I had to rewind the portion where you go get the vampire cape 3 times to make sure that the musical interlude was in fact "Duck Tales" and my ears weren't deceiving me, and I properly laughed out loud.😂 This is what makes you one in a million on RUclips. Please never change. Never, ever change. 😂

I first saw the Mysterians when I was -- what? ten years old at the local Matinee -- which would now be around 57 years ago -- in all of its wide-screen 35mm glory and it was fantastic -- the village collapsing into the earth, Mogera crashing through the hillside -- "Everyone cross the bridge, this is our line of defense!" It's all permanently impressed on my brain from that time -- it really is the stuff that movies were made for.
It's one of those movies that you should, A) Watch on a big screen and B) Watch when you're ten years old.

You got it right. The Mysterians was my very scifi-move. As I was just 7, my dad took myself and a friend to the show. The two boys were astounded by everything on the big screen. It stuck with me right up to my current age of 74. I have both DVDs and watch them at least once a year. Best of luck to you.

I really appreciated your effort to review "The Mysterians" given the quality of the videos you were using. I had the opportunity see The Mysterians as a ten-year old with my next door neighbor who was 12, at a local theater where my Mom left us to our own devices. First theater experience on my own -- what a life changing event! Movie was clear, effects were superb, and it really left a profound impact on me. Wish someone would restore it and distribute it in similar fashion as "Battle in Outer Space". Thanks again for tracking down whatever print you finally used and providing an excellent review under very adverse conditions. My belief is that "The Mysterians" would be considered a much better film if it were restored to its "as-was" condition. Good job!!

The problem with Strontium-90 is that in humans the body mistakes it for calcium and incorporates the radioactive material into your bones. There it sits for years releasing radioactive decay (Bata particles which are easily stopped outside the body) directly into your body causing cancer.

It's interesting to see Battle In Outer Space in the context of being a lifelong devotee of Gerry Anderson. I've watched Fireball XL5, Supercar, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons, Joe 90, UFO, Space: 1999 etc. I love them all. I never knew these early Japanese films existed until recently. I always assumed he was the ground breaker in this type of model work but it seems these films pre-date Gerry Anderson by years. I still love his stuff but now I suspect these films may have given him some ideas...

I think it was wise to start off the video explaining the difficulties you’ve experienced finding a movie and not trusting the internet after they “gotcha” with the Mysterians. Ouch. It shouldn’t be this difficult to find some of Toho’s films in good quality, heck any film with a small following for that matter. I agree, presentation can make or break a film, an example I have is 1986 The Wraith. When The Wraith released in theaters the audio was not synced up properly and got poor reviews and was eventually forgotten… recently it got a blu ray release and now it has a cult following.
Your time dedicated to making this review is appreciated and I think it made for a better video in the end. Here’s hoping we get a Toho classics collection with ALL of their films. I haven’t seen either film so have access to the them would be nice.
    Also, cape Weislberry looks sinister…

Nice review of both films. Saw both in the theatre when they came out. Recently secured a dvd (Tokyo Shock) of The Mysterians (Japanese and English versions). Both are fun films. The Mysterians deserves to be remade by Toho. in 1977 The War In Space was released and it was touted to be the third part of the trilogy. Many of these films had 2 English dubs. One by the American distributor and a different one done in (I believe) Hong Kong for the International English release.

Ha ha ha I had to laugh because when I was VERY young I saw these two movies together as a double feature. I might have seen it with my brother because I certainly was too young to go to the movies alone. For many, many years I thought the two movies were one movie and only learned recently they were two movies. And they certainly aren't related except perhaps they used some of the same sets. Thank you.
And comparing the original with the American version, you are right. At a very young age I saw Godzilla with Raymond Burr, when I learned about the Japanese original I managed to see it in Japanese with English subs. Since then I've watched the original with subs whenever possible .

Well, seeing the clips and frames from THE MYSTERIANS you showed certainly proves it was a film-watching challenge of the first order---and, just as certainly, a challenge you well-met! I'm not sure i would've had the dedication to stick through it that you did, knowing---having seen this film on its original super-colorful MGM release---how far removed the dvd you had was from what came out of Toho Studios back in the day! I really enjoyed all the clarity you gave to this blurred material, as well as the "live-performance" (?--not sure what you'd call it, but it was quite amusing) you provided---your off screen musical-simulations while cape-hunting---and just the good old-fashioned "get it done" in spite of the eyeball and edit challenges you faced! Both THE MYSTERIANS and BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE feature some of the all-time best in visual and special effects spectacle to come from Toho, none of which came easy for their crews. Toho had just wanted to make BATTLE as another film in the same vein as THE MYSTERIANS as a follow up to the boxoffice success of the latter, a fact which became thought of as a "sequel", which, clearly, it wasn't/isn't.
Thanks for covering these very colorful SF-fantasy Japanese epics! Maybe you'll get a chance to see THE MYSTERIANS in its full glory at some point, and any other, newer thoughts would be great to hear....But maybe, after this assault on the optic nerves, you may not be wanting to see or even think about those Mysterian chaps for a while?

I find not only your reviews, but all the context you provide, from your meticulous, sometimes convoluted, frustrating search for the best version of a film, to observations made by family members you watched with, equally fascinating and informative. It’s all good, Jerome; not just good, but utterly delightful. It’s what makes your reviews feel so uniquely personal and fun. I’m only sorry you weren’t around in 1957 to see “The Mysterians” in its original glory, as I did at age 10. But that would’ve meant sacrificing your present youth only to learn that, in the end, you probably would still have chosen the more grandiose and epic, “Battle in Outer Space”, as the better film. I wouldn’t be surprised if a young George Lucas was inspired watching the thrilling space battle scenes of that movie. As to the Mysterians coming to Earth to interbreed with our women, a recurring theme in this genre, I always chuckle at what Carl Sagan pointed out about how differently evolved from us beings from another planet would be: “We could sooner mate with a petunia than with an extraterrestrial”.

Your singing is quite nice! I don't even sing in church because I am afraid everyone would stare at me like they did Barney Fife.
The Internet Archive should have a widescreen copy of the Japanese version of THE MYSTERIANS. I first saw it on TV back in 1980 on TBS and for many years, that version was the only one I was familiar with. I taped it in the late 80s and it looked better than the dark copy you saw (sorry you experienced that). As for being a sequel, both THE MYSTERIANS and BATTLE have a characters named "Dr. Adachi" and "Etsuko Shiraishi". Also, the name "Joji Atsumi" is sort of incorporated into the name of Ryo Ikebe's character, "Ichiro Katsumiya". One thing about the Japanese version of MYSTERIANS is that you can hear two voices coming from Yoshio Tsuchiya. One is the Japanese voice and the other is a buzzing sound, supposedly the alien's actual voice.

Very tangentially, your experience reminded me of my attempt to watch the Czech film UCHO (1970) (a great movie BTW). There exists on YT a good transfer in a poorly synched German dub, and a muddy low rez edition with the original Czech soundtrack, neither of which has English subtitles. I had to play the German version on mute, have the Czech version playing a separate window and a fan translation of the script scrolling on Notepad. It was a struggle to keep everything even slightly synced. What we do for art....

The things that you will go through to get your story.I hope that your editor appreciates what a dedicated reporter you are.
I got access to Battle in Outer Space on tubi. The dubbed version. In this case I think that the ominous alien voice that warns
and controls did not sound ominous enough. The Japanese was probably more intimidating.I enjoyed the film although it
never soared like an eagle.I kept wanting to know what was going to happen next but I don't know if the story has enough
unique elements to stick in my long term memory. Not like the moment when you left the room to don a cape. That Godzilla
plushy was grinning from ear to ear.I thought he was going to jump up and start puttin' on the ritz.Your cape.Just yesterday,
I was watching a goofball movie called Rockula 1990.Toni Basil played a vampire mother.Singing and dancing like a youngster.
Took me back to that moment. The window wiper aliens.Thats what the new Star Wars movies needed. What is it with that
astronaut that keeps losing gravity?Nobody else has this problem.I thought that zero gravity did not discriminate.
Your trials and tribulations have resulted in a very entertaining review.Jamaica Inn was successful at the box-office.

Finally got around to watching this video, what made you decide to sing the Duck Tales Theme Song while getting your vampire cape? That was a delightful interlude. Have you seen the old version or new version of Duck Tales. I used to watch the new version of Duck Tales with my youngest sister when it first came out.

Ha, nothing in particular. It had just been stuck in my head all day, which happens sometimes. :) I don't think I was even aware there was a new version of Duck Tales until a few months ago, so I'm definitely only familiar with the old one.

I’d never heard of the Mysterians before your review and it seems like a worthy watch, Battle in Outer Space is a little more appealing to me though, great reviews, really interesting to hear the story of how your review came to be. I want a vampire cape :( lol, if Aliens landed and said come on board I’d say not a chance! No way! Aliens: we want you to wear a vampire cape, Me : why didn’t you lead with that? I’m in! Lol, if I had a vampire cape I’d wear it randomly around the house, answer the door dramatically with Good Evening! Bela Lugosi accent. walk dramatically holding the cape just under my eyes, open the fridge with a hiss, the light! Lol

I was curious to know if the film was available on a major service in Europe, I googled (The M+++++++s Japanese version streaming), odd way to word it. I’ve attempted to add this reply multiple times so I’ll chance not adding the films name lol. I happened upon a site with a decent version, Japanese titles with English subs. I own both of these movies and have watched them a couple of years ago. I liked both of them with the edge going to Battle in Outer Space, if memory serves me correctly. I have the Tokyo Shock/Media Blasters DVD of the Mysterians which has the 88-minute original Japanese version. It's good quality. It's available for purchase, but you're going to have to fork over some dough to get it. I have Battle in Outer Space on Blu-ray; however it came as a double feature with the H-Man (as a separate disc). Maybe your library has this too since it has the other. This is also directed by Honda and is another movie with radiation gone wrong. I like this one too, and hopefully you'll check it out. There are still a couple other Honda sci-fi movies you haven't seen yet. Some others you will not be able to see - probably - because you are going to have to pay money for. The Human Vapor and Gorath are both good ones to see - along with the H-Man.

Is anyone going to mention "? and the Mysterians," the 1960s rock band that took its name from the movie? The late Alex Trebek would add, "and the Mysterians" if someone just put a "question mark" as a Final Jeopardy response.
