An example of a legitimate reason would be certain dog breeds like pugs that are known to have curled tails can have spinal damage and nerve pain because of the tail curling up and pinching Nerves in it

While I personally prefer the adorable look of floppy dog ears, a lot of Doberman owners have there ears changed for intimidation. Similar to how Boxers have their tails cut and pit-bulls have their ears clipped.
