This is definitely the tip I like most: easy to remember and great impact to make smooth and controlled carves. It helped me improve after years of riding on my Donek Freecarve II. I look at these videos yearly, each time before I go to the slopes. Thanks!
I've been working this drill a lot, it really wakes you up to proper body position. As soon as I reach like this I feel the edge completely lock in. This drill is the key to it all. It will change everything.
I can’t believe it has taken me five years of beating my head against a brick wall trying to get a grip on carving when after watching this vid my world of free carving changed by taking a giant leap forward! Thank you Sean and Lexi!
This was super helpful. I had not ridden an alpine board since the '90s. I took my old 1997 Burton Alp 163 out for a spin today and was struggling with remembering the right body angles and hand positions. I look forward to trying again while using these tips. Thank you.
Tips from Germany : Reduce the wide stances you're riding in the States. Reducing stance width gives the board a better flex line throughout the edges. Even for freeride... Watch the old Craig Kelly stuff.
I am a Japanese alpine snowboarder. I sympathize with the explanation of how to slide. We are doing the same carving turn. In Japan, this is called riding on the waist.
Hey I’ve never snowboarded before but I got a ‘97 burton alp for free and I was wondering if it’s possible to learn on that? Everyone is telling me it would be impossible like learning how to drive for the first time but in an F1 car.
Pfff. Just don't go for extreme angles right away. Maybe dial them to 30 degrees rear, 40 degrees front. If you have hard boot bindings (look like ski boots) try to set them in the "walk" position so they are as flexible as possible. Don't try laying out the carves until you're more comfortable with edge pressure and the downhill "fall line". Sure it'll be kind of awkward but having no previous expectation, it won't feel any worse than if you got on a freeride board.
@Suz I've been teaching since 1992, so whatever. He has an alp, and it's entirely possible to learn snowboarding on a stiffer (but let's face it, an alp isn't that stiff anymore) board w positive angles. There's nothing more dangerous about positive angles than duck angles. In fact, it helps reinforce nose/tail recognition and with the natural initial tendency to drive with hips. They're coming in with 0 experience or expectation, so there's nothing learned to counteract. With your "no no no" attitude you're not the one to be giving advice. Have you tried alpine riding?
@Suz "it's not the right equipment to ... ride on". At all? Seriously? I've never seen anyone gatekeep snowboarding so hard. Are you a skier? Wow. I can't even bother taking anything else you say seriously.
@Suz ok. Last try. Surely you've seen new riders start pivoting tail down the fall line. And maybe because gatekeepers like you push people away from alpine riding you don't see very many, let alone on blacks. You also seem to imply the blues are somehow less enjoyable than black. Who the hell are you to judge? Jesus, let people have fun, fun-killer.

Keep these drills coming. Very helpful and well explained.
Spent the day using this skill at Loveland Pass. Immediate improvement! Thank you Team Donek!
Awesome! I can see this technic also applicable to the soft boot as well. Great stufff
I think this tip is very useful and I’m going to try it next season hopefully. Thank you very much
Thanks for this one- super clear explanation. I think this will help me a ton here in the icy midwest.
