LMS 6233 - The Duchess Is Back & At Speed ! The Midland Bristolian

- LMS 6233 'Duchess Of Sutherland' makes her full return to mainline duties after a lengthy period of downtime due the Covid pandemic. This is the first time since February 2020 that the Duchess has hauled any steam specials.
We catch the Lady in Red hauling the Midland Bristolian from Derby to Bristol as the class 8 loco is seen first at a damp Wynchor Junction making good headway with a great steam trail following on behind. A few miles further up the line we see the Duchess making a fine sweeping pass through Elford on the outskirts of Tamworth.
Timings were tight and we would have to get our foot down if were to catch another glimpse the big red machine, our sat nav had as arriving 8 minutes before it was due, thankfully it dropped a few more minutes and we were able to get set up in time to see her race through Ashchurch at 75mph ! Stirring stuff and with a great whistle to boot ! The return leg is seen at Willington with the draincock on the Duchess in full voice !

Caught the duchess mate at my local station and it’s nice to see the duchess making a welcome return to the mainline after being in pieces at the midland railway in Butterley
Barnstorming! Excellent captures and brilliantly filmed. The dead weight on the back was clearly there just for the ride it was very quiet!

Of all The Preserved LMS Locomotives Duchess of Sutherland is my favourite.
Wow, the base rumble off this loco is deafening as it approaches, must play havoc with the track. Lovely filming, looks great Airplayed on my 55"" TV.

A lovely video, thank you. With Princess Elizabeth seemingly out of action indefinitely and Duchess of Hamilton relegated to museum piece, Duchess of Sutherland has become the sole surviving LMS Pacific on the main line and as far as I am aware, the only ex-LMS locomotive currently on the main line in any LMS livery (though I hope I am mistaken).

LMS Pacific’s approaching at speed sound similar to progressive dance music, such as Pink Floyd “On the run” and Underworld “King of snake”.

As impressive as a Duchess is, especially at speed, it's whistle lacks authority somewhat. I can't understand why Stanier in all his designs took the whistle off the wet steam pipe and not the superheater header. Impressive video.
Of all the clips I have seen, 6229 has (or had) quite the sharper exhaust, to me......
She sounds better at low speed
