On of my favourite ABBA songs - it really speaks to a period of my life and fills me with warm, fuzzy nostalgia. Be prepared for lots of different genres on this album - they were searching for their identity in some ways. The next song, 'Disillusion' may require tissues...

The boys particularly Björn had a lot of lead singing in the early part of ABBA. Please react to these older songs from ABBA: "Dance (while the music still goes on), "Tropical Loveland", "Sitting in the palmtree", "Suzy Hang around" and "I am just a girl". They are great songs and a lot of fun to listen to. 😊

All four members first had their own careers and were established. When the group was formed, they had not found their ABBA sound yet. It was only with the song Ring Ring that "they found it". Björn was contacted by Radio Luxeburg, who was a hot name and that everyone wanted to be played in! In any case, they asked if it would sound like this or was there something wrong with the recording? They thought that Agnetha and Frida's voices were outside and not as usual inside it. Of course it should sound like that, it's our new sound! Björn replied. This was something new and became "The Real Abba sound 🎵🎶 Which we are very happy about 😍💕👑. You hear immediately when it's an ABBA song, sometimes only when you hear the intro! Wish you a nice weekend!🍺🍿🥃🎉

I’m happy that you are being honest with your opinions as a lot of people that react to songs on here don’t seem to be. Your Abba reactions are by far the best I’ve seen. For me personally, I love how the songs seem to ‘mature’ as the years go by, but that being said I love the early stuff too. Looking forward to your thoughts on ‘Disillusion’ 😁. My favorite songs from "Ring Ring" (1973) in no particular order:
    1. Ring Ring; 2. People Need Love; 3. Nina Pretty Ballerina; 4. Love Isn't Easy (But It Sure Is Hard Enough); 5. Me and Bobby and Bobby's Brother; 6. He is Your Brother; 7. Another Town, Another Train
Another notable fact from this album: "Disillusion" is the only song by ABBA to feature writing contributions by Agnetha Faltskog.

    "Another town, another train"
    so nice and lovely song,
    from the first álbum
    "Ring Ring" (1973)
    when They called themself:
    "Björn & Benny ; Agnetha & Frida"
Björn did a beautifull lead voice
and Agnetha & Frida gives a fantastic harmonies in the chorus
I think is the same style as the future worldwide hit "Fernando" in 1976
the Ring Ring album have a great A-side, and Another town Another train is a good one, 7pts to me

I love your honesty David. I cannot wait to hear and see your reaction to "Disillusion," which was written by Agnetha and Benny/Bjorn. As Frida recently said in her interview with Zoe Ball, Agnetha is such a great story-teller when she sings. And, although this is an early recording, you can hear that in her voice. I hope you like it!! You should have a listen to "My Mama Said," when you get a chance. Frida, as always, does a fabulous job on lead vocals. It's quite a jazzy little tune which obviously suits her, but you can almost hear "Voulez Vous" in it as well. Would love to hear your take on it. Stay mighty!! 😊🇮🇪🇮🇪

As it was recorded pre-ABBA, it wasn't included in Ring Ring -album in all territories but at least my edition of Ring Ring (bought in the 90's) it IS included. Growing up in the 60sand 70s, I was aware of the flute becoming more prominent. It seemed to start in the late 60s with the Beatles and Rolling Stones including it on album tacks. Of course Jethro Tull stormed the charts with Living in the Past just a year before Another Town Another Train. I think the Recorder as another wind instrument which began to creep into pop recordings. With a few successful recordings featuring the flute, I think as is often the case many others sought to cash in on the success. Just my humble opinion, as I am in no way a music historian! This connects to my post with my recommended tracks from this album: what I love most about this song is how smoothly all the voices and instruments are blended. I see your point about the recorder/flute, but I’m old enough to remember that 70s sound (born in 1971) so it’s normal to me.
IMHO: flutes, piccolos, and recorders provide an airy voice, and they can be used to build a lush breezy sound on a song. ABBA were/are sonic masters; they used very strong flutes to amazing effect on Fernando and Move On. (But you’ll get to those songs much later…)
And you’re 100% right: every album presents an impressive leap forward in their musicianship. (I’m an überfan yet I don’t hesitate to criticize the songs that fall flat for me.)

Great to know you're going to do this. You can watch the magic unfold. I'm the 58 years old fart from Australia who told you all those stories. Old as I am , I was only 10 when this came out! Agnetha, from memory, has a songwriting credit on disillusion, surely a noteworthy moment in itself..(All hail Agnetha, the Nordic goddess, with whom every male in the world who hit puberty between 1973/82, remains in love)..ahem..

By the way, in case you don't know, though I'm quite sure you probably do, the land down under has not failed you; Voyage has claimed it's rightful place at the top of the charts, as well as reaching number one in 18 other nations at time of writing. It's number two in the U.S., the highest number ever in the United States for an ABBA release. (C'mon guys and gals, you can do better than that!)..but as I have told you before, despite Australia and Sweden being geographically, and in many other ways, remote, we were one of the biggest markets, per capita, for ABBA back in the day, and apparently remain so. A glorious second coming!

One of the most underrated ABBA-songs and one of the best, featuring Björn as vocalist. An equal song is "Crazy world". he's not trying to show off a cool rock'n roller attitude like in later songs (Rock me, Does your mother know). It's more in tune with the harmonies of the girls.
The picture you described, you will find in the video to Bang-A-Boomerang.
Disillusionhas a special twist to it, since it's composed by Agnetha, have fun and get handkerchiefs.

Love the way you comment on abba songs great you are going to do them all. This song is folksy, a bit like the early Simon and Garfunkel. Also a bit kindred to the Scottish band Middle of the Road which i also like a lot. Not so strange that Bjorn sings here, he did have a big hit later on with the abba song Does Your Mother Know.

Hi mate. Thanks for taking us back to 1973 (you've definitely got the moustache for it this month!). I think you're spot on when you mentioned the "flower power" feel... it feels like a 1960s folk song to me, which is not surprising given Benny and Björn's background. I've always really liked the rhythm and melody line on this song, but I have to say, the first couple of albums are a bit patchy... some great stuff and some more forgettable stuff. They really seemed to hit their stride with the singles off the third album, and took off from then on. Thanks for making this an inclusive place: I know *nothing* about Nightwish, so I'll have to get on and educate myself! Have a great weekend, my friend. 🇸🇪🇳🇿

Written and performed in the style of Simon and Garfunkel and The Bachelors, the melodic ballad tells of the song's narrator leaving his love as "day is dawning". It was recorded in German under the title "Wer im Wartesaal der Liebe steht" (with lyrics by Fred Jay), as the B-side to the German version of "Ring Ring". With lyrics in Swedish by Stikkan Andersson, "En annan stad, en annan vän", it was covered by dance band Schytts in 1974, and by fellow Eurovision participant Kikki Danielsson in 1991 on her album "Vägen hem till dej".

Björn had delusions that he was a good singer from his old folk days in the Hootenany Singers, but compared to Frida and Agnetha he was not in their league. It took a few albums for the guys to realize they had no business singing lead vocals for the majority of ABBA's songs and eventually gave almost all the leads to the two women, who were master vocalists, only giving Björn a lead vocal maybe once an album. Benny only ever sang lead on Susie-Hang-Around... let's just say it's not their finest song. lol. Out of all the songs with the men singing lead or a shared lead with the women, there's only a handful that are actually seriously good, like Why Did It Have to Be Me?, Does Your Mother Know, and maybe He's Your Brother... maybe. The rest are pretty forgettable.

    Hi,
Just wanted to let you know, seeing as you are going to be doing a reaction to "Disillusion", there is also a Swedish version, "Mina Ögon" on Agnetha's solo album "Elva Kvinnor I Ett Hus". I love the concept of this album. Eleven songs and each song represents a different woman. This is peak Agnetha. Her voice is so clear and bright and powerful. I think the solo stuff I've heard from albums that were released before this one, everything up to "Som Jag Är", is a little kitschy. This is a better album. There is also a Swedish version of "SOS" on it.

Not sure I've heard this one before, but I'm already humming on it, that's the catchiness of ABBA 😁 I also prefer ABBAS "newer" songs and agree that the flute's a bit too much. I give it a steady 6/10. Bob Dylan used flutes in his re-arrangements in the 70's as well and I kinda liked that 😊🎸🎹 Have a nice weekend now!!

Nice reaction but I'd rather have you not pause too often.
I love this number to pieces. It was a foretaste of what ABBA had in store for the years ahead. Here, they've just started writing song lyrics in English language which is their second language, so one can cut them a slack if the lyrics didn't sparkle. But then, just look at how quickly they became very proficient in the mastery of English language and went ahead to become a force to reckon with in song writing field over the years.!
It is not easy at all to write lyrics, every dot and periods must fit in. ABBA scored more than 20 number one hits around the world with their own original songs and lyrics. Not even Elvis or Michael had all hit songs written by themselves alone plus when you consider the fact that english language was the mother tongue of the latter two.
I must admit it's really the flute and the paino arrangements that got me liking this song. It may be too much for you GivenToe, but I understand. I won't mind binging on this sugary number at all..... Let it be my sugary guilty pleasure. Ha ha ha. ..
