- In this video we will cover everything you need to know about Esomeprazole, also known as Nexium or Strontium. We will discuss how and when to use it, we will cover its side effects, dosage and much, much more. So make sure to watch the whole video so you don’t miss any important information.
Generic name: Esomeprazole.
Brand names: Nexium and Strontium.
Available as a tablet, capsule, oral suspension and as an injection.
How to use it?
- Capsule: swallow it whole with half a glass of water. These capsules are filled with granules, which are covered with a protective layer. If you have difficulties swallowing the capsule, you could open it and put the granules in half a glass of water and drink the water. However, do not chew on the capsule or chew on the granules, as this may break the protective layer, which will make esomeprazole less effective.
Tablets: The same is true for tablets. They consists out of small granules with a protective layer. Therefore take the tablet with half a glass of water or let it dissolve in a glass of water and drink it afterwards. However, do not chew on it.
Oral suspension: Do the content of 1 sachet in a glass, as a little amount of water, stir it and drink the water. However, do not chew on it.
Injection: your doctor or nurse will place the injection. Usually you do not need to do this yourself.
Here it is important to mention you can take esomeprazole at any time of the day, but it is best to do so at fixed times. This will make you less likely to forget a dose.
When to use it?
Esomeprazole is part of a group of drugs called, proton-pump inhibitors. These drugs selectively inhibit the production of stomach acid. Therefore Esomeprazole can be used to treat:
- Heartburn also called Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
- An inflammation of your gullet/esophagus.
- An ulcer in your stomach or intestines
- or an infection of the H. Pylori bacteria.
What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.
- However, when treating GERD your doctor might prescribe a dose of 20-40mg 1x day for 4-8 weeks.
- For the treatment of an ulcer in your stomach or intestines your doctor might prescribe a dose of 20mg 1 per day for 4-8 weeks.
- And when treating an H. Pylori infection your doctor might prescribe you 20mg 1x per day for 7 days, in combination with several antibiotics.
What are the side-effects?
- Common (1-10%): headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain and flatulence.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): edema, sleep disorders, hip, wrist and spine fractures, dizziness, vertigo, rash, itching and dry mouth.
Rare (0.01-0.1%): changes in several blood values, hypersensitivity reactions including fever, angioedema and anaphylactic reaction or shock, agitation, confusion, depression, taste disorder, inflammation of your stomach or liver, joint pain, muscle pain and visual disturbances.
Very rare (0.01%): multiple severe side effects.
Safety:
First of all, esomeprazole can cause dizziness or blurry vision. If you experience any of these, then please do not drive as this could be dangerous.
Furthermore, combining esomeprazole with alcohol, can increase its side effects. So take proper care when doing so.
Furthermore, esomeprazole can have interactions with other drugs your are taking. always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
Pregnancy and lactation:
Fortunately the available evidence shows that esomeprazole seems to be safe in both cases, however there are some exceptions. Therefore always discuss this with your doctor.

I have very bad hiatal hernia so I find myself taking my esomeprazole every day. I also take Thyroxine (Synthroid) every day. I take my Thyroxine every morning at 6 AM then take my esomeprazole at 7 AM. I read that you should wait at least 4 hours before taking esomeprazole rather than 1 hour. This confuses me. Please explain the best way to address this dilemma.

Samo, samo. 🤒, and if you don't know, now you know.
How long does it take for esomeprazole to kick in ? I’m on the third day now and I’ve had no relief
Here's what the official Nexium leaflet that comes in the box says: "Nexium Control is not meant to bring immediate relief. You may need to take the capsules for 2-3 days in a row before you feel better. You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 14 days.
"
So it looks like it takes at least a few days to take effect. You are probably on your 11th or so day now, so probably best to talk to your GP in a few days as per leaflet. Good Luck!
I had heartburn for a few weeks and went to the doctor, he prescribed this med and told me to take one per day 30 mins before breakfast. I hope it helps. When I lay down it starts to burn and once I got food from stomach come up to my mouth even :(
Same here
@@pougaigangmei8206 after taking it for a few days it worked. I had no heartburn whatsoever so I stopped taking it. It's slowly coming back now tho. I am trying to eat less and better but it doesn't work.
What is the reason that esomeprazole is recommended to eat half an hour before breakfast?
Depot tablet so it should not matter. And can't find any recommendation like that in my country.
Good for pain the belly
What is meant by pregnancy category A,B
10% isnt so bad right? im super scared of vomiting and i just took one of these... over the counter to stop heartburn but tbh i wanna go back to pepcid bc i have taken it before and im used to that one.
Esomeprazole gave me severe diarrhoea for 18 days..so i had to contact the doctor..he asked me to switch to Dexlansoprazole.. hope u don't get any side effects
Hi doctor, are you aware of any chronic effect of esomeprazole to a patient’s organs (except stomach)?
Yea kidneys
why u gotta do that now im paranoid bc i already took one...
I saw a video that shows the capsules has small needles, Is this true or someone is spoiling there names ESORAL (ESOMEPRAZOLE) 20MG CAP 14’S
You never spoke about the long term side effects of taking longer
Long term includes hairy palms, loss of vision in right eye, loss of facial hair growth etc
How to take esomeprazole before meal or after
Before a Meal
I am suffering from duodenitis.. doctor prescribed me Esomeprazole for 6 months, but it gave me severe diarrhoea for 18 days..doctor then asked me to switch to Dexlansoprazole for 3 weeks.. so, after completing 3 weeks should I switch back to Esomeprazole??
Is it still okay to drink it when it turns to purple?
Ive been getting Nexium 20-40mg for years now. For Gerd'ish sickness / Reflux.
Thanks for sharing. Have you any side effects from this drug?
@@Dellen-Roger I did get the diagnose IBS after. But yeah there is alot of small things like bloodied poop, indigestion etc. Now i know that I cant just quit using them since I will choke on my own acid while sleeping. But my case its alot of different sicknesses so I cant really pinpoint if its me or the pill. Ill come back to it when I get proof =) Ps: Doc also said i have a bad kidney and I should stop drinking (i havent touched alcohol in 15years atleast)
@@majorerr0r840I'm 30 and take a esomeprazole about once every second day. I had a drink problem for 5 years. Heartburn is just unreal pain. Do you think their is consequences of taking this drug?
Try to start with apple cider vinegar and replace with your pill. Many people in your case has switched and most are happily surprised.
If your symptoms are too bad in the beginning, when you need it, take one pill. And try to get off them, your body will learn to produce the right amount of acid and will heal.
Search for ”Dr eric berg acid reflux gerd” and watch a few of those videos and read the comment sections.
I hope this will help you, wish you all luck😊
👍👍👍👍
Need your help ,my doctor is giving me Emannera 40mg already for a year.Should I told him why?
Use Moderna covid vaccine it’s better
Four to eight weeks? No way! I know people who have been taking it for over 20 years. Acid reflux doesn't just go away. It's a lifetime issue because certain (very healthy) foods cause it. Foods you ain't gonna stop eating.
How to take esomeprazole before meal or after meal?
Based on my doc prescribed
After eat
is it normal for Esomeprazole Magnesium to give you diarrhea if you've drank beer hours later after your first dose?
diarrhea was literally on his common side effects list
I had 18 days of diarrhoea due to Esomeprazole..had to switch to other medicine
Can a pregnant woman use it
As 2 week pregnant
I believe it says no on the box. At least it says you can’t take it while pregnant on my bottle.
Margie from Simpson

Yea is normal .its said on the product 14 days and will heal you. I bought it from walgreens
Hi get heartburn badddd asooon as I skip oneeee day of trustan ,40
Same
I take nexium only when I have bad heartburn in my sleep. It immediately stops the heartburn and faster than Tums. I dont take it every day more like 2-3 times a week. Guess I need to make sure I take Magnesium and Iron.
Its not meant to be taken intermittently... Its a course of treatment, you can cause permanent digestive disorders.
Are you supposed to take nexium everyday I take it every morning
@@jesussalvation288 The Nexium leaflet that comes in the box says to take 1 capsule a day. it also says "You can take your capsule at any time of the day either with food or on an empty stomach"
My chemist told me to drink a glass of water with each capsule, and to not eat for at least an hour afterwards. Do check with your GP if you are unsure, or the instructions that came with your meds may have different information.
