I've watched a variety of videos about the Neuro Hub, and this is the first one that made the big picture clear. It's a different paradigm. We are used to a world where presets have to be saved to each device, and separate MIDI Program Change messages must be sent to each device. With the Hub, only one PC message needs to e sent to the Hub, which sends settings to each device. Brilliant and simpler! Thanks for an excellent explanation!
I just looked at their website, and they're working on a single-pedal Midi adapter, it's supposed to be ready in January 2023 (which is this month) so if you only have one pedal, you can still use Midi to control it.
Ok so may be an odd question, but wouldn't using a 5 pin din to 3.5 mm adapter do the same job? Specifically if you're only using one of the One series pedals such as the LA Lady? I haven't been able to find an answer anywhere about this.
Good question! Interestingly enough, the older source audio one series pedals don’t actually understand midi. The Hub translates midi data into something the pedals understand. So no. That wouldn’t work. The control port that the hub plugs into uses SA’s tech, unlike the newer BOSS 200 series which use midi over the smaller plug.
@@Seanomatopoeia362 Thanks for making all this clear! I'm looking at getting the Aftershock (would be my first SA pedal), and hoping to get away without the neuro hub. The manual suggests its still possible to send midi via the USB port. I'm not after a tonne of options, on/off and say 3 of the stock voices would be enough. What would you recommend?
Source audio is actually in the process of making essentially a 1 pedal neuro hub, so if you only have 1 pedal you can still get everything involved with the neuro hub but instead of 5 pedals, just one at a time! I’m not sure when it is going to be released, but they teased on a month or 2 ago? Should be soon!
Nice video! Thank you for taking the time to do this! I have a question, I have 2 SA one series pedals but I also have a couple boss 200 series pedals that have the 3.5mm trs jacks as well, would I be able to come out of the neuro hub into the boss pedals as well and control them through this or is it for SA pedals only?
Wouldn’t know unless you try, BUUUUt I’m pretty sure the hub is proprietary and only works with SA pedals. I know there are regular midi to the 3.5mm trs adapters that you can use to go from big midi to little and then just chain them together.
Thanks for this very detailed explanation ! It is really helpfull to me as I am in the process of building a full MIDI effects rack and already have 2 SA effects, and will probly get at least one more. I just have one question: connecting your SA pedals thru the nero hub allow you to edit your individual pedals settings and savethem as a scene, but can you save each pedal setting as a pedal preset thru the neru hub ? Or does it requires to connect directly to the pedal ? Thanks in advance.
If you want to save directly to a pedal, then you must plug it in directly to the computer. If you aren’t using stereo or internal effect loop style preset, then you could use the app on your phone for the individual presets being saved to your library/pedal and then use the computer for the hub scenes!
Question: I’m assuming you are running midi out of the ES-5 into the Midi in of the Neuro Hub. Is that all you need to do to complete the midi connection besides chaining each pedal to the hub ports? I see there’s a midi cable running out of the Neuro Hub. Where is that going to? I’m about to pickup a Neuro Hub and redo my two SA pedals Midi connection. So much more streamlined and easier to make presets! This video has been a huge help. Thank you!
Technically all you need is the hub, but I have more than 5 source audio pedals as well as other midi controlled pedals. That midi cable was going to the preamp pedal.
Hello Sean, your video is great, you explain everything very well, congrats!! Just one question: what if I connect the Neuro Hub outs to other pedals that are NOT from Source Audio? I mean, can I connect the Neuro Hub to my 2 C4 Synth pedals AND to my 2 Boss SY200? I'm trying to do it, but I'm not sure it's working. Of course I cannot use the editor, but I just need it works as a simple MIDI hub, in order to transmit my MIDI PC (or CC) to the other device connected to the hub, even if they are not from Source Audio. Do you think it's possible?
You can’t take the midi out of the hub to the sy200, but it won’t save scenes or anything. Hub has midi pass through, but it doesn’t generate its own midi messages to control other pedals outside of the source audio eco system. (I’m sure this question has already been answered elsewhere)
If I understand your question correctly, no you don’t. Once the hub has its midi channel set, you only have to send a new PC message when you want to call up a new scene.. you only have to send it on whatever channel the hub is on. If you don’t send a message it will stay on the called up settings until you change them on the pedals or send a new message.
Hi Sean. Thanks for recording a video with all this information. I ordered a Disaster Area micro.ghost for my C4 and it has been stuck in USPS transit just long enough for me to realize I'm going to have to unplug it every time I want to hook the C4 up to the computer! Did you even try plugging any of these source audio pedals into a USB hub to avoid having to cable hop? Also, do you get any audio dropout or lag while the pedals / hub change scenes?
I know plenty of people who use a usb hub. I have one on my desk and have my hub plugged in as well as my Ultrawave. If you had an individual usb cable plugged in to each pedal they will all individually show up in the desktop app! This could introduce ground noise to your chain if you leave it plugged in all the time. Depending on what parameters are changing on the pedals there could be audio dropouts. It takes the pedals time to change presets (5-60 milliseconds depending on the pedal and the settings). I don’t have any lag that is noticeable when changing scenes.
@@Seanomatopoeia362 ah, good call on the ground noise. I am considering leaving a passive USB hub permanently on the board connected to whatever pedals support USB so I can just plug one cable into the computer if I want to connect to the HX stomp, source audio pedal, RJM, etc. I'll have to test it with and without to see about ground loop hum. Thanks!
Question. I'll be getting the hub and a midi mouse for one pedal (Aftershock). Do I need to save a preset to the pedal first to be saved in the hub or can I just create my sound and save it in the hub without burning it to the pedal?
If you want to be able to share your preset to the community cloud or your personal library then you should save it to the pedal. This also allows you to load it straight from your personal library to your hub scene. HOWEVER, if you don’t care about the neuro app community tab, then you can save your changes to the pedal and it’s various parameters straight to the hub’s scene. This gives you 128 presets instead of 3(read 6 with the WYSIWYG mode).
My ES5 does channel switching and such for my preamp sounds. If you have a midi controllable amp or something along those lines you can control it with a Midi Pedal or some type of control device.
I just recently received a la lady and can’t seem to be able to switch or change anything with the app connected. I must have something set wrong. Been trying to get ahold of sa for assistance.
I’d make sure that you have scanned the devices attached to the hub so it knows what it can “save” in a scene. I would also put it on a different midi channel so that it isn’t getting any other messages or anything from somewhere else. You may have to update the firmware or do a factory reset. Computers get funky like that’s if you’ve made some sounds you really like, make sure you save them to your personal preset library so you can get them back easily.
Hey Sean, I've got a midi question for you. I have 3 SA pedals and the Neuro hub and a Boss ES5. How do you set the midi in the editor to switch the scenes? You touched on it briefly in this video but didn't go into detail. The videos you have made so far have helped me a lot in setting up my Neuro hub. Thanks!
On the es5 you will send a PC (program change) Midi message to your hub. If you send pc3, then the hub will pull up scene 3. As an example. If you send pc15 it will go to scene 15. You don’t have to set it in the neuro editor, the hub does it automatically. You CAN map your own Midi in the editor, but this program change midi system works very easily. I was actually going to make a more in depth midi video but time got away from me. Hoping to get back into making videos this summer! I’m glad my video helped you out some!
@@Seanomatopoeia362 thanks man! It took me all day to figure what I was doing wrong. Turns out on a couple of the pedals I had the external control enabled so it was looking for my expression pedal. Also I use a 5150iii with midi for channel switching to integrating everything was kinda psychotic but I got it all worked out now. Looking forward to more videos when you get time.
Not sure why you don’t have more subscribers. You’re a good teacher. Helpful info knowing I don’t have to plug a usb cable into each pedal to set parameters. What about uploading sounds, such as a flanger sound to my lunar phaser. Do I still have to plug my iPhone into the second input jack? I want to be able to cascade my SA pedals on my pedalboard using straight pedal couplers. It would be a pain unplugging a pedal out of that. Is it possible to do that via the Neuro Hub?
Thank you! Probably because I’m not more consistent. (Have more time now since school is almost over for the summer, since I actually AM a teacher) You can do exactly that! The only thing you would need to do, is on each of your presets, choose a specific routing option. They will transfer the phone app info to each pedal as long as they are all connected. Source Audio also has their specific couplers that are made to do this as well. I’ve never used them, but presume since they sell them, they work correctly for their products! They might need to be trs patch cables instead of ts... but don’t quote me on that!
The older Soundblox2 pedals work with the NeuroHub too. In fact it's the only way, to upgrade their software. While they are not as powerful as the new One-Series, they are good enough for my purpose. And you can use them in a scene with all the new stuff.
Great help ! Thanks. I have 3 SA pedals and have been thinking about connecting them. I know nothing about this stuff. If I get the hub, I still need some type of controller? I’ve just been using like different old style stomp boxes.
You would need some kind of MIDI controller to take advantage of everything that the hub can do, but you don’t need a big loop switcher. Something small that sends Program change messages is all you need! Like the small morningstar controller, or the smaller disaster area midi controllers will do this no problem. You can just go up and down preset scenes with either of those devices.
It depends. The SoundBlox2 pedals have the same 1/8" TRRS-connector as the pedals of the One-Series. You can connect them to the NeuroHub. The NeuroHub is in fact a rebranded Soundblox Hub, which was silver. If you have older Soundblox or Soundblox Pro pedals, you can't use them to my knowledge with the NeuroHub.
Hi Sean, I really appreciate your video, it has answered some questions for me about etc hub. I'm considering getting 2, possibly 3 of their pedals and realize I might need the hub as I use midi to switch presets. The only question I have remaining is if I switch presets on the Hub will it affect all of the SA pedals its connected to? So if I have a chorus going on one of their mod pedals and then I want to turn on a synth in the C4, do I need to program the controller to keep the chorus on (or resend that preset) along with turning on the c4? Or if the chorus isn't a part of that scene to turn on the c4 will the chorus be unaffected?
There are two ways to think about it. 1: if your pedals are always on, but maybe your scene only changes a Ventris for example, all your other pedals stay the same. If you don’t change anything for the pedals in the new preset it won’t affect those pedals. Thought process 2: all your pedals exist in every scene. If you never change off of a ts9 engine on your kingmaker, no matter what hub scene you are on, they will all be your ts9 overdrive engine. You CAN send messages to turn on and off pedals through the hub without changing to a different preset, but that is a little different question I think… Let me know if that doesn’t quite answer your question.
Why hasn't there been something like this that works with other pedals. Basically a call to the pedals and a responds with their parameters and saving those states. I know it would require pedal manufacturers to agree on some sort of standard. Someone make this happen please!
