Though not stated anywhere, I think the Battlestar influence was a major thing for the game. As you guys said, the theme of "are you alive?", what is consciousness, are we the same etc, but the fact that death is a learning experience as long as you have the bunker/resurrection ship nearby. I felt it was too much of a coincidence. Machines and androids siding vs other machines is also akin to the humans and cylons fighting other cylons, making it a conflict of morals rather than a conflict of species.

BSG (03/05) is such an underrated and underappreciated series. A reimagining done right!
