The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient Greek analog computer and orrery used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses decades in advance. Discovered in 1901 off the coast of the Greek island Antikythera, it dates back to around 100 BC. The device consists of a complex system of bronze gears and dials housed in a wooden frame. It was operated by turning a hand-crank, which moved the gears to display the position of the Sun, Moon, and possibly the planets, along with the timing of eclipses. The mechanism also included a dial for the Metonic cycle, a 19-year period used to synchronize the lunar and solar calendars, and possibly indicators for the Olympiad cycle. Its sophistication suggests advanced engineering and astronomical knowledge in ancient Greece.
