    I personally love this film. There is a lot of intelligent writing. Making references to Mary Shelley (creation of Frankenstein), Percy Shelley (Ozymandias), and Lord Byron (David mistaking the poem to him), references to Dante, quotes from Paradise Lost by Milton--not to mention the significance of Wagner's 'Entrance to Valhalla'. The story is truly an inverted Paradise Lost. This can be boring to some but it contributes to themes that just are not talked about enough.

    From what I understand of the public hate, people were upset that Prometheus wasn't a classic Alien film. So Scott scrapped his original plans for the Engineers and made Covenant more of a classic Alien film. And people complained "what happened to the Engineers though etc" ... he couldn't win.

    • @refurbishedtechpriest9076
      @refurbishedtechpriest9076 17 дней назад

      @@thatkidnamedjoe3374 Wrong. He couldn't win over the audience because of poor execution coupled with the pretentious pseudo-philosophical writing. While I didn't think "Prometheus" was too bad, to me it was mostly a pretty movie to look at but that's it. Most of the cast aren't particularly likeable or memorable, it asks a lot of big questions but doesn't really give any answers, and it can't seem to decide if it wants to be its own thing or an ALIEN prequel. In the end, "Prometheus" is a movie that tries to come off as "deep" but in reality its about as shallow as a puddle.
      As for "Alien Covenant", it did everything that "Prometheus" did wrong while doing nothing right. The writing was beyond terrible, the characters are as stupid as they are forgettable and underdeveloped, and it just doesn't bring much of real value to the table. Hell, you could add the flaw that it just abandons the "Prometheus" storyline for a half-baked "ALIEN" plot. I know its said that FOX and Ridley Scott put out "Alien Covenant" because of claims that fans complained about there not being any xenomorphs in "Prometheus", but honestly I call bullsh!t on that. Granted I don't have eyes everywhere, but speaking from my own experience that particular complaint was very rare and seems to stem from the confused marketing... I.e.: "Prometheus" was supposed to be its own thing yet the trailer had distinct ALIEN sounds to it that'd suggest a proper prequel. What complaints I DID see a lot of were people complaining about the shallow and pretentious writing, the characters making really dumb choices, characters just not being all that well-written period... And these issues carried over into "Alien Covenant".

    Prometheus recieved extremely mixed reviews, a lot of them favoring the negative, so Ridley Scott gave people more of the traditional alien stuff they had wanted with this one. There was supposed to be one more prequel film after this that Scott wanted to make, which would have finally bridged the gap leading up to his original Alien film, but this simply didn't do well enough critically or financially.

    The next film in the prequel trilogy was going to be called Alien Awakening and was meant to go right into Alien. It was meant to be the war between the engineers, David and the xenomorphs. Obviously during the war one of the xenomorphs gets on board of the engineers ships with eggs and a facehugger makes the engineer crash land onto LV426 (orginal Alien 1979 planet). The scene on the ship with the Neomorphs was probably the most tense I had felt while watching through the Alien films for the first time in preparation for Romulus. From the back bursting, to the utter fear exuding in Amy Seimetz' entire performance, to the explosion of the ship, to the double thronged Neomorph attack, etc. It's just perfect. Then Romulus comes and outdoes it in every way. But that moment basically sold the whole film for me. The rest was great, too, but that was the best.
    Edit: I'm glad I didn't watch this movie without closed captioning. It would've gaslit the shit out of me.

    I saw Prometheus and Covenant in theater. I will be honest and say that upon first watch, the collective negativity that I experienced and saw from other moviegoers was that the death of the Engineers and Elizabeth Shaw at the hands of David was a sort of let down. Prometheus left us wanting to know the origins of the Engineers and their reasons for wanting to kill humans, but the whole story was hijacked by David and his god complex. I’ve watched a few times since then and have grown to like and appreciate it, but the Engineers story was fascinating to me and cut short. Why did they want to kill us? Did they create us and how? Now we’ll never know 🥺

    • @refurbishedtechpriest9076
      @refurbishedtechpriest9076 17 дней назад

      Scott said why in interviews. Evidentially they weren't happy with how we were developing, but decided to send an emissary to set us straight. Unfortunately these guys called the Romans came along and crucified the emissary. I'm not kidding, Scott wanted this emissary to be Jesus in this universe and his being killed is why they want us dead.

  • @ThisIsMyFullName
    @ThisIsMyFullName 17 дней назад +2

    The reason people don't like Prometheus and Covenant is because they expected a monster movie, but what they got was a more sophisticated film about evolution and the god complex. That's also why the new Jurassic Park films are really just bad monster movies, while the first Jurassic Park had a deeper underlying theme revolving around the negative human effect on nature. I love Ridley Scott for keeping his vision despite what I'm sure was a lot of pressure to create another "Aliens movie". He tried to please everyone with Covenant by bringing the Xenomorphs back, but most people are sadly not that interested in deep sci-fi films today. That's also why Blade Runner 2049 (2017) failed at the box office, despite arguably being one of the best sci-fi films released in the last 20 years. The horror/monster-movie genre is much more popular than the sci-fi genre.

The engineers create life and this was one of their creations. David wiped them out using the ship him and shaw were on basically because he wanted to play god. David also didnt create the xenomorph, he copied the ideas from the engineers to make them in his own image. I'm someone who appreciates Prometheus as the years go by. Alien: Covenant was the first Alien film I saw in theaters. I remember being impressed with its gore and how more action-packed the film was during the first half compared to that of Prometheus. However, I didn't like the second half, particularly the David parts. I understand that David was the main villain, setting things in motion, infecting crew members with the black goo to see what it does. I know he put things in motion to create the Xenomorphs. However, to find him being the one physically creating the Xenomorphs from scratch really soured the film for me. All this time, instead of the Engineers could have used the Deacon to engineer Xenomorphs, it was just an android all this time. It just felt like the entire Alien universe had gotten a lot smaller, that these species were created by an android instead by another alien species. Also, Covemant didn't do well at the box office, it left plot holes. Like why did the Engineers originally want to invade us and destroy us? How did they come in contact with the Xenomorphs? How does this all set up to the first Alien film? I don't think Covenant is a bad movie by any means, but it's a letdown from Prometheus in my opinion.

      David didn't create the Xenomorphs, he just used the Engineers Black Goo to make his own version of them. You can see a mural in Prometheus of the Xenomorph, implying that the Engineers created them a very long time ago. Think of the Black Goo as being the Xenomorphs in fluent form, David just used Shaw's dna to make his own. Kinda like building an Ikea furniture without any manual.

    I thought it was ok. I really wanted Shaw to be the new Ripley of the series - at least I thought it was heading there. It just sucks cause she never got her questions answered.

    For me personally, my mixed review comes from two places. First, it almost totally throws away what Prometheus started. I wasn't a fan of the Engineer story as presented, but it seems like because a lot of people expressed similar thoughts they just decided to trash any of the world building they did attempt in the last one. Engineer home planet? Shaw? Just wipe them away. Second, I dislike knowing that David created the aliens as we know them. It seems rather anticlimactic. It's not a bad movie though. It does have many things going for it- the cast is good, Fassbender is amazing, the movie's beautiful. Character actions feel less dumb than Prometheus, *mostly*. I do understand the difficulty though; to make an Alien movie feel fresh and keep people happy. High hopes for Romulus!

    I think what people didn't like is was the human factor involved in the creation of the Xenomorphs. David was a human creation, then Alien indirectly they also are so.
    I guess for many the idea of "a mysterious parasite species" was better.

      A lot of the haters, not all, but a lot seem to be Aliens fans in particular who wish it was just humans vs bugs. But there are people who have legitimate gripes with the writing choices regardless of lore direction.

    40:48 Thing is, its probably not the general public that didn't like it. For the most part, when i spoke to ppl who were just casual fans, they loved it and though it was a good scifi horror. But the issue came down to fans who were already questioning the value of Prometheus, and then the Alien franchise has an extremely opinionated fandom. Here are a few reasons why people disliked the movie at the time. (I personally loved it Btw)
    - Killing off Elizabeth Shaw off screen. An off-screen death can be annoying, and for the fandom it was really irritating to them to see a character they were hoping to follow more of, be dead just like that
    - David essentially engineering the Xenomorph... Many of the lore *experts* and devout fans felt like it was a bit of an insult to have David be the one to basically create them. (Although to be fair, fans didnt quite understand that it wasnt David who made them, he just helped speed along the process... But most people can't critically think and make that distinction)
    - There was a lot of criticism about the look of the Xenomorph, specifically that there wasn't as much practical effects like the original films (Which once again is quite stupid, considering the visual effects were quite good compared to something like Alien 3, which had horrible CGI)
    - There was a lot of criticism about character choices. Often times fans and critics will call out 'Stupid' decisions made by the characters of a movie. In Covenant, there were decisions made hastily by characters and many people felt like the ppl were just being stupid.... (Once again, I'd argue the people in Covenant were far less qualified to deal with the situation. They were just colonists, looking for a planet to establish a settlement)
    Infact, the characters in Prometheus were a little more stupid since technically there were actual scientists on the team. The crew of Covenant were just regular travellers, looking for a place to live.
    These are some of a few different critques made by fans. I would say a lot has to do with unrealistic expectations, overly critical opinions, bandwagon opinions, and unfair judgment of the story and characters. I'm not saying people don't have the right to have an opinion, but i think that in the case of Alien: Covenant It was ALOT better than people gave it credit for. At least if people were to be a little more objective, they would see that movie added alot more to the Alien franchise. Its a shame ppl had to criticize it to death and make it seem like it was the worst. It was far from the worst movie in the franchise. But that's what happens when you live in an era where everyone has an opinion :P

      What I feel like would be nice to have - would be having a promise that we are getting a flashback to Shaw and David and her death and transformation - in a third movie. Like this off-screen death is great for the suprise and tension of the actual movie plot of Covenant - but it would be nice to have some things finished in a proper manner.
      It's kinda the same thing with Prometheus, where the whole movie lost a lot because of all the scenes with Engineer talking with the crew got cut.
      It turns intriguing sci-fi that wants to debate some philosophical questions about human origin and meaning of life itself, into a regular monster-mash. Covenant at least does it better with how David is depicted in it.
      Also for me personally - it always read as Aliens always existed, it's just that David unlocked and found them again. Kinda like broken DNA of Engineers created life and humans on Earth - the idea for Xenomorph always was locked within the black goo. He didn't invent the wheel, he found what was lost, with some extra improvements.

    Fantastic movie.
    Prometheus I recall also had negative reviews because it "wasn't an Alien movie" and I think ppl felt like it was false advertising because the whole point was to "explain" the origin and purpose of the Alien, but it left people only with more questions (that and basically retconned alot of established lore in-comics of the series).
    Covenant meanwhile got panned for "caving to criticism" by making this a more traditional alien movie. Also I think alot of people were dissatisfied with what happened to Shaw and how, while this movie gives us a potential explanation of the alien (aka David created it experimenting with the virus and human DNA), it also answeres borderline none of the questions Prometheus left us with (such as the engineers potentially already knowing about or having created the xenomorphs before-hand).

    The general public didn't like this film because they were trying to see an Alien movie in Prometheus and Covenant, while the underlying theme and structure was more like Blade Runner -- God's creation sets out on a journey to see their creator. When they finally meet the god, they ask: "Why you created us?", "Why did you make us this way, mortal?". But the creator doesn't give them satisfactory answers, so they kill the god. You see. It's Blade Runner. They should have tried to see the underlying theme instead of the Alien trope.

    I think it's a good movie. Perhaps the fans didn't like the retcon that the Xenomorphs were created by David. I can understand because I always felt it was better for them to remain mysterious. To a certain extent it's still a mysterious species because we don't know where the Engineers got the pathogen from.

    It’s popular to hate on films in modern media, and so much of the Alien franchise has been recycled and obviously the sequence with the Neomorphs in Act II drew a lot of ire, but I for one very much enjoyed the film. I think it was an excellent lore building entry into the series!

    i loved this and Prometheus. I think it may have to do with just how well loved Alien and Aliens were and how badly received 3 and 4 were that people had higher hopes. Additionally people heard prequel and hoped this one would have connect immediately to Alien which we do/dont cause it def takes some years before we get to the time period of Alien. Love your reaction and how excited you were with this one. I saw this in theaters and was probably the only hyped one in there [wasnt that many ppl in there tho so thats expected]. Are you gonna try to get the Alien popcorn bucket too?

    I love this movie! It’s so ridiculous how much hate it’s gotten really. Imo it’s one of those movies where if you go into it without knowing/expecting too much &/or know how it’s received by others…you’ll enjoy it sooo much more! It’s really just frustrating when stuff like that happens…also, when it comes to such movies, I often find that the most outspoken and hard core haters are the ones that tend to get all butt hurt when “their” version/original version of certain story beats and lore are changed/altered/retold in some way, as if they wrote/created the shit themselves 😅🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️I mean like seriously…get over it my dudes! As imo if the original person that came up with the plot &/or origins or just lore in general is the same person who is now altering it or framing certain things differently like Scott has done here…who the hell are you to be upset or offended to the point that you are basically refusing to accept the new lore…are you really a fan? If the man says that this is the story…it’s the damn story, stfu!😂😉👍

    I have a feeling there was meant to be a movie between this one and Prometheus, because there's a lot of concept art that expand more on Shaw and David and the questions left behind by Prometheus. Don't take my word for it, it's just a vague notion that I remember, but I think that had something to do with the negative reaction. Honestly, it's one of my favourite Alien movies. Really felt like a return to form. But people wanted more Prometheus and less Alien from what I remember.

    I actually like this movie BUT them scrapping what happened in the previous film just felt weird I definitely wanted more time with Shaw she felt like our new Ripley, and the whole faith and meeting your maker was actually very interesting to me. I also have a love hate with the ending but the moment when you realize it’s David instead of Walter because, she only talks to Walter about the cabin at the lake so until that’s revealed we are just assuming it’s Walter is definitely a “oh shit” moment.
