It's been lost for over 50 years. Nothing has changed. They are exactly the same. The only reason the few like Romney are upset is because the others aren't hiding what they are anymore.
Republicans haven't changed in any way at all. They simply took the mask off and stopped pretending to be something else. And some are just upset they can't hide anymore. That's it. Nothing else is different. Romney isn't any better.

Lifelong Republican. Back in 2016, I said to someone at my church, if Trump is the nominee, I’m going to hold my nose and vote for Hillary. Thought I was speaking figuratively, but as the curtain was closed I literally did just that. When the RNC sent a questionnaire and a request for donations in 2018, told them that I wouldn’t be voting Republican again until my party grew a spine, and that I fantasized about having a lawn sign made that read: “Republicans against thin-skinned, narcissistic, misogynistic, bullying blithering blowhards in high office”. Romney at least has a spine; most of my party - not yet. If you'd studied-up on Hillary, you'd have found a rather conservative woman who was in a young people's youth group at her church and devoted herself to doing what Jesus taught. She gave 2 yrs of her life after law school to helping disabled kids in Boston who had been told by the school system they were not funding special ed classes again--no learning to read and write if you are in a wheelchair!--and in Georgia where private schools were segregated but taking public funds. She wore a wire to catch officials promising all-white schools.
She has continued pro-bono work for kids all her career. She was respected by both parties for her time in the Senate because of her hard work and bipartisanship--there is a tape of Pence appearing with her on a Sunday morning show, raving about her.
She had nothing to do with Benghazi--there was a top secret CIA outpost there reportedly--the ambassador weent there tho he was ordered not to, because he wanted to destroy files identifying those people in the Middle East who helped the US thru the years. The soldiers went to help and protect him.
A Secretary of State has no Constitutional authority to order the military to so much as pick up a penny on the sidewalk--only Commander-in-Chief Obama and Defense Secretary Panetta had authority to act! There were a dozen hearings and investigations over Benghazi--Hillary was absolved of blame in every one of them even tho grandstanding Repubs such as Utah's Jason Chaffetz made her look =guilty of "something." The military investigation found her innocent except as ev ery member of the government bore blame for automatic budget cuts.
As for the emails, right before she became Sec/State, everyone in the Bush admin used the RNC server--they refused to hand emails over to the National Archives until sued! Cheney'smessage traffic for a week or 2 surrounding the lies about WMDs disappeared forever! Comey wrote a letter to all FBI employees explaining the Espionage Act--the ONLY law against anything close to Hillary's behaviot--it requires 1 of 3 intents be proven--intent to profit financially, intent to hurt the US, or intent to help another country. She had none and could not be prosecuted. That's why a dozen investigations and hearings into THAT all ended without recommending charges. And Repubs did NOT try to change that law when they held Congress and Presidency. Trump kept using his old phone as did Javanka.
Don't believe the crap Repubs fund raise off of Hillary with. At one time it was weorth $1 Million every time they mentioned her!

Well, plenty of blame to go around. Of course there are a bunch of idiot republicans who resonated with Trump's hateful message and strong nationalism. But don't forget that it was liberals that treated Mitt Romney as an extremist when he ran for president. They made a giant deal out of nonsense like the dog on his roof, his devotion to his faith, the fact that he made a lot of money in private equity, and on and on. Liberals treated Romney, who was clearly a moderate, as though he was Trump-like. For many republicans the conclusion was that Romney wasn't extreme enough, that moderation was weak. So you got Trump.
So it's everyone's fault. Current idiot republicans. The bigoted evangelical assholes who refused to vote for Romney in 2012 because of his religion (which is asinine since mormons as Christian too), and liberals who pushed republicans farther to the right with how they treated Romney.
In short, America has what it deserves. A fucking corrupt asshole who tried to take down democracy and a senile elderly man, who could have retired as a hero from the presidency, but instead will end up being hated for being the guy that loses to Trump.

I am glad David brought up how the meaning of conservatism has changed because I have always called myself a conservative independent. However, over the past few years, since MAGA, I have dropped the word conservative and just said I am a registered independent. At 18 years old, while my parents were both registered Democrats, I reviewed both party platforms and did not agree with any side completely, so I registered as an Independent with Christian conservative values. MAGA has hijacked "Conservatism and Christianity" and now anyone who professes to be either or both, is deemed a hateful, intolerant racist.

@@auntypha5958What is your take on me, neither a Demcrat nor a Republican? I said I am a Conservative Independent. As a Conservative Independent, there are no labels such as progressive or non-progressive, or liberal or non-liberal. Furthermore, why do Republicans like Romney get to be in your words, "normal conservatives?" What I can say is as an Conservative Independent, I can have the freedom to be progressive or non-progressive, liberal or non-liberal about any individual subject and yet not be pegionedholed. However, people always try to group others. When I was talking to my aunt back when I was in law school,my aunt said to me, " Oh you're a fundamentalist..." She had to label me to filter my views and opinions through being a "fundamentalist."

Yes, some of them actually do want fascism, that can’t be denied. But I dare say that without the rhetoric that pushes them to support politicians who DO wish that, the populace would not lean so heavily in that direction.
