    You need a wider pot for your raven zz. For whatever reason, they like ROOM in their pots. I have one not in a bright light situation and it’s putting out new growth because the pot is far wider than the plant. It doesn’t need to be tall or deep-just wide diameter.

    • @amyadwan
      @amyadwan  3 года назад +2

      Thank you for the tips!! Since I’ve filmed this it’s put out a few new growth points so maybe it was just taking a looong time to adjust 😂 Beautiful plant 🥰

      @@amyadwan I don’t know it was just frequently said on plant groups that I was on. When I bought one it was from a local private seller, and the plant was in a shorter than average pot with a much wider base than the actual plant up top above it. I went to check it with a moisture meter probe and the root system is so dense and huge in there that I almost couldn’t get the probe through it. I dug around in there with my finger and realized that despite being in such a huge pot-the root system took up the whole thing. Possibly because it’s a dry climate plant and needs such infrequent watering-the roots like to spread out as far as they can and yet stay shallow to get as much moisture out of the dirt as possible. That’s my take on it anyway.

    • @amyadwan
      @amyadwan  3 года назад +2

      Ahhh that’s really interesting though. For sure when this one needs repotting I’ll think about putting it in a shallow wide pot! Your theory about the roots spreading outwards to be closer to surface moisture sounds spot on as well it makes sense 🙌🏼 Likely mimics it’s natural habitat as well which is always the goal of course

    Most carnivorous plants are ridiculously easy, but they dont tell you how to make it that way. I buy carnivourous plant soil, and put them in deep pots. In terms of care, just sit the pot in water on a sunny windowsill, (they are a bog plant and appreciate the pot being sat in water as much as possible) and feed every few months. I feed dried mealworms for wild birds, but you could always use flies! trigger the trap to close, remember that it will open again if it doesn't think its caught anything so just squeeze the trap lightly after about 10-15 minutes, it will seal super tight eventually, like its vacuum packed it's dinner, that's when you know it's eating. For winter put the pot in a sealed bag in the shed. That's literally all you need to do. My fly trap, and pitcher plant lived out the winter bagged up in the fridge last year and have come back really strong!

      Thank you so much for all the tips!! I have a terrarium now with some carnivorous plants and doing a bit better with them. Interesting that you feed them with mealworms, I haven’t heard that before!

    • @troublingleaf
      @troublingleaf Год назад

      Good to hear about the terrariums, I love them. It's only the fly trap I'm able to feed with mealworms. I have tried feeding the pitcher plant on them, but it didn't digest it, but maybe I just haven't figured out how to ring the dinner bell.

      they need need a lot of light to actually grow, rather than survive, which is what the plant does in most houses.

    The Black Fang is GREAT !!!!!!!
    About your Black Cardinal I am not sure you have correct plant or correct name. Black cardinals are "bleeding" easily, if you will scratch a leaf just a little, there will be a bloody river coming from the leaf.
    Happy Halloween!

      Thankfully it’s still growing for me a year later! 🤣 Thank you ✨🤍 Yes you’re probably right, it doesn’t bleed like that when it’s cut at all. Not sure what it is then! Happy Halloween ✨🦇🎉

    First sorry for the book, I've just come across your page, great job! For my Carnivorous plants, I have experienced that mine do best in spagnum moss, with a watering globe (mine like to stay pretty wet consistently) and I use distilled water. I've used tap, tap that has sat out, purified, spring and distilled as well as an array of potting mediums, it's been a journey but any nutrients outside of bugs and an occasional mist of orchid food (I just use Miracle Grow spray orchid food mist) every few months causes my baby pitchers to crisp up and not develop. I also have near a humidifier because mine really enjoy high humidity. Hopefully this helps on your carnivorous plant journey! 🙂

      Not at all thank you for taking the time to write the comment! 🥰 Really helpful tips! The one in this video did unfortunately rot out 😂 I have a nepenthes now however that’s doing quite well. I’m using rainwater for it at the moment. When I build up the courage to try Venus fly trap again I will be using your tips 😂 Many thanks for this! 🥰✨🤍

    To keep the Venus Fly Trap alive use a mixture of Pete moss and sand, water only with either distilled water or rain water. Feed with live bug to only one head monthly. When watering mist or put a tray of water underneath.

    For the Venus fly tray, I bottom water it in distilled water, give it bright indirect/direct light (I have it at a window box so the sun does hit it at certain times of the day), and to insure it survives its winter hybernation, try to make sure it eats at least one or a few flies/bugs. When repotting use sphagnum moss that doesn’t have fertilizer, to insure that the moss doesn’t have fertilizer before I put the plant it in, I pick out every fertilizer orb I find and double check, then soak and rinse out the moss 3-5 times in clean distilled water. I’m sure they sell soil already free of fertilizer for carnivorous plants somewhere but in case you already have sphag moss and wanna use that instead.

      Thank you so much for the tips!! The one in this video had already died hahaha but I assure you if I try again I’ll use some of these tips 🙌🏼 Do you find it dies back completely when it hibernates or no? Also thanks for watching! ✨

      @@amyadwan no problem, loved the video! Sorry to hear yours didn’t make it! It took me a while to get the hang of this plant too. Mine only died back to mostly small leaves. I have heard of some that die back completely but come back in the spring as long as the bulb and roots are still alive. Not sure if it depends on the climate zones, might be worth looking into. It still likes to stay moist during its dormant season. The great thing about once getting the hang of it, is that they grow pups that you can propagate! Been also hearing that some other carnivorous plants are easier than Venuses such as pitcher plants or Mexican butterwort if you are ever curious of other options! Hope this helps if you do try again! Good luck! 💜
