have January 6th all over again if trump gets convicted. MAGA trumpets are pretty unstable.

If the defense tries to bring up Weisselberg then the prosecution needs to be able to bring in the Severance agreement where Weisselberg is offered hundreds of thousands of dollars to not testify.

The evidence linking the payments and the reimbursement is clear, it doesn't matter about the personalities involved their actions are proof. I would point out that the missing witness is just as damaging to the defence as he has accepted a financial inducement not to provide evidence against Trump.
All the jury need to do is review the evidence, and use their common sense. No one would write all those checks, and not know why the checks were being written. 💙
