Neat video! I grew up in an area where I saw the CNW quite often. I miss them along with Mo-Pac (my favorite childhood railroad), Southern Pacific/Cotton Belt, Rio Grande and MKT.
I grew watching the CNW in Lombard , Illinois in the 60s and 70s. I love trains especially the CNW. Every so often I spot a old CNW rolling stock in CSX trains in Ohio and Liberty , Indiana where I live .
8701 has always been my favorite out of the three! Sucks it was renumbered and repainted! Hopefully the IRM can buy it from the UP some day and restore it to its as-delivered livery!
I'm amazed at how quickly the C&NW livery was erased from Union Pacific's roster. I barely saw any C&NW power as a kid, and when I did it was all AC44CWs. Even Southern Pacific power was more common to see where I lived from 2006 to a few years ago. I have never seen an ex-C&NW gong bell locomotive in UP yellow before, and I just assumed the gong bells were replaced when the units were repainted.
The UP didn’t mess around when it came to erasing the CNW’s image. (unfortunately). They seemed determined to maintain a unified image at all costs. Do you remember how quickly they repainted the entire MKT fleet? It seemed like it happened overnight!
@@CVisionProductions1 Yes, I agree the MKT disappeared very quickly after the ‘88 merger. A lot of the power was worn out in Katy’s final years and I think UP retired many of the locomotives after the merger. I saw my last Green/yellow Katy engine in 1990 (Kirkwood, MO). Even Mo-Pac blue loco’s outlasted MKT by a few years. I have a picture of a Mo-Pac GP-38 that I took in 1993, again in Kirkwood, MO. I still see former Mo-Pac GP units running locals by my house today.
The CNW was our local railroad. The engineers/workers were always friendly. The up guys are just cranky, barely wave or say hi, our local ticket agent(Metra) is just as bad. The up should have left the Dynamic Duo alone, and donated them to the Illinois Railway Museum.
A true shame C&NW and many other railroads no longer exist thanks to UP acquiring them. I don’t hate UP for that, but still it’s disappointing. I would have also wanted to see how the SPSF merger would have worked if things went accordingly, besides that Kodachrome paint on many of those units was one of the best if you ask me. I am at least glad that Burlington northern and Santa Fe merged to avoid possibly getting acquired by UP and are still around as of today. Yes everyone will also miss when those 2 railroads were their own separate selfs, but they made the right decision. Ultimately, some mergers were either for the good or the bad.
It is the state of the industry for sure. Has been since railroads were born. But it would have been nice if we could have at least 10 Class 1's instead of just 6. And when you think about it, only 4 are true US class 1's. This is, of course, including the CP/KCS merger.
I still remember when the CNW acquired their first GE CW4000-8 (Dash 8's) to haul coal drags to and from the Powder River. They would pick them up (pre-merger) from the UP in Nebraska. I also remember that after the Dash 8's started service, people along the Geneva Sub noticed their dishes would vibrate, even some a couple of miles from the tracks.
Ha! That’s an interesting story about the dishes. Those CNW GEs were powerful locomotives! And they looked absolutely great. Thank you for the comment.
VPDM was crazy to hear as now it's SSDM or at least that's what I hear over radio they also seem to meet NPVP at Mankato maybe that's just my luck though and at 24:59 one of my favorite spots Is shown crazy how nothing there has changed not even the rolling stock on these trains great video!
Thank you, Daniel! Yes, VPDM was a regular train back in those days. Those CNW units were running in a counterclockwise loop Proviso-Valley Park-Des Moines-Proviso. They’d arrive in Valley Park on PRVP, which also no longer operates. Anyway, thank you for the nice comment. Enjoy your day!
The two CNW Dash 9s 8646 and 8701 are known as the CNW Twins sadly by 2017 UP Repainted them now as UP 9750 (8646) and UP 9805 (8701) with 9750 being Stored and 9805 as a Rebuilt.
Thank you very much for the update on these locomotives. It’s good to hear that one of them has been rebuilt. Hopefully the other will follow. We appreciate you watching and commenting.
I live in Victoria Minnesota which is not that far from Union Pacific's Ex CNW line though Shakopee Minnesota and I've seen Union Pacific Trains at the Yard in Shakopee Minnesota ES44AC's and SD40-2'S
I wish that Union Pacific had stayed put where they were back in 1980, the same year that the Rock Island Line went out of business and the Milwaukee Road abandoned its lines west of Miles City, MT. UP should have went NO FARTHER EAST than Council Bluffs, St. Joseph and Kansas City. Union Pacific in Wisconsin don't make any since,, as would the Baltimore & Ohio in Jacksonville, Florida. I do like the UP system as it was before 1981. But today, I really loathe the UP system!

Thank you, Chris! The UP certainly became quite the conglomerate in the 80s and 90s, for better or worse. Thanks for watching.
Love seeing the CNW Herald on the front of the locomotives
That was the best place for it, for sure. Glad they went with that for their final paint scheme.
Best Herald ever!
Great video, Not sure what is so attractive about the CNW but I have always admired them.
Thank you! For me personally, it is the railroad I grew up with in Rapid City, SD.
@@CVisionProductions1 I moved to SD in 1996, started for DSRC in 2002 and continue on the line. Nebkota and CNW are my favorites.

Thanks, Paul. Hopefully CNW rolling stock will be around for a few more years.
I also grew up next to the CNW the only thing left is the tracks owned by the UP in Owatonna,Minnesota
Thanks Chris. Appreciate the content. Ahhh…. The, good old days.
Glad you enjoyed it Jim! My pleasure! Thanks again!
That awesome man C&NW early 2000s style
You got it! It was an interesting time in railroading. Thank you!

Maybe someday! It was a neat locomotive.
Let's hope so!
Unfortunately 8701 has been Repainted by UP and is now UP 9805 and Rebuilt

You’re right, Chris. Missouri Pacific colors seemed to last the longest on UP, compared to locomotives wearing WP and MKT colors.
Nice to see action around home.

I agree. I would have liked to see a SPSF merger. I did't like the decision that defeated the merger either.

Sounded like either a Leslie RS3L or a Prime 920.
