Listening to the two of you, it sounds like they were going to do that modern, girlboss, "I'm not like other Cinderellas" story, but when they got scooped by that dreadful Camilla Cabello/James Corden Amazon movie, desperately tried to rewrite into something else and couldn't find a new angle to justify its own existence.
One of the things I was warned about creating art is that you should never name your creation something that makes for an easy reviewer pun. "Bad Cinderella: It sure is!" etc, etc, etc. It's just a bad omen
There was a movie in the 2000's, which name could be translated as "The Best Movie". The people behind it claimed that the name was chosen to ensure the positive reviews, because nobody could say anything bad about it with a name like that. The thing is, people found a way 😅
My (not literally) older brother finally got cast in his first broadway show. I was so happy, I sobbed. This guy introduced me to theater. Because of him, I joined theater camps every summer, started auditioning for commercials, etc. My life is literally on a different track because I met him. He's in the ensemble of Bad Cinderella. I'm so incredibly proud. I'm also like.... so sad for him. This cast is working incredibly hard, but the material?? (side eye). Ultimately I know that this material will look amazing on his resume and that he deserves to be up on that stage, I'm just worried about how long the show will run
Genuinely sending you and him the best of wishes. Hopefully either another ensemble finds a spot for him and scoops him up and/or he’s able to find a project he really loves and is happy with!
Congratulations to him! Just because the show has issues doesn’t make his achievement any less important. With a Broadway musical credit on his CV, he’ll have better opportunities. And you can get some inside goss (the hot tea, if you will) from him as a cast member.
literally! I've seen so many people saying it's disrespectful to the performers to criticise the material even though I'd agree that the performers give it their all, wishing him all the best in his career!

I noticed this as you mentioned the difference between the two Cinderella costumes how West End is sort of a UK gothic vibe... how did I never realize that her coat is made of a Tartan material? So yeah, it makes Mickey's call out the Broadway Cinderella is sort of Janis of Mean Girls esthetic all the more clear that the costume designer is aiming for a sort of... counterculture Cinderella vibe but has adapted the look from UK culture to US culture. Which... also says a lot about how they view America counterculture as an early 2000s Disney channel movie best friend.
@@timeforlaurynsopinion5138 or even 80s metal. The costume designers needed to reevaluate their ideas for counterculture design. It's never going to be the style of the wacky best friend in a 2000s Disney Channel sitcom
My theory on the broadway Cinderella costume is that there are so many normal people who THINK and CLAIM that they're alt or rebellious but really arnt and that this bad Cinderella is for them and not ACTUALL alt or rebellious folks
I think ALW’s time passed LONG ago. I’m going to Bad Cinderella next week only because the lead is Latina and that happens so rarely. I knew it would be bad, but I thought it would be like &Juliet bad where it’s still fun. Now I’m dreading it. As for this possibly being ALW’s last show - I agree with Mickey Jo, mostly because people like ALW are wildly stubborn and egotistical. I don’t think he will ever try to adapt with the times or accept that his time has passed.
He parted company with Cameron mackintosh after the phantom closing debacle. Covid shut down that show and they lost a ton of money. Cameron mackintosh was control freak and perfectionist. After phamton shut that was the end of that partnership.
&Juliet is only cheesy, but it is SUCH FUN! Especially when those jukebox songs are somehow nostalgic. It is also hilarious - I am sad it is ending in London. Hope you enjoy Bad Cinderella though. It is a bit cringy, but I still had some fun but would not particularly see it again.
if i had a nickel every time someone in 2022 made a musical version of cinderella where she wasnt like other girls, i’d have two nickels but still weird that it’s happened twice
I took my father to see Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat at Sydney's Capitol Theatre, Andrew Lloyd Webber's legacy is thorny and complicated but when you see a good version of one of his shows it's magic on the stage with production values galore. I'm not sure I'm going to rush out to see Bad Cinderella but I am fascinated by where this fits in the vast scope of musical history.
Agreed! I think Starlight Express is definitely Andrew Lloyd Webber's weakest show (and the man has had a lot of clunkers), but I saw it on tour when I was a kid. Maybe it's the childhood nostalgia, maybe it's because it was one of the early nights in a new city, but fuck was it memorable in a good way. Can't say the man doesn't try and he does at least sometimes (like 5% of the time) respect the other aspects of theatre lol
i had a similar experience in melbourne! my nanna took my mum to see phantom 17 years ago so when it came to the arts centre this year my mum took me. there were so many mothers and daughters our age there and i think a lot of them were probably having the same full-circle moment we were. it's strange and almost sad that alw somehow went from that to.......this.

LOVE this collab! I've been riveted by Mickey Jo's coverage of (Bad) Cinderella. This musical has broken my brain... just HOW the book could be so bad? How would I fix it? I've seriously spent HOURS thinking about it lolllll. As a pro-writer and someone who has done classic romance retellings, I remain baffled how anyone thought the story, as-is, was working. (I do think I have a pretty good grasp of how to "fix" Bad Cinderella while retaining some of the better songs, but it would be a gut job/near-total rewrite to make it work...) And the biggest mystery: how much did ALW tinker with/force-guide Fennel's book? I remain flabbergasted that it came from her...
Does your rewrite include the godmother orchestrating the entire thing, from Charming's disappearance onwards, to get the two princes where they need to be by the end of the show? Because if she's secretly a benevolent force working behind it all to ensure that Charming marries his beau rather than some random woman, and that the totally unsuited for royal life Sebastian can run off with Cinders, the plot kinda falls into place imo.
I've also spent a lot of time thinking about how it would work and concluded it would just need basically re-written! I'd be interested to hear your ideas! I also wondered that about how much of Fennel's ideas were changed...
I think the greatest thing this show has given us were the advertisements "From the legendary composer behind Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, and The Phantom of the Opera. Comes something... BAD." I have the mailer ads that they sent out and I framed it and hung it on my wall because it made me laugh so much when I first saw it. I will probably go see it just for Jordan Dobson. I work at Hadestown and he came in for a bit to cover Orpheus when Reeve was out. he is such a sweetheart and was SOOOOO great in that role!!

Listening to both of you about this show having not seen it, it sounds like 2 very hung over people trying to describe how they both made it back to the hotel for a wedding after getting lost at the bachelor party. *This is FORKING Brilliant*
I'm still so pissed they erased the mid/plus sized aspect of Cinderella in the transfer. But no one wants to talk about it. Which is so frustrating as a plus sized actress to see. Also, I'm not a fan of the Broadway costume changes. They look very cheap and quickly made... and not thought through. Also.... I really wish they would've transferred Carrie. Bad review or not. I know she was flying back & forth at some point.
The pain of watching the development of this show from the sides. The concept was so hackneyed. Especially because there was a glut of rebel Cinderellas in the 00s. It wasn't just done it been overdone. The last thing theatre land needed was more half assed fairytales. The National Theatre does one every 3 years. *edit* ALW report is amazing 👏🏾

@@SuzER08there are versions of Cinderella all over the world like the first Cinderella story was apparently from Egypt, anyways even if a story doesn’t explicitly state they are a Cinderella story a lot of romances will have elements of Cinderella in it, just the premise of a poor or average girl meeting a guy who has the ability to change her life is simply a desirable romantic fantasy to many because who doesn’t want to have riches and luxuries from someone being in love with you. Like Cinderella IS the blueprint for poor girl rich guy stories
When I first heard about Bad Cinderella, I wanted to avoid it because it seemed like ALW was running out of ideas and originality. Really sick of the concept of "not like other girl"/"girlboss" Cinderellas. I love the Cinderella story, but it's a fairy tale a lot of people didn't understand. The more I hear about this musical, the more I wanna throw up. Thanks for making this video, however!
The writers of Cinderella retellings always feel so confident in the idea that they're doing something unique and special with the story by depicting their Cinderella character as assertive and quirky, only to neglect that most CInderella adaptations in the last few decades have done the same thing (I, personally, think it'd be a lot more distinct a vision if they committed harder to the prince plot twist at the end and just made the entire thing a gay love story. They could have easily written Cinderella as a lesbian and made her prince love interest a closeted princess who is terrified of the consequences of coming out as a monarch. It would also justify Cinderella’s rebellious attitude a lot more if she was bitter that she was surrounded by heteronormative bigots. )
@@RariettyC i kinda thought the amazon prince cinderella w camilla cabello was gonna have a plot twist like that, i was CONVINCED the prince was gay and in love w one of his friends lmao
When my wife and I first heard the London soundtrack, we decided it was the most Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical of all Andrew-Lloyd Webber musicals. His musical stamps are all over it. You could not mistake this soundtrack for any other composer's work. I have a morbid fascination with the show, thanks to the soundtrack and to MickeyJo's videos. Hearing your take was amazing. I hope it survives long enough for a pro shot to be made.
Wow, it’s gonna be really hard for Cinderella to get her necklace back after midnight, actually, it’s gonna be super easy barely an inconvenience. I died at the part.🤪
I would love for you to do a video about Panto. Like, I feel like there are a lot of theatre fans here in the US that do not understand British pantomime and what it really is as a style of theater. I just think that would be a really cool video to illustrate what it is and it’s difference from the theatre that we know here.
Seconding this, especially if you could get a guest who’s familiar with the history of panto! It’s so different from what we have here in the States, with its own distinct set of tropes (including audience participation to a degree we don’t really do in the US!) and sense of humor. If nothing else you’ll probably have a really fun time looking up clips!
We try to review shows positively and go into new shows blind so we form our own opinion. We saw it on Broadway and our positive review can be summed up to “stepmother and queens costumes were nice.” 😬🙄 The ALW resting face comment 💀💀
Regarding the anecdotes about Lloyd Webber looking & acting unhappy / grumpy, I think we need to consider his son was dying at the time, and cut the guy some slack. Webber almost certainly knew that was going to lose his son during this time, so I'm sure keeping any composure was a struggle. No amount of money's gonna buffer anyone from that pain.
ALW's Cinderella was the first show that I was very tempted to walk out on. I just really didn't like a lot of it and wish I left with the family who complained to theatre staff about the content not far away from me.
I saw Bad Cinderella last night and they announced it was closing on June 4th today. I did hear the ALW announcement at the beginning. It was an interesting show.
I have a feeling this is going to be one of those shows like Carrie the musical that gets a cult following and done by summer youth camps or a drag show.
When you say "tik-tok" ready, that makes me think of Finn McKenty's statement on the current state of metal/pop punk where artists aren't writing good songs, they're trying to write these catchy short sections that can be used to make viral tik-toks and either having a heap of lazy rubbish either side of these sections or they're trying to stitch together lots of these sections so the song doesn't work as a full composition...
Awesome. Id love to see even more collabs between you two. Its interesting to see the perspectives. Theater on Broadway and theater on the West End are different in some ways and its fun to see how each of you sees your respective areas.
I’m a musical theater neophyte so just getting to witness this conversation on what sounds like another baffling Sir Lloyd Webber production is fascinating! This is my first time watching Mickey Jo and he’s delightful! I subbed to his channel immediately! Thanks for this! 😂🤣
i think (bad) cinderella has the capacity to be a good show if they went back to the drawing board and went over the theme and the plot and also maybe if somebody who isn't alw had written it
I don't know why, but when I was listening to the cast recording for the first time I was basically hoping for it to be a Stepford Wives meets Cinderella type of story where Cinderella and the Prince discover that the town of Bellivle is hiding a Stepford Wives equse conspiracy, and they have to break it to save everyone. But no. Maybe it was because the day the cast album came out I had listened to the Your Wrong about pod on the book so it was still fresh on my mind. But still.
Near the end of December I got one of Mickey Jo's videos on the West End fiasco in my feed (the one where he reacts to ALW's "charming" letter on closing night), then went to his channel and realized it wasn't the only one lol. I had heard about the drama when it first happened and didn't realize just how bad the whole situation was, but after seeing people meme the infamous "spray painting announcement" a few months prior I just had to know what happened with the Broadway transfer coming up (I binged like 4 of his vids from the saga and just became more and more flabbergasted). Listening to you two now "comparing" the two versions is way funnier than it should be, it's fascinating to me how ALW has such a big ego that he can't realize HE'S the main reason why the show isn't great both on the West End and Broadway. At least the cast/crew seems to be giving it their all, fingers crossed they don't get the same treatment as the previous one
The one thing I can definitely say about Bad Cinderella is that it's an experience. It felt like watching a trainwreck and riding a roller-coaster at the same time, and somehow I can't remember half of it. I would 100% go watch the show if I was in the area, but I wouldn't travel just to see it.
If they wanted to do something viral and cool they should have had Cinderella deface the statue differently every week and they could people send in suggestions. If your suggestion is used you get free tickets to the show.
I was there on the first night preview too, just to see all the drama unfold. Fairytale marketing is not to be believed, I blame myself if I have been deceived. One thing that bothered me the most is you can see the sparkly tops of the cups of her ball dress under her outfit shirt from the very beginning as she dances. It’s not like we didn’t know we’d have a gown reveal in a show called Cinderella. Sure we’d suspect it was built into her outfit, but it could have been hidden way better. Every other major complaint about the book and the lyrics relating to it from the British version seems to still be there. I also didn’t realize Prince Charming’s very bizarre story song (from the cast album) wasn’t actually in the British version either. Here I was thinking it was cut.
I’m cracking up about you trying to think of a reason to see it. Go see Bad Cinderella so when in ten years, in a conversation about infamously weird or terrible shows, someone says “OMG, remember BAD CINDERELLA?” you can say “I SAW it, on Broadway!” Similar to how I tell people that my parents saw the original London production of Starlight Express on their honeymoon the year it opened. And listen, some of us did have to suffer through Love Never Dies when we had a national tour, because we got season tickets to our local performing arts house/tour stop in order to see Hamilton. 😂 I took my Phantom fangirl BFF. There were a couple good moments, at least. It wasn’t the worst thing I saw on tour that year! And yes, supporting the casts. Even from shows I end up actively disliking, there are always standout performers that I love to follow afterwards.
I think an interesting way to change the book is have Cinderella transformation BE permanent. I think then you have Cinderella trying to figure out who she is while also trying to not be caught as she was the girl who got embarrassed at the ball. I think them you have her learning to love herself, as who she is.
I’ve never seen Wolf Of Wall Street, though I’m obviously familiar with it. Finally gonna watch it now, JUST so I can write a fanfiction that is Wolf Of Wall Street but with Cinderella.
it's been a while since i've paid attention, but seems odd since i want to say oleksinski seemed to love the cast and score, with his main 3 bullet points being: cut 30 minutes of filler, punch up the comedy, and level up the sets and costumes.. . sooooo, somehow webber's takeaway was to berate/deflate the cast, write more songs, and simplify the sets and costumes? if oleksinski was the pivot point then webber wasn't reading the same review i did (or chose not to listen to a single critique).
yes! even the actual come uppance in the beginning, the townsfolk are out for blood but just end up tying her to a tree that she gets freed from anyway and then can go about her business like nothing really happened. the step family isnt publicly shamed for her antics, the step family seem to also not punish her extra for her antics so its like she has a day job of cleaning for them and serving them ...and then on her down time she commits gentle acts of vandalism and gets to clock back in. the status quo isnt up ended either. like the step mother alludes that she recalls the queen came from low standing but nothing comes from that and at the end the queen isn't unseated or challenged, even Sebastian agrees to do what she wants when he thinks he's lost everything. There seems to be like no stakes.

Thank you both for giving me a laugh.
Of course it doesn't make it to Broadway, because it doesn't exist.
and to that we say amen.
Love Never Dies - I wish it would ...
Thanks for the tip xD
This is such a good point thank you I never thought of that!
"Something Rotten? Throw it out!"
The cast is great and does the most, it's agreed. The material is the problem. Hope he gets recognised and has a wonderful career 🙏🏻
literally! I've seen so many people saying it's disrespectful to the performers to criticise the material even though I'd agree that the performers give it their all, wishing him all the best in his career!
Happy for him! It's an ALW show, will be good for his career, no matters what👍

Which... also says a lot about how they view America counterculture as an early 2000s Disney channel movie best friend.
also the "ball gown reveal" dress is giving elsa from frozen vibes, everything is very form fitting as well. its a choice

My theory on the broadway Cinderella costume is that there are so many normal people who THINK and CLAIM that they're alt or rebellious but really arnt and that this bad Cinderella is for them and not ACTUALL alt or rebellious folks
If only the show knew this, it might have something interesting to say
Alw has temper like mount vesuvius he is now to erupt explosively when things go wrong prior to opening.

I was in Joseph and its literally such a fun show!

For sure! It frusterates me how much potential is squandered in this book!
Fennel messed up the second season of Killing Eve pretty spectacularly - so much so that it never recovered
I've also spent a lot of time thinking about how it would work and concluded it would just need basically re-written! I'd be interested to hear your ideas! I also wondered that about how much of Fennel's ideas were changed...
So excited. I feel like Bad Cinderella is the theatre child of Diana and Morbius.

I think the greatest thing this show has given us were the advertisements
"From the legendary composer behind Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, and The Phantom of the Opera. Comes something... BAD."
I have the mailer ads that they sent out and I framed it and hung it on my wall because it made me laugh so much when I first saw it.
I will probably go see it just for Jordan Dobson. I work at Hadestown and he came in for a bit to cover Orpheus when Reeve was out. he is such a sweetheart and was SOOOOO great in that role!!
Sounds like an actual Broadway production equivalent of Riverdale

"I mean, I feel I would have noticed that?" Never change, MJT
"What is happening" definitely sums up a lot of what I've seen about this show.
Listening to both of you about this show having not seen it, it sounds like 2 very hung over people trying to describe how they both made it back to the hotel for a wedding after getting lost at the bachelor party. *This is FORKING Brilliant*
45 mins of two musical experts ripping a show apart.
This is my everything.
They’re experts?
I will never understand why people feel the need to make more versions of Cinderella. Like just off the top of my head- Ella Enchanted, A Cinderella Story (the one with Hilary duff), Another Cinderella Story (the one with Selena gomez), A Cinderella Story (the one with Lucy Hale), Cinderella (the one with lily james), the awful Amazon prime Cinderella, ENOUGH. No one wants more Cinderella. It was never even really a compelling story to begin with, why is it like the number 1 fairy tale people want to make and remake over and over??
Yeah I think the show has some interesting ideas but its "feminism" or whatever and is so godamn shallow
The writers of Cinderella retellings always feel so confident in the idea that they're doing something unique and special with the story by depicting their Cinderella character as assertive and quirky, only to neglect that most CInderella adaptations in the last few decades have done the same thing
(I, personally, think it'd be a lot more distinct a vision if they committed harder to the prince plot twist at the end and just made the entire thing a gay love story.

This is the greatest crossover event in the history of theatre criticism.
50 minute collab between my favourite theatre people today is a good day
This is one duo that I never dreamed of happening but so glad it did! What a perfect duo!
I really like this casual chat format because you can explore the little tangents that come up naturally. The glass butt thing cracked me up.
"Bad Phanterella: it WILL haunt you" I'd see the hell out of that
Bad Phantom exists - it’s called Love Never Dies.
I saw Bad Cinderella last night and they announced it was closing on June 4th today. I did hear the ALW announcement at the beginning. It was an interesting show.
After watching the Tiktok videos about this musical. I am very much sat for this video
I saw the show today (Sat. Feb 25) and the graffiti on the statue said "off with their heads" if you're curious
Thank you for reporting, I am planning to see it and am actually taking notes on what changes people are seeing!
Mickey Jo: unwilling oral historian of this show 😂 this is EVERYTHING to me!
I have a feeling this is going to be one of those shows like Carrie the musical that gets a cult following and done by summer youth camps or a drag show.
When you say "tik-tok" ready, that makes me think of Finn McKenty's statement on the current state of metal/pop punk where artists aren't writing good songs, they're trying to write these catchy short sections that can be used to make viral tik-toks and either having a heap of lazy rubbish either side of these sections or they're trying to stitch together lots of these sections so the song doesn't work as a full composition...
this was an INSTANT click for me and it's made even better for having MickeyJo in it!
i would listen to a theatre podcast with you both! really fun listening to you talk about this stuff
they were definitely trying to appeal to gen z/tiktok by changing cinderella’s costume to have a y2k urban outfitters vibe...
Her Broadway costume looks like an outfit for a revival of RENT. Idk why but that’s what it looks like to me lol
Love the casual conversation vibe of this! Scripted videos are awesome but this style really suits what you’re talking about
i think (bad) cinderella has the capacity to be a good show if they went back to the drawing board and went over the theme and the plot and also maybe if somebody who isn't alw had written it
I don't know why, but when I was listening to the cast recording for the first time I was basically hoping for it to be a Stepford Wives meets Cinderella type of story where Cinderella and the Prince discover that the town of Bellivle is hiding a Stepford Wives equse conspiracy, and they have to break it to save everyone. But no. Maybe it was because the day the cast album came out I had listened to the Your Wrong about pod on the book so it was still fresh on my mind. But still.
That would be so much more interesting!
Testicle dress, or as I like to call it, ball gown
I thought this was gonna be a scripted documentary but I honestly dig the podcast off-the-cuff style too.
I am going on a trip with my theater students to New York and am going to see this show in 36 hours. I am terrified and excited all at once.
Largely tangential to the main discussion here, but the phrase “deceptively sexualized trains” always knocks me out 😂

I’m cracking up about you trying to think of a reason to see it. Go see Bad Cinderella so when in ten years, in a conversation about infamously weird or terrible shows, someone says “OMG, remember BAD CINDERELLA?” you can say “I SAW it, on Broadway!”
Similar to how I tell people that my parents saw the original London production of Starlight Express on their honeymoon the year it opened.
*MickeyJo after WitW sent him the DM:* Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in.

OH MY... I just got that too!! ☠️☠️☠️☠️
it's been a while since i've paid attention, but seems odd since i want to say oleksinski seemed to love the cast and score, with his main 3 bullet points being: cut 30 minutes of filler, punch up the comedy, and level up the sets and costumes.. . sooooo, somehow webber's takeaway was to berate/deflate the cast, write more songs, and simplify the sets and costumes? if oleksinski was the pivot point then webber wasn't reading the same review i did (or chose not to listen to a single critique).
“Resting Lloyd Webber Face” is amazing. 😂 It should be slang among us.

What I love is the No stakes of the plot. They fake out the wedding and in the end it doesn’t matter
yes! even the actual come uppance in the beginning, the townsfolk are out for blood but just end up tying her to a tree that she gets freed from anyway and then can go about her business like nothing really happened. the step family isnt publicly shamed for her antics, the step family seem to also not punish her extra for her antics so its like she has a day job of cleaning for them and serving them ...and then on her down time she commits gentle acts of vandalism and gets to clock back in. the status quo isnt up ended either. like the step mother alludes that she recalls the queen came from low standing but nothing comes from that and at the end the queen isn't unseated or challenged, even Sebastian agrees to do what she wants when he thinks he's lost everything. There seems to be like no stakes.
