good that you show this so clearly. all the movement of this horse is artificial and circus like show, by far not classical dressage. unfortunately judges reward such spectacel up to now, and there are a lot of very successfull riders who use these rollkur methods up to now. fortunately there are others who ride their horses in the classical way like von Bredow-Werndl and Dujardin, and win with naturally moving horses and are a pleasure to watch.
precisely, the expectation from judged and the “standard” is so exaggerated and almost un achievable. like in jumping also the jumps are so incredibly high and sometimes there has to be abusive training methods to reach the standards. people take greed over welfare. it’s a big problem within the equestrian industry. but i agree with you 100% valegro was incredible

It seems to me, that if you have to resort to things like Rollkur to win competitions, you're anything but a good rider. Short cuts always do more harm than good. If you're entering competitions for the prize money and fame, you have no business competing at all. When the FEI refuses to uphold the standards for the safety of the horses and honest riders, it is time for them to be replaced. All they are doing is lowering standards and supporting horse abuse. Judges who reward the abusers are equally culpable.
I can’t even watch FEI dressage because all I see is horses who are stiff and getting higj scores for not reflecting the training scale or the written directives. They are lax on the “trends” that make the appearance look nice, but they lose people like me who would otherwise genuinely like watching dressage. If they don’t start giving a damn about the horses wellbeing the entire sport will end up losing its social licence

This video really needs to be getting more views. The before and after side-by-side is so striking, and so heartbreaking. I find it so frustrating that his movement was so much more beautiful _beforehand_ - and there is nothing beautiful about an animal being forced into something so unnatural and uncomfortable. Many years ago, I was into show jumping and my coach made us take dressage classes. Until then, I thought dressage was horribly boring, but those demanding classes - and the stronger partnership with my horse that resulted - give me a great deal of respect for the discipline and I started enjoying watching it. As I said, that was many years ago - before Rollkur became a thing. I find it sad that this gets rewarded, but I find it absolutely heartbreaking that these noble creatures who are willing to do so much for us are so misused, and especially that it is done openly and at the highest levels of sport.

In the words of the legendary dressage trainer Fritz Stahlecker: "It is simple: what looks bad, is bad. Rolkur looks terrible, and it is terrible." But Rollkur wasn't the only "technique" used on Totilas and his sons: *Stretchies* were used, too = the way Dutch Harness horses and Hackneys and Saddlebreds are trained to step higher when started as 2yr olds. Stretchies amplify the front leg movement, while the hind legs lag behind. It causes asymmetry in the trot under saddle, especially in collection. ruclips.net/video/Vu2yQPz2hfQ/видео.htmlsi=KTQHRViA16EnfdZf - Sadly , carriage horse trot is the fashion in dressage. I've seen two hands tightening the crank noseband, the piece of sheepskin pad placed between it and the horses skin so as not to rub raw. I've seen mouths ripped open at the corner from rider temper tantrums. Still remember after 30 plus years.
@@kimsutherland977 I went to USDF regionals with my old trainer years ago and when I saw someone using rollkur in warmup I asked her if we should report it since it's technically prohibited and she basically told me that I didn't know what I was talking about and to shut my mouth. In other words, she endorses it and didn't want me embarrassing her by complaining about some well-known rider. She was good with green horses and riders but the more I watched her high level work (and got more advanced myself) the less I wanted anything to do with it. It's getting hard to be able to compete at all if you want to actually enjoy riding your horse and treat them fairly.
Rolkur=torture
If you watch the dressage with Tortilas closely, I believe he is in pain, the eyes and ears talk loudly, and dont get me started on those harsh bits. Beautiful horse cut down in his prime, and the humans wont admit they did wrong by him.
I 100% agree with you, he looks like he is in pain, the poor horse. The human is still doing this to Totila’s offspring and it’s ever so sad. i wish someone did something about this. he loved his job until he was abused. RIP angel and Thank you for your comment.
@@blackequine.official Best we can do is educate people, make them see horses are living feeling creatures, they deserve better then tortured for human entertainment, not just in dressage, in many so called sports.
@@blackequine.official why is it that dressage horses are all so sadly overbent and must be in discomfort
@@pixie706 They aren't supposed to be overbent. They used to be penalized for it. Yes, they are in discomfort, as it prevents them from using their body correctly. There is a video from a veterinarian showing the skeletal deformaties that result from the use of rollkur. It's absolutely disgusting!
@@DeborahHamilton-q1w one of the causes of kissing spine according to my vet. The lumbar bones are so compressed
This is so sad and painful to watch. All I can see in his eyes is pain 😔
Just look at how Gribaldi was under Gal. Absolutely horrific that Gribaldi suffered, only to have his children follow the same suffering. So tragic.
You could tell he loved it back then but now he’s destroyed he looks so happy with his ears always forwards then with it he’s obviously not happy poor legend
How people even do this? Like would you like your neck that tight to your shoulders? People think “ Oh it’s fine” But no it’s not this poor animal get his neck pulled back to his shoulder
The biggest issue with roll-kur, besides the physical and mental issues for the horses, is ; that only 1 of 100.000 riders are strong enough to still ride the horse uphill to a vertical nose line after using roll-kur. And only 1 in 100.000 horses has the physics and temperament to stand the physical strain and torture. And the two rarely find each other. It's absolutely not for normal riders or even most professionals.
I was in tears when i saw him as a foal......
This is incredibly sad. Rest in peace Totilas! I know a woman who has worked with Anky van Grunsven, luckily this person is not like her, she is very good with her horses and does not use rollkur. Thank God her teacher didn’t rub off ob her!
Fly high legend 🕊
This video is so important. Show the truth of how these brilliant horses are being tortured and ruined just so trainers can produce s grotesque caricature of a dressage horse. The epitome of evil, greed and senseless cruelty. Their shame is real and can not be erased or unseen. They should not be allowed around animals nor should judges who award them for this cruelty.
4. Richter werden zugeliost, nicht mehr eingeladen.
5. Stärkere Saktionietung bei Fehlverhalten bis hin zum Tierhaltungsverbot,
und Entzug der Trainer- bzw Richterlizenz.
Oh gosh I cried so much watching this. Beautiful, sensitive, devoted, absolutely amazing horse being so horribly exploited by griddy, talentless humans. How many more horse souls are they gonna have on their conscience? When this is gonna stop? How many more animals need to suffer? Meanwhile Olympics is going on and we see the circus continues... No lesson learned, I see no hope - the horse sport needs to end.
R.I.P to the top best show jumpers, Hickstead and Totilas 😢
This was so sad to watch rest easily Mr
The comparison is what broke me. Totillas on the right looks relaxed, with his head up and ears forward, he seems curious and like he's actually enjoying the exercise. Totillas on the left looks like something produced by Boston dynamics. 😢
These people should not be allowed to own animals!!!! NO place on this earth for them!!!!
good that you show this so clearly. all the movement of this horse is artificial and circus like show, by far not classical dressage. unfortunately judges reward such spectacel up to now, and there are a lot of very successfull riders who use these rollkur methods up to now.
fortunately there are others who ride their horses in the classical way like von Bredow-Werndl and Dujardin, and win with naturally moving horses and are a pleasure to watch.
precisely, the expectation from judged and the “standard” is so exaggerated and almost un achievable. like in jumping also the jumps are so incredibly high and sometimes there has to be abusive training methods to reach the standards. people take greed over welfare. it’s a big problem within the equestrian industry. but i agree with you 100% valegro was incredible
Unfortunately, Charlotte also uses a rollkur/LDR. The comments are full of defenders. It's funny to read. You just need to carefully switch your attention from what she says to what she does. 🥲
ruclips.net/video/4Hmg36UDWBc/видео.html
@@overdrive9356 Wow! What a way to spread a lie. She never rode that horse before. Her hands were soft and the reins were slack. The horse did not choose to relax into the loose reins. Who knows why. Maybe he was trained that way *BEFORE* Charlotte rode him for the *FIRST* time. She also said, tongue in cheek, that the audience response made the horse "hot." Have you seen her ride Gio? NOT A TRACE OF ROLLKUR!
@@blackequine.official yes Valegro AKA Blackberry was amazing. Lot of respect for Charlotte and Carl. 🇬🇧🇬🇧
@@kimsutherland977 Although Carl never practiced rollkur I think he may have supported it at some point if Im not mistaken, I may be wrong tho?
I feel so bad he had to live like that. He left as a legacy that will live on for many years. R.I.P Totilas. You will be missed. 🕊️😓
A tortured prisoner that had no choice but to submit until his body could do no more. If only the heartless could experience such torture...
Step up FEI or? and do something so no more will suffer! Time to set them free to enjoy their job once again.
So very sad to realize that this is still going on!
This is so sad....😢....but I love how you added Alan Watts commenting in the beginning ! 👍❣
Such an horrendous practice.
he deserved so much better. The people who did this to him should be imprisoned. No horse should have to go through this. Ling live the legacy of totilas, fly high 🕊🤍

I find it sad that this gets rewarded, but I find it absolutely heartbreaking that these noble creatures who are willing to do so much for us are so misused, and especially that it is done openly and at the highest levels of sport.
am sorry totilas he did not deserve this!
Guys don't be sad. Totlias Of course will keep being reborn until his home will be the best it ever has been! R.I.P. Totlias. You were never supposed to be a toy. Neither a machine. The people that did this to you are clearly not going in heaven. They ruined a life. And hurt one. We love Totlias forever. People that see this comment, Like if you agree. Please DON'T ever treat any animal like this. As it's heart breaking to watch. We will miss Totlias. This is the biggest comment I've made for him. RIP
What a great recipe! And very well presented, THANK YOU!
The poor guy needs a huge apology, but he is a legend and we will never forget him. He stood to be famous and he was, they even erected a statue of him. Maybe other people will forget him, but the riders will never ever forget him just like any other famous horse. Rip Toto😭😢
Oh by the way i follow you on Pinterest! Your edits are amazing !!
A beauty
Wow, I've never seen early videos of him. Still an incredibly talented horse but he's so much more relaxed and natural looking. And they consider that lower level training 🙄😡 As if it's impossible to perform more complicated movements without cranking them in. I believe the SRS would beg to differ.
He’s a 4/5 year old on the right hand side, so bubbly, so lovely. loved his job, loved his people. eager and then turned and tortured by his new owners, it’s so sad how people just change a horse and how much power we have and we abuse it
@@blackequine.official imagine how he could have looked if they kept training him in that style to perform higher level movements lightly and correctly, instead of using that weird unnatural movement to redefine scoring standards. It really is turning into Big Lick with the goal being how high their knees can get 🙄
Oh, and that whole thing where they claim that the horse flinging slobber all over is a sign of how "accepting" they are of all the hardware jammed in their mouths. Uh, no. No other discipline will EVER say that. A horse that's content with their bit in quiet hands has a quiet mouth.
It has been two years without you we miss u!:(
Heartbreaking to see, poor little fellow. Little did he know as a little colt.
The breeders are breeding carriage-trot warmbloods for the market and getting good auction results with high-stepping, hollow-backed 'harness type' warmbloods. What a shame.
Poor dear beautiful horse such abuse for so called glory, he was glorious without this supposed ‘training’ 😢
Betrayal
A sweet horse was gone too soon because of a horrible rider. The FEI really need to crack down on this
Terrible. Awful. And what for? It's a shame, what these people did to him 😪.
I was so happy to just find out that one son of Totilas, Toto, has been training with Mia Lykke Nielsen. May he have a better and happier future!
Look at his tail, he seems to be suffering!
So painful to watch😢

It's barely any better now.
Fly high totilias you derseved sooo much better what awful humans can do this to a horse or pony
Once we humans start scoring a sport, extremes are slowly created. And unless that sport penalizes such extremes, the animals will always suffer. Ban nosebands. Then penalize horses that open their mouths in resistance to or pain from the bit.
Do you know anything about horses?
I acruely cryed by this one 😢
How healthy he looked as a normal horse before ….. what a tragedy.
Do anyone know when did they start with the rollkur?
I believe after he was 5years old. there is a video of him before Rollkur; he was such a relaxed and light footed horse

The moment the IOC changed the rules to permit professionals to compete it spelled the utter destruction of the art of equitation.
None of these "methods" would have been conceived of much less employed on talented equines were it not for changing an art form into an entire profit making enterprise from breeding to competition and all between.
Look at the bit ....
horse is the how we get around back then
Sooooo sad. And this has become the preferred movement it seems to eventers and audience. Soo sad. Humans suck
Poor boy, they killed him.i don't watch dressage anymore.
NO horse EVER has died from type of bit or a new position of headset.
I want to read the autopsy report. Does it show Ketamine or pain killers of any kind?
Did I ever claim he died of rollkur, i gave insight to the life he had, the people who ruined him and what he endured and how the whole world turned its back and didnt protect or help him, including the judges. He died of colic, many people get confused
The position his kneck is in his head pulled to his chest, makes it impossible to breathe 😢😢😢

why dont the global organizations forbid this?
Rollkur is torture and unfortunately many countries use it and it is allowed 😔

The "Rollkur Method" should be illegal to use on anything animal or being
It reminds me of the big lick Tennessee walker unfortunately

There are no words that can describe how I detest dressage competions of today and mot of the riders that performs in them. Our national "star" Patrik Kittel time after time show us that he has no compassion for the horses and only wants to win and be famous. All he does is to find excuses for how he and others, like Helgstrand that he cooperates with, treat their horses.

This is all nice but totilas never perfomed soo well then with Edward...some horses have a tendence to rol kour and some transitions make them do it for a moment, doenst means your are doing bad to the horse but it is how they are in terms of submission...real feeling and not face riding, horse and rider should be one together
Anyone with any sensitivity and perception could see the love that stallion had for Edward.

why is dressage a thing? It constraints the horse's natural energy and individualism so must be a an expression of human ego.
