Ian Astbury is one of the most underrated rock vocalists ever. Dude still has the pipes at 60 years old. Someone already mentioned the video. Check it out. Much love from Texas.
I always liked Ian, I so them twice in the 80s. But I was truly blown away when I saw Ian with the Doors. Nobo can ever replace Morrison but if anyone was to step up to his mic, Ian is that guy and he proved it with flying colors.
I've seen The Cult 3 times and he's always as great or better live than on the albums. These guys are all pure energy. Ian is a helluva dancer and swayer as well. lol
I saw them a couple of years ago at the Roundhouse in London and he was terrible. Overweight and out of breath. Could only sing half the words and relied on the crowd for the choruses as he struggled for breath. Think he’s got into shape since but felt sorry for Billy Duffy cos he was superb as always..
You have to SEE this video. The performance is legendary. Ian Astbury is quite the attraction! Guitarist is Billy Duffy lights up the stage. Gosh they should ban lyric videos. You guys have been to a concert. You’ll love this performance. Read the comments of the video performance. They are really funny.
Should have watched the actual video of band performing as you are missing the fire that the beautiful Ian Astbury ignites on stage. Not many front men with that kind of natural born stage presence and yes, he and Billy (guitarist) are the dynamic duo and The Cult is ICONIC and Timeless.
The Cult are one of the essential hard rock bands of all time... the core of the band are British-born Ian Astbury (vocals) & Billy Duffy (guitar). They came together in the early 80's and debuted in 1984 w/ the album 'Dreamtime'... but it was the 2nd album 'Love' (1985) that brought commercial success w/ the hit single "She sells sanctuary". More platinum success came w/ he albums 'Electric' (1987) and this 1989 album 'Sonic temple'... However, alcohol and drug issues w/ Ian Astbury created conflicts w/ Billy Duffy... The Cult declined in the 90's w/ 2 more albums 'Ceremony' (1991) and 'The Cult' (1994)... before the band split up. After a few years apart, Astbury & Duffy reunited The Cult to tour in 1999 and released the album 'Between good & evil' in 2001, but broke up again soon after. Thankfully, Astbury and Duffy resolved their differences and relaunched The Cult again in 2006 w/ the album 'Born into this'. The band has been recording and touring consistently until now... They have featured a few famous drummers in The Cult - Eric Singer (Kiss / Alice Cooper), Matt Sorum (Guns N' Roses / Velvet Revolver), John Tempesta (Testament/ White Zombie / Rob Zombie). The Cult classic songs - 'Love removal machine' ... 'She sells sanctuary' ... 'Edie (Ciao baby)' ... "Lil' devil" ... 'Wildflower'... 'Rise' ... 'Rain' 🤘🤘🔥🔥
The Cult one of the most underrated bands ever, still out touring and making new music!! You always miss out when you don't get to see the visuals during a Cult song!
Agreed the music video showcases the band very very well! Ian has the best stage presence. I have seen the Cult live a few times in the 90's. Every show was FIRE. This by far is one of my favorite songs of theirs. I also really love Wildflower. Great reaction!!
Believe it or not, but The Cult is a British band. Excepting American drummer (not an official member, sadly) Mickey Curry, who I'm sure you noticed for his INCREDIBLE groove, heavy hitting and versatility. He's one of the greatest rock drummers ever and is best known for a very long and fruitful stay in Bryan Adams' band, producing innumerable classics. He also plays on the very classic 1991 Alice Cooper album "Hey stoopid", one of his greatest performances ever - and that's saying a lot. Sadly, he only plays on two the Cult albums - mega seller "Sonic temple" (1989), from which this song is taken, and its followup "Ceremony" (1991). But, what a job he does on them! The Cult are still around, with core duo Ian Astbury (vocals) and Billy Duffy (guitar) as only official members, but are sadly so stylistically and qualitatively unpredictable that they have lost all relevance on today's music scene. But "Sonic temple" in particular lives on as a pillar of hard rock perfection. OK, to the mainstream the band is better remembered for their 1985 goth/pop/rock hit single "She sells sanctuary".
"She Sells Sanctuary" is my favorite hit from them. Ian Astbury rocks. There is a band called The Church and they did a song called "Under The Milky Way" and another band called Jesus And Mary Chain with a song called "Just Like Honey" and of course Judas Priest with "Breaking The Law."
Rain by the Cult is one of my favorite songs. As others are saying, Love Removal Machine, She Sells Sanctuary, Spirit Walker, and Wild Hearted Son are all good. I also like a bluesy b-side they did called Wolf Child Blues.
Some songs just get played a million times on the radio and you just get sick of them. But this ain't one of those. This song just keeps getting better every time you hear it.
Great "party starter" song. That whole LP is badass...In my opinion, one of the best, and terribly underrated Rock albums ever done. Ian Asbury is a top shelf "front" man. There's a REASON he got the gig to do the vocals for The Doors on their reunion tour.
Saw them two weeks ago at the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada! EXCELLENT!!!!!!!! Knew every song in the set and was rocking out (I'm 57yrs old)! Ian was fantastic for the whole show, but he twisted his ankle doing his antics towards the end 😲. Billy Duffy............AMAZING! Had the Gibsons and the White Falcon singinnnnnng! Great show, THE CULT FOREVER!!
Back in the day when cassette tapes were still a thing, I played my copy of Sonic Temple till it wore out and had to purchase another copy. The whole album is epic, and Fire Woman was another banger that had my parents screaming "TURN THAT DOWN! "😃
Asia nailed it. Astbury does have a unique hint of “soul” in his voice. The reason he was able to work with the Doors so successfully. You guys have been mixing up the review/reactions better then anyone out there. From SouthPark to the Cult to Larry Elder……… Bravo, keep up the goods. You 2 are on a roll. Must do the Cults “She sells sanctuary” next. Snd I recommend that you watch the original music video to it.
After being a fan For Many years I was finally able to catch them in concert this month. Songs sometimes are hard to figure lyrically but this one…..bout a fiery femme fatale…. Love Removal Machine next from them
A great well written song is universally recognized, no matter what your musical preference is. The Cult has written some amazing songs, and Fire Woman will get everyone on their feet. Asia's joy is beaming. I think she liked it.
The Cult are one of my Favorite Rock n' Roll Bands and thanks for answering my request!!! I wish you guys could react to the Live video to this song and capture the performance of The Cult!!!! It is FIRE!!!! lol hahahaha
YES, You Have to See the Video, they would drive you Crazy! The Cult was fire, back in the 80s and 90s, Ian Astbury on vocals and wild stage presence and Billy Duffy on killer guitar. Try Sweet Soul Sister or Edie (Ciao Baby) off the same killer album, Sonic Temple. Great stuff, try watching them next time, it is worth the effort! Enjoy. 🎸
Wife here..My favorite cult song!!..Banger for sure!! U2 r sooo cute.!!!."Firewoman right here"..Love it!!..Lead singer does have some soul in his voice..I think the key to their success..!!! 🔥.."kaleiente for real for real".!!
guys...wish you'd done the original video of this..IAN,the guy singing had the best hair in rock n roll back then..my family in the salon biz for the last 53 years..he had the best hair like ever...no lie..next cult video..do the one that landed on Mtv and see for yourself...great band...top 4 band of all time for me..thanks for the post..made me smile...LOL
I agree he had the best hair in rock n' roll back in the day. I have seen The Cult four times going back to January of 1987. Check out the hair of Ethan Torchio, the drummer of Italian rock band, Maneskin. He has the best hair in R n' R now.
The drummer on this album (Sonic Temple) and the next (Ceremony) was Matt Sorum. He left The Cult to be the substitute of Steve Adler on Guns and Roses
Great song reaction. You need to see Ashbury and his bandmates performing to truly appreaciate their showmanship and how good this song is! Ashbury had the swag, the voice the moves and the voice. He was as good as a front man as there is!
I LOVE THE CULT! Fire Woman is one of my jams too. I won ca$h just singing this song in karaoke competitions in the early 2000s! Asia you're absolutely right, Ian Astbury DEFINITELY has soul! Other songs you should hear: Edie (Ciao baby), Sweet Soul Sister, Spiritwalker, Rain, In the clouds, Love Removal Machine. I saw The Cult live in 2013/2014 and they STILL ROCKED IT!
Listen not the biggest band of the 80’s 90’s but the best live rock band out there at that time for me. Saw them many times and they’re still touring now ! Ian’s vocals ( the man can saaaaang!) and Billy’s guitar are a match made in heaven! Nothing but utter respect to them! Check out Love Removal Machine for a great rock song next!
This would have been blaring on the cassette deck of my Camaro in 1989, mullet flowing majestically in the breeze. 😆 Gotta hit "Sun King," "American Horse," "She Sells Sanctuary," "Love Removal Machine."
The Cult are largely forgotten but it’s a shame. So many great songs although this might be their greatest. Up there with Wild Side, Welcome To The Jungle, and Still Of The Night as the biggest hair metal bangers of the Eighties
Yes, you need to see the video and see Ian Astbury's dancin!!!!! This is my favorite song!!!! Thank ya'll so much! The lead singer is very entertaining and fun to watch!! Please do "Edie, Ciao Baby" next by The Cult! The singer is a Celtic Irishman and you can see his feet do riverdance moves sometimes! I love to watch him!!
The guitar player is the incredible Billy Duffy. Saw these guys live they rocked! As for Mr Astbury gorgeous. All Cult fans know this stage humping video!
Your comment on Southern Rock is well founded. They’re not from the South BUT the original name of the band was the Southern Death Cult. Later shortened to The Cult. You really need to watch the video that goes with this song. It’s freaking AWESOME!
The video aids in the song - shows the vibe of the singer - try the WITCH, RAIN, SHE SELLS SANCTUARY, and of course LOVE REMOVAL MACHINE - all classic iconic songs.
Gotta see them on the Official Video!! Also Check out " The Cult - Love Removal Machine - Lil Devil - She Sells Sanctuary - Sweet Soul Sister - Rain" Official Videos, the singer Ian Astbury also toured with the Doors for awhile, Great substitute for Jim Morrison!
This whole band was a total fire while swimming to a counter current back in the days... and funny enough the songs are about passion and very traditional love.. oh man they were great!
One of my favorite rock songs of all time...if you get the chance, watch the video. It just adds to the greatness of Ian Ashbury (vocals). Thanks so much for the reaction...love you guys!
The Cult members Ian Ashbury and Billy Duffy were displeased with New York based producer Rick Rubin. The Electric album did not sell as much.as The Cult expected. Thus, The Cult recorded in Little Mountain Sound, Vancouver, Canada 🇨🇦. They liked how the records of Aerosmith, Motley Crue, Poison, Whitesnake and other musicians sounded 👂. Produced by Bob Rock. Engineered by Mike Fraser. Written by Ian Ashbury and Billy Duffy. All star 🌟 backing musicians. John Webster on keyboards 🎹 (Aerosmith, Tom Cochrane, Steve Jones, Andy Taylor) and Mickey Curry on drums (Hall & Oates, Cher, Alice Cooper, Steve Winwood, Bryan Adams). Mickey Curry left Hall and Oates and is the current studio drummer for Bryan Adams. Ian Ashbury was born in the UK 🇬🇧 but spent much of his childhood in Canada 🇨🇦. Billy Duffy was born and raised in the UK 🇬🇧 Great song 🎵 👌 Suggested video 📹: Sun King.
It is a common thing for people to think The Cult are American. First because they adopted a lot of American stuff in their clothing starting with the album that this song comes from and second because Ian is/was heavily into native American culture. I think that was also one of the reasons it resonated strongly with me from the start, like the song Wild Hearted Son on the same album, especially the video clip with it. Billy is in my opinion the most underrated guitarist on the planet. And yes they are British. ;-)
Goodness he is so beautiful with his long black hair and big lips. I bought their album and played it the whole summer! Still will play on road trips. ❤
Yesss! One of my favorite bands when I was in college so long ago. You gotta dig deeper in their catalog. Love Removal Machine, Lil Devil, She Sells Sanctuary, Sun King, Peace Dog, Electric Ocean
What a fun reaction! Asia mentioned his voice It’s “Jim Morrison” only just a little more nasal twang He did tour with The Doors he sounded so much like him ✌️🎶
Funny story. Before I ever heard Metallica I was a fan of The Cult. I saw The Cult (open for Metallica) in 1989 in Houston. After the show we saw The Cult members signing autographs at their tour bus and went over to it. When I met Ian (the lead singer) I told him, "man, you guys were awesome and blew away Metallica." Ian looked at me like "are you being a smart ass.?" I wasn't. But I can understand now why he might think that.
Next up. LOVE REMOVAL MACHINE. Billy Duffy and Ian Ashbury shred the vocals and guitar as the drummer mounts a full throttled attack in the second part of the song. Open your ears wide and get ready to white knuckle your way through this wicked ride !! And on the other hand-in-hand listen to the Rolling Stones comic track, SHE'S SO COLD. The video will leave cracking up at the moves by Mick Jagger. Enjoy.
Fantastic great song, so high energy..kinda sad you didn't watch the video, so adds to the song. Another great thing about the 80's is this was when MTV was new as you know and was 24/7 videos so every single from from every band was about not just your song but what is your video going to look like so a lot of planning and detail went into it
They have a song sweet soul sister. You are going to love it and this band has never put out a bad album. Seen them on the sonic temple tour and they were great.
You have to watch the video to this song. Ian Ashbury has more moves and mic standing spinning than can be said. And Asia....you are a straight up fire woman! Hot as anything. BJ you da man!
Are they watching the actual video, but we just see the lyrics? They're faces look like they're watching them perform...I really hope so..everyone should watch them perform..Ian and Billy are incredible. I've seen them a couple times, they put on an incredible show
YYYEEESSSSSS! this hole album... cd sonic temple is absolutely great! Dudes like a white james brown of hard rock! Lol "SWEET SOUL SITER" my personal favorite... and their big, big hit "EDIE" (Ciao baby) "solder blue" " new york city" " sun king" "Soul asylum" "American horse" ya definitely gotta do more of them please! 👍
Um, there was no hiding it... this girl Asia was the Fire woman in This video 🔥 😉 😎 (oh and btw... she's also got a good ear: Because she heard that "southern rock voice", which no other reviewers picked up. Well guess what- way Way back in the early 80's, the original name of the band was The Southern Death Cult. Straight fact 💯 👌 👍 ~
Back when I first saw the Cult Video's, I thought Ian Astbury was an Southwest "Apache" American Indian . Long black Raven hair and the song's they sang were spiritual and women based.
Great reaction!!! You're right Asia, I detect soul in his voice as well, big time. Love it. You won't be disappointed if you react to: "Love Removal Machine", "She Sells Sanctuary", etc....
Ian Asbury and Billy Duffy been killing it CULT style 40 years!!! U gotta check out Electric album tracks Peace Dog, Wildflower, Love Removal Machine...
Man…what a great band …I put the Cult in there with AC/DC & Motorhead ….their biggest most popular songs all have a similar something & they were smart enough to not mess with it too much because it works….no need to mess with the recipe when it tastes good ya know? 🖤y’all be safe🥶
Ian Astbury is one of the most underrated rock vocalists ever. Dude still has the pipes at 60 years old. Someone already mentioned the video. Check it out. Much love from Texas.
I always thought they should have had Ian take Freddie Mercury's place in Queen.
@@cosmictom5255 only if he can be in both bands. The Cult is way too iconic to let go.

Pure facts
I put the blame on the knucklehead that suggested they react to this song without watching the video
@@patrickbateman7369 😂🤣😅
Yeah they are one of those groups who sounds good but should be seen too.
100% agree!!! The video is what got me into the Cult back in the 80s.

And you forget what, for me, is the best song by far in his entire discography: Soldier Blue
The Cult is soooo underrated... Seeing them live is incredible and Ian's voice hasn't changed a bit after all these years...
Saw them a few years ago...this podgy, bearded man grabbed the mic...only when he started to sing did I believe it was Ian Astbury!

The Power and Glory of The Cult. Their album Beyond Good and Evil is one of the best records ever produced. Every song is a banger.

Great choice.
I remember 1991, Desert Storm, 2 cassette tapes and a walkman.
The Cult and the Beatles for 7 months.

I just saw them in concert. It was an amazing show. They sounded great. She Sells Sanctuary is another great song.
And yes they are British. ;-)
She sells Sanctuary is also an amazing Cult Song
I hear the spirit of Jim Morrison in this song !
The Cult KICKS IT !! Awesome live band
Goodness he is so beautiful with his long black hair and big lips. I bought their album and played it the whole summer! Still will play on road trips. ❤
Probably the most underrated bands of the late 80s / early 90s
I”m in my 50s and grew up with this soundtrack - all killer tracks and playing live? Woo-eee!! 🔥🔥🔥
Yesss! One of my favorite bands when I was in college so long ago. You gotta dig deeper in their catalog. Love Removal Machine, Lil Devil, She Sells Sanctuary, Sun King, Peace Dog, Electric Ocean
What a fun reaction!
Asia mentioned his voice
It’s “Jim Morrison” only just a little more nasal twang
He did tour with The Doors he sounded so much like him ✌️🎶
this was a great album I left cassette in my radio to play constantly . or as they say now on repeat lol!
That entire album is FIRE!🔥
It’s a jam! Got to see them open up for Rush at Hara arena in Dayton Ohio
you gotta see this video. he's got the moves and the hair. looks like a hot Native American. YIKES! three more words...Sweet Soul Sister.
I am now 62, when this song played at the clubs everyone hit the floor!
My 3 favorite front men/stage performers Ian Astbury, David Lee Roth and Steven Taylor.
Ya gotta do the cult "SHE SELLS SANCTUARY" and "LOVE REMOVAL MACHINE" "EDIE" also "take the power" live version! 👍
Great Song
Great Album
Great Band
The Billy Duffy Killin it on Guitars. Ian Astbury on Vocals. A Lethal Combination.
So damn good.
Was rockin the Cult back in Kaneohe Bay in 91.
You have to watch the video to this song. Ian Ashbury has more moves and mic standing spinning than can be said.
And Asia....you are a straight up fire woman! Hot as anything. BJ you da man!
Had front row seats to this concert. Mind blown!
Oh hell yes. This brings back some fun memories from high school for me!
Criminally underrated band. Check out Sweet Soul Sister and Love Removal Machine from The Cult
Ian Astbury is amazing! You definitely need to watch the original video of this song and you should check out She Sells Sanctuary next!
Yup, still listen to these guys...great band
One of the best! This is on my “Road Trip” Spotify playlist and I will turn it all the way up! 🥰
This entire album is 🔥!!!
Are they watching the actual video, but we just see the lyrics? They're faces look like they're watching them perform...I really hope so..everyone should watch them perform..Ian and Billy are incredible. I've seen them a couple times, they put on an incredible show
One of my favorite bands i love them since 1983
Singer Ian Ashbury briefly joined the surviving members of the Doors. He is the only singer that could pull it off and replace Jim Morrison.
Um, there was no hiding it... this girl Asia was the Fire woman in This video 🔥 😉 😎
(oh and btw... she's also got a good ear: Because she heard that "southern rock voice", which no other reviewers picked up. Well guess what- way Way back in the early 80's, the original name of the band was The Southern Death Cult.
Straight fact 💯 👌 👍 ~
Old live performance of this where Ian is all over the stage is a must see!
Makes me wonder if the ‘smokestack lightning’ lyric is homage to howlin’ wolf
The CULT are one of the MOST UNDERRATED BANDS everrrr
The (originally called) "Southern Death Cult" kicking ass STILL after decades!!! 😎😎😎
Ian Astbury is a damned GOD on rhe mic and on stage!!! 💯
Man…what a great band …I put the Cult in there with AC/DC & Motorhead ….their biggest most popular songs all have a similar something & they were smart enough to not mess with it too much because it works….no need to mess with the recipe when it tastes good ya know? 🖤y’all be safe🥶
