  • In this video we will cover everything you need to know about Esomeprazole, also known as Nexium or Strontium. We will discuss how and when to use it, we will cover its side effects, dosage and much, much more. So make sure to watch the whole video so you don’t miss any important information.
    Generic name: Esomeprazole.
    Brand names: Nexium and Strontium.
Available as a tablet, capsule, oral suspension and as an injection.
    How to use it?
    - Capsule: swallow it whole with half a glass of water. These capsules are filled with granules, which are covered with a protective layer. If you have difficulties swallowing the capsule, you could open it and put the granules in half a glass of water and drink the water. However, do not chew on the capsule or chew on the granules, as this may break the protective layer, which will make esomeprazole less effective.
Tablets: The same is true for tablets. They consists out of small granules with a protective layer. Therefore take the tablet with half a glass of water or let it dissolve in a glass of water and drink it afterwards. However, do not chew on it.
Oral suspension: Do the content of 1 sachet in a glass, as a little amount of water, stir it and drink the water. However, do not chew on it.
Injection: your doctor or nurse will place the injection. Usually you do not need to do this yourself.
Here it is important to mention you can take esomeprazole at any time of the day, but it is best to do so at fixed times. This will make you less likely to forget a dose.
    When to use it?
Esomeprazole is part of a group of drugs called, proton-pump inhibitors. These drugs selectively inhibit the production of stomach acid. Therefore Esomeprazole can be used to treat:
    - Heartburn also called Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
    - An inflammation of your gullet/esophagus.
    - An ulcer in your stomach or intestines
    - or an infection of the H. Pylori bacteria.
    What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.
    - However, when treating GERD your doctor might prescribe a dose of 20-40mg 1x day for 4-8 weeks.
    - For the treatment of an ulcer in your stomach or intestines your doctor might prescribe a dose of 20mg 1 per day for 4-8 weeks.
    - And when treating an H. Pylori infection your doctor might prescribe you 20mg 1x per day for 7 days, in combination with several antibiotics.
    What are the side-effects?
    - Common (1-10%): headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain and flatulence.
    - Uncommon (0.1-1%): edema, sleep disorders, hip, wrist and spine fractures, dizziness, vertigo, rash, itching and dry mouth.
Rare (0.01-0.1%): changes in several blood values, hypersensitivity reactions including fever, angioedema and anaphylactic reaction or shock, agitation, confusion, depression, taste disorder, inflammation of your stomach or liver, joint pain, muscle pain and visual disturbances.
Very rare (0.01%): multiple severe side effects.
    Safety:
First of all, esomeprazole can cause dizziness or blurry vision. If you experience any of these, then please do not drive as this could be dangerous.
Furthermore, combining esomeprazole with alcohol, can increase its side effects. So take proper care when doing so.
Furthermore, esomeprazole can have interactions with other drugs your are taking. always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
    Pregnancy and lactation:
Fortunately the available evidence shows that esomeprazole seems to be safe in both cases, however there are some exceptions. Therefore always discuss this with your doctor.

I have very bad hiatal hernia so I find myself taking my esomeprazole every day. I also take Thyroxine (Synthroid) every day. I take my Thyroxine every morning at 6 AM then take my esomeprazole at 7 AM. I read that you should wait at least 4 hours before taking esomeprazole rather than 1 hour. This confuses me. Please explain the best way to address this dilemma.

How long does it take for esomeprazole to kick in ? I’m on the third day now and I’ve had no relief

    • @cullly
      @cullly 10 месяцев назад

Here's what the official Nexium leaflet that comes in the box says: "Nexium Control is not meant to bring immediate relief. You may need to take the capsules for 2-3 days in a row before you feel better. You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 14 days.
      "
So it looks like it takes at least a few days to take effect. You are probably on your 11th or so day now, so probably best to talk to your GP in a few days as per leaflet. Good Luck!

Try to start with apple cider vinegar and replace with your pill. Many people in your case has switched and most are happily surprised.
If your symptoms are too bad in the beginning, when you need it, take one pill. And try to get off them, your body will learn to produce the right amount of acid and will heal.
Search for ”Dr eric berg acid reflux gerd” and watch a few of those videos and read the comment sections.
I hope this will help you, wish you all luck😊

Four to eight weeks? No way! I know people who have been taking it for over 20 years. Acid reflux doesn't just go away. It's a lifetime issue because certain (very healthy) foods cause it. Foods you ain't gonna stop eating.
