I went from having zero interest (thanks to the over-saturation we've gotten of Krampus over the past few years) to total interest, thanks to two factors: you guys likening it to Gremlins, and telling us the cast/movie is playing it straight. That is how you make a movie like this. Thanks!
It's cool to see Krampus arriving in US-Popculture - as a german kid I had a grandma scaring me into becoming a decent person with tales of Krampus as it is the german way of raising your kids. Tho there seems to be the misconception that Krampus is actually a adversery to Saint Nick/Santa Clause when originally they actually work together in this very extreme version of a Good Cop, Bad Cop Situation - Saint Nick brings the behaved kids their presents while Krampus whips them, stuffs them in his basket and drags them out into the cold never to be seen again....
Here in Austria its the same. In addition to that, especially in the alpine region, we have crampus runs around dec 6th. Its an event where groups of people dress up as crampusses, with handcrafted woodden masks and scare the hell out of little children, while parents are enjoying the spectacle, drinking beer and hot wine. Back in the old days, they used to have chains to hit you when you come too close and they were all drunk...i miss those times...sorry for my bad english
I feel embarrassingly validated hearing Mike and Jay call Tremors a perfect movie, because amongst my friends I am the only one that likes it and they give me shit for it all the time.
15:42 Mike intentionally avoiding letting Jay be right about the time he stopped watching the bad Krampus movie is hilarious. No not 9 minutes, it was 10...or eight😅
I watched this movie because of this review. Not only was it a great film that evoked memories of first seeing Gremlins, Christmas Vacation, and other 80s classics on VHS as a kid but a fantastic movie-going experience as there were only two other people in the theater and they were quiet throughout the whole film.
German here! And yes, Krampus is the henchman of St. Nikolaus (Saint Nichols; wo later bekame the model for Santa Claus blabla). We have like this weird day on December 6th where everyone is like "Do you remember the bishop of Myra who stole gold from his church and gave it to child prostitutes?" "No, I don't! But fuck it: We get some chocolate anyway, fuck yeah." And yes, if you are not nice through the course of the year, Krampus with show up and beat you senseless. So nice ;D
+Genetic Heresy It's a very recent thing (think: last 2 or 3 years) and very much so a created outrage. The irony is that the man behind it, Quinsy Gario, is a notorious racist and 'just as bad' as his perceived enemies. Research has shown that kids do not associate Black Pete with 'black people' nor do they associate the two in a negative manner. In fact, they see Black Pete as a jolly clown like figure who they hold in high regard. Funny that. They have a somewhat same'ish tradition in Belgium and guess what? There's no issues with it whatsoever in Belgium.
I was surprised with how likable the characters were. Was not aware that the Krampus was using a mask- looks like I'll have to look out for that next time. Really enjoyed it, very entertaining!
I thought this would be an average movie from what Jeremy Jahns said, but this review is giving me a fresh new viewpoint to watch it with when I go to the movies.
Glad you guys liked it too. Krampus was fantastic. Had some minor problems, like I thought the father gave up looking for his daughter way too fast near the beginning. He and his brother-in-law heard her screaming and when they got back to the house because the brother in law got bit by the thing under the snow, everyone brushes it off saying things like "she's a tough girl, bla bla bla." As the brother-in-law comments on his near frost bitten hands. A non-movie Dad would have gone back out for at least a second attempt.
I understand this came out about 5 years ago, but I thought I was the only one who actually loved and appreciated this film. It's so unknown still, and and I hope people discover the greatness that is Krampus. To me, it also had elements of Legend in it. The feel of it was fantastic. Glad you both loved it, and brought to your audience's attention. Watch this movie!
I think it may have been "Venture Brothers" that really brought Krampus to the publics attention. At least that is the first time I saw him outside of books about how Santa is different around the world.
Oh, thank the gods you loved it as much as I did. Your review was awesome as sometimes. I was a bit surprised you didn't talk about the ending. That's what really clenched it for me as a favorite holiday movie from now on. The ending was unexpected, didn't pander, wasn't an easy way out, and fit with the tone of the entire film. And speaking of it having the feeling of a good horror movie from the 80's, after watching it I started thinking it was a mix of Gremlins with Poltergeist. Both were PG, scary as hell, and hilarious. Gremlins was intentionally campy, which makes Krampus superior because it pulls of the humour and the scares without the camp. A+
I like going back and trying to pin point the exact moment jay got hot, its Difficult work but someones gotta do it, and for all your viewing pleasure 24:23
Krampus is a Germanic Christmas tradition where a parade of men dressed as krampus, who was Santas assistant, and parade around the streets, where they whip any poorly behaved children. Parents push their misbehaving children into the streets to be whipped. These are still going on today, and it's all in good humor.
Can you imagine if this film was named after something else that's a boss in Isaac, like... I dunno... Dingle, maybe? That movie would be much different.
+rkrokberg Krampus had the hourglass, so every time they'd be about to kill him, he'd pop it and respawn in another room in the house with full health.
My gateway horror movie was John Carpenter's The Thing. I saw it when I was seven. It ruined my childhood for about 2 years. I did learn a lot about really awesome direction and practical effects though n.n
Haha. Did anyone else notice when Jay accidentally made that great joke on accident (7:10), but didn't even notice that he did.... "Michael Dougherty (Brian Singer's Protege), really has an eye for kid actors". Amazing
I'm curious, how much of those effects breaking the VCR were real, and how much were CGI? It was limited enough in scope to come across as smooth, if it was there at all.
Boy, I wish I saw the movie the hack frauds saw, 'cause what I saw was "Poltergeist set at Christmas, with some really out of place Tremors ripoff elements." And as sweet as that sounds, it's pretty terrible. It gets compared to Gremlins, because of the Christmas setting, but there's exactly one scene that feels anything like Gremlins. It really takes much more of its cues from Poltergeist.
Saw this the other night, I was impressed they pulled off a Christmas comedy horror. Not only pulled it off but it was very good. The sound was amazing!
Interesting going back to this video from 4 years ago. One major thing that I notice, is that more current reviews are more sensitive to the critical difference between acting and writing.
When I first saw the trailer I thought it looked interesting, then I thought about how shitty hollywood is and ultimately just decided to wait to pirate it. Glad to hear your guys like it so much, might go see it though Id be surprised if I like it as much as you.
“The director was the protege of Bryan singer”
“The director has a good eye for kid actors”

It's right at the end. 25:50, it's gold!
