Invented in 1877 by Thomas Edison
-First method of recording and playing sound.
1887 - invention of Gramophone
invented by Emile Berliner in Washington D.C.
-First invention to start recording on flat discs. -Originally made of glass, then zinc and eventually plastic.
Mar 26, 1948 - Invention of LP's
First invented in 1948.
-Also known as ‘the album
-Many different sizes: 33 1/3”, 7”, 12” and 10”
Mar 28, 1962 - invention of Multitrack RecordinInvented in 1962, experiments started for a multitrack recorder in late 1940’s by Les Paul.
-Artist such as the Beatles and the Beach boys used the multitrack recorder.

Invented in 1963 by Phillips.
-Became the most popular form of music media in several years.

1979 - Cassette Tape Player (Walkman)
-The first of Sony’s portable cassette tape players went on sale on July 1st, 1979. -cost $150.
1982 - First CD (Compact Disc)
The first CD ever made was pressed on August 17, 1982. -The first CD pressed was ABBA’s ‘The Visitors’ album.
Nov 11, 1984 - introduction of Discman
Invented in 1984 by Sony.
-Took over the Walkman. -Release in Japan and valued at 49,800 yen.
Sep 7, 1995 - First Recordable CD's
Invented by Hewlett Packard in September 1995 -Took 3 years to overtake LP’s as the top selling music.
May 14, 1997 - First Mp3 Player
First successful Mp3 player was released in 1997, although investigation into Mp3 technology began in 1987.
Jun 9, 1999 - NAPSTER was launched
Released in 2000.
-Allowed people to easily share their song files with each other.
-Led to a drop in recording sales.
-Shut down by court order in 2001.
Oct 23, 2001 - iPod released
Released in 2001 by Apple.
-Over 7 years, 14 different versions of the iPod have been introduced.
-Began with the ‘Classic’
Apr 28, 2003 - iTunes
Released in 2003 to accompany the iPod. -Allows you to manage audio and video on your computer. iTunes
Pandora launched in September 2005, and enabled custom radio stations based on listeners’ favorite music, indicated by a thumbs-up or thumbs-down button. It was one of the first “freemium models,” allowing users to listen for free with advertisements or pay a monthly fee for no advertisements.
SoundCloud was then established in 2007, allowing listeners to hear music and be able to upload their own tracks onto the platform.
Spotify came in 2008 and has since become “the world’s most popular audio streaming subscription service with 299 [million] users,” according to their Company Info page.

Recently watched a blacksploitation movie called Detroit 2000, at some point in the film a character uses a portable music player, I am sure it was Phillips, but this was in 1973, absoltely baffled me as I had always thought the personal music player was invented by Sony in 79.
